Put simply, Super Mario 3D World is stunning. Its world is beautiful, its design is impeccable, and its fun is infectious. I'm running out of superlatives here, so let me finish where I started: Go play it.

It really is a fantastic game. That thrill of hitting the top of the flagpole is still there after all these years, Mario and co leap about at the top of their game, it's colourful, friendly, joyful, and the most fun I've had with a platform game since Super Mario Galaxy 2.

While not as revolutionary as Mario 64 or Galaxy, 3D World manages to feel simultaneously fresh and nostalgic in a way the New Super Mario Bros. series never quite realized.

It's not a game that'll single-handedly save the Wii U, but it is a typically brilliant, typically Nintendo experience - and one that'll live in the memory long after the final flag pole has disappeared from view. [Jan 2014, p.45]

Traditional Mario, who perfects all the possible aspects of the plumbing trade. Indeed, this is not a revolution, but you will be frequently surprised, and you will never be bored in his company.

While I’d still like to see a proper 3D Mario game on Wii U, 3D World does so much right that it’s hard to bash the formula, especially when it veers off course so often.

If you’ve sampled a wider range of platformers, and if you don’t have an inherent predilection for Mario worlds, Super Mario 3D World will proceed like a pleasant enough curiosity. It’s a bit like hearing oldies on a radio station. It’s familiar and safe. Then it’s over and out of your head entirely, leaving you room to discover new and better music.

It has improved co-op, graphics that felt like the most polished Nintendo game ever made, the interesting level design, and the way the characters have different abilities made this probably the best of the gen. Sure the camera can feel stretched out in multiplayer and not really an epic presentation, but at least it's another home run from Nintendo.

It's honestly unbelievable how many ways there are for a person to have fun just by jumping around in a game. Looking at the franchise's history, this probably is the most varied series ever but that has stayed true to the principles of its conception: Pure fun with family and friends.

In conclusion, one of the best Mario titles ever and proof that Nintendo can leave you speechless due to how original they are, even after 30+ years of creating a game with the same formula. Because of all that and the sheer quality of the game (from the colors, the shapes, the lighting, the gameplay etc.), for me, this is one of the greatest achievements in the field of game-designing ever.

That feeling of adopting a pet might be the closest thing that resembles the feeling. At first, it just seems too different. But then it slowly grows on you and all the sudden you are licked in the eye by a wet tongue. And for once it’s not Luigi waking you in your sleep!

Everything in this game is just fun. The adventure is long. There are many surprises and challenges and things to find. Playing with a friend or friends is amazing as well. The co-op aspect is the best part and almost silly to think how few games have this anymore. Just when you think the game is over, it keeps going and going!

Some things that would be nice to see in a follow up would be a larger selection of characters. Imagine if you had the roster from ‘Smash Brothers to play with in this game! Or leaderboards for each level and some sort of weekly scavenger hunt. Another thing that would be nice would be voice-overs for the cut scenes and online play. And lastly, the stars you collect should be gold not green.

Surprises don’t seem to come along very much these days for games but this is one nice surprise. Bravo Nintendo for showing the modern gaming world what’s at the heart of why many of us first started playing games; the fun and adventure of exploring.
