The original Super Mario Bros. is a game that has been there for me since childhood. It's always been a nostalgic security blanket, the video game equivalent of comfort food. It's nice and familiar, but not especially challenging or exciting. Super Mario Bros. 35 took this classic and truly gave it new life. I feel excited, tense and downright giddy about this game for the first time since I was a child.
For the first time since forever, I feel like playing Super Mario Bros. again. The team at Arika added 34 other players, increased the number of mobs accordingly, made the player character a bit more powerful – and thus managed to turn rusty gameplay into gold. [12/2020, p.39]

Super Mario 35 is an absolute pleasure, taking the usual Nintendo nostalgia and offering a different way to experience it. I couldn't have pictured anything like a classic Mario game working in a competitive battle royale environment, but Nintendo has made it happen and it's loads of fun.
Combining battle royale with classic Mario gameplay, Super Mario Bros. 35 is an interesting and fresh idea that could use some more depth.
Super Mario Bros. 35 is extremely addictive to keep playing over and over, trying to get that top spot no matter how long it takes. Matches can last a good amount of time with the final remaining group of players, so it becomes a strategy match of trying to send threatening enemies to everyone else, hoping they slip up. There are so many creative concepts here and it’s nice to see such wild ideas for the battle royale genre popping up this year that make things silly in the best kind of way. It’s a crying shame this title won’t be around forever, but as a free title for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, it’s a fantastically fun time all the same. Anyone looking for a crazy new challenging way to play the original Super Mario Bros should give Super Mario Bros. 35 a try and jump into the fray.
Hopefully Nintendo has a change of heart like they did with Jump Rope Challenge and updates the game to address some of its shortcomings: because it has even more potential than a temporary flight of fancy.
Despite everything Super Mario Bros. 35 offers and the fun it provides, it's the lack of security in the investment of time that players make that overshadows the experience. While it's fun on its own, a big part of its appeal is situated in how much fun it is to unlock options and sink more time into it, which will amount to nothing in March - and in that light, this game is difficult to recommend outside of a few brief sessions.
Un juego realmente divertido que mezcla la formula del genial Super Mario con la del Tetris 99 convirtiendolo en uno de los mejores Battle Royale del momento. El unico punto negativo es que va a estar por tiempo limitado, ojala Nintendo de marcha atras con esa decision.

This is one of the greatest battle royals that I have ever played. Sure, it got repetitive, but it was still fun to pick up and play every once in a while. I am really sad that Nintendo shut it down.

Way to ruin one of the best games of all time, Nintendo. Further proof that the internet is truly the scourge of humanity, if you needed further proof. Get ready to encounter people from around the globe who are prepared to **** all the enjoyment out of a cherished childhood memory. Be prepared to suddenly become aware of all the imperfect levels of this game as you play through them over and over. I have a better than 10% winning percentage over 250+ games before you assume that this review is just sour **** and inexperience btw. Also worth mentioning that there is literally nothing close to the original Nintendo controller for switch so also be prepared for many frustrating deaths due to poor response from your controller. Just don't.

Continuing Nintendo’s ongoing celebration of Mario’s 35th Anniversary, this week saw the release of a brand new spin on the original Mario Bros for the NES. Pitting you against 34 other players in Super Mario Bros 35, booting up the game for the first time you will see its interface has some major similarities to Tetris 99 and that shouldn’t surprise you as they are both handled by the same developer, Arika.
Now, here is the part where I must make a shocking confession, I have never been a fan of Mario sidescrollers. I was introduced to Mario on the 64, before that I had a Mega Drive and even there I wasn’t the biggest fan of Sonic, I have always preferred my platformers to have more 3D in them which probably explains why even now I haven’t touched on the New Mario Bros and Mario Maker titles often.
Mario 35 plays a lot in the same way Tetris 99 does in that all 35 players are playing on the same course and what happens on one person’s playthrough can affect others, usually with more Goombas added to the level. You also have a clock that only gives you 30 or so seconds at the beginning to finish the level and you gain a few seconds every time you stomp on an enemy.
Now while I have never been fond of 2D Mario, I have certainly played them including the original but I was never that good at it. So imagine playing a Mario game but with only one life and people constantly poking you, that is basically Super Mario 35 in a nutshell. I managed to make it to a water level and the entire level was flooded with Goombas.
While Tetris 99 kept me entertained for well over a year, I don’t see that happening with Super Mario 35. Even if the game wasn’t just for a limited time only, what made Tetris 99 was that every playthrough was different, Mario 35 starts off the exact same way every time, Level 1-1 and that can get super repetitive after a while. You can mix things up by starting off with a Mushroom, Fire Flower or even a Star, they do cost coins but you earn so many you don’t even notice.
Mario 35 was an attempt to replicate the success of Tetris 99 but as legendary and timeless as the original Mario is, it isn’t exactly simple enough for this battle royale-style multiplayer. Tetris 99 is something you can pick up and play for a few minutes or even a few hours and not get bored, you can only play Level 1-1 so many times before you’re just wading in a pile of Goombas, and I’m not going through **** after last time.
