A highly entertaining RPG that no PSP-owning fan of the genre should pass up. Your socks won't be blown off, but your role-playing desires will be satiated. Isn't that more important?
  2. If you are looking for a Final Fantasy style RPG then you will be disappointed... It more than satisfied my craving for a good game with a great story.

Underneath the rote plot elements is a thoughtful tale packed with great characterization and surprising good humor. [Jan 2006, p.129]

It's familiar, well-crafted, and fits well on PSP. [Jan 2006, p.76]
  5. The real fact of the matter with this game is that it does achieve its main focus. Which is to waste time. The formula of whacking monsters to make my numbers go up and make my characters the uberist is there.

I can't see the point in playing a boring retro-wannabe when there are plenty of good games that are actually retro and don't use "old-school" as an excuse for lack of originality. [Jan 2006, p.156]
  7. A Tear of Vermillion does have a rich world to explore and an interesting cast. But with out an original story to tie the entire gametogether or great gameplay Legend of Heroes isn’t legendary at all. [JPN Import]

Great game. The end is amazing! 10

The first in the Gagharv Trilogy, The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion takes place in the fictional land El Phildin, fifty-six years before "Moonlight Witch".
The story begins with an insight to the past. Avin and Eimelle are orphaned children living in Cathedral. Avin was 8 while Eimelle was 7. Cathedral is under attack and brothers during the escape parted.
8 years pass. And now the hero begins a journey in search of her missing sister.

It's a great game with great characters, and great dialogues. With a big, exciting finale.

I love the character pictures that come up with the dialogue, and the transparency of the dialogue boxes. It is incredibly easy on the eyes, and has an interesting plot, even though it is not entirely original. It moves a little slow, especially if you want to start a new game. Perhaps some way to bypass that could have been added. The minor errors in the english language are a tad bit annoying, but as it is from Japan, and Japanese is rather difficult to translate, it can be forgiven. The plot is predictable really, and some of the dialogue is pointless and reads as if the author of the game forced it, which is never good. The books that the characters can "read" are a little stupid, and don't sound like novels at all. (Swordswoman Sapphy or whatever that "book" was called. If you play it you will find out, and if you have played it, you most likely know what it is, if you are one of those gamers that looks at EVERYTHING that a world has to offer.) All in all, it's a throughly addicting game that will make even a non-RPG gamer play it again and again. And maybe several more times after that. Expand

The Graphics are nice, big and bright, although they probably could have used some more actions. The sound is pretty good seeing as it is a psp game and portables have been known for thier brutal sound. Finally, the story is cliche, but enjoyable, I definatly recommend the game to those who love nostalgia and a sense of the good ol' days of RPG's. Expand
