A very deep and fun new hack´n slash IP made by the same guys who delivered us Bayonetta.

It might not be the prettiest game, but once you get the idea of utilizing the weapon changing gestures, the Centinels will keep you in a firm grip with their positively hectic battles and challenging boss encounters.

I wanted to like this game more. It’s charming, technically competent but ultimately I could not get past it’s shortcomings to consider it much more than an average game.

The Wonderful 101 is yet another hit by Hideki Kamiya and Platinum Games that's set to become a cult classic in the years to come and absolutely shouldn't be missed by anyone longing for something fresh and original. Simply wonderful.

The Wonderful 101 is one of those rare games that keeps getting more and more fun the more that you play it. If you have the dexterity to handle the controls and the patience to deal with a few momentum-killing platforming/puzzle bits, you're in for a heck of a time.

Part Bayonetta, part Viewtiful Joe, The Wonderful 101 is a game with a phenomenal, hilarious presentation and plenty of great ideas that is frequently hamstrung by its reliance on some unfortunate design choices.

The Wonderful 101 is a great fit for the Wii U, being rich in color and charm and putting the system's unique features to good use. Combat is strategic and rewarding, and some of the mechanics on show are refreshingly innovative.

The Wonderful 101 draws on ideas from Kamiya’s previous games – Viewtiful Joe’s cartoonish charm, Okami’s brushstroke mechanic, Bayonetta’s setpieces – but in concert they’re messy, hamstrung by cluttered visual design and a clumsy central mechanic. Stretched over a large frame, they wear thin quickly. There’s a good game in here, but it’s smothered by the need to conform to its host platform’s feature set, and a distorted concept of value for money.

A horrendous learning curve, poor story flow, and shoddy controls take away from what could have been a superstar new IP for Nintendo. Instead, only the players who can look past the bugs and pacing problems will be satisfied in the end.

This is a love letter to childhood innocence, to that age where truth and justice and awesome costumes seem almost real, as well as the coolest things in the world. In that light, picking at it seems churlish, because The Wonderful 101 doesn't make you feel like a hero; it makes you feel like hundreds.

The camera does its part in making some sequences a tad bit annoying, but that's just a small irritation in a game where everything else is so absolutely spot on. The whole game world feels like a gigantic box of toys come to life, bustling with charm and lovable characters.

It can be confusing at first, but The Wonderful 101 has lots of potential to unleash. A great GamePad support, even if there's something more to do with this new controller, and graphics make it the best third-party exclusive for Wii U so far.

It is in the design and concept of 100 superheroes that we find the starting point for a different experience that improves from GamePad with highly exclusive mechanics. Regardless of having been developed thinking on the touch screen or not, the experience remains focused on action sequences and great technical skill.

The Wonderful 101 experiments with inventive concepts and has plenty of charm. No matter how noble its intentions, it is brought down by the same thing that has ruined so many other superhero teams. The individual aspects are interesting alone, but they just have trouble working together.

The Wonderful 101 shows that Platinum's mischievous streak and fondness for over-the-top action remains undiminished. It's an enjoyably bonkers title that makes good use of the Wii U's touchscreen and as such, is a bright spot in that console's slowly-expanding library.

Don’t be misled by the childish appearance of The Wonderful 101. This game fits perfectly in the series of (adult) games made by Platinum Games: extremely challenging, purely build on gameplay and unique. The game might not be as perfect as the other games that spawn from the Japanese studio, but The Wonderful 101 manages to pull it off thanks to its unique personality and gameplay.

The Wonderful 101 is a good game, marred by insisting on repeating both enemies, inside jokes and half-baked variations. The combat system works excellent, and is enough to make sure the game thrives.
  23. 70
When the Wonderful 101 manages to restrain its own chaos and make room for its myriad of ideas, it’s a joyous experience. Unfortunately it trips itself and stumbles over obvious issues that should have been handled more elegantly. A nice superhero adventure that could have been much better.

The beautiful and highly original The Wonderful 101 is severely handicapped by questionable control choices. Which is very unfortunate, because this could have been an instant classic. Everything else is just pure gold.

A truly hardcore, and original arcade fighting game that forgives not a slightest mistake, and it doesn't even bother with any tutorial. Still, the game's incredibly entertaining, and it will amaze you by a number of the game weapons' tactics and combinations, and its interesting control system. A pity the game's camera view doesn't work the way you would like to, but you'll manage.

The Wonderful 101 is a good game … at times. Once I got the hang of its combo system, the battles were nearly always exciting and challenging, but Platinum’s Wii U debut has too much filler and a busted camera.

With Nintendo's Pikmin 3 having just demonstrated such mastery of both game design and the Wii U hardware, it’s disappointing to see such a superficially similar yet confused and messy game following it mere weeks later.

The Wonderful 101 is difficult to master, but the fact that it’s difficult to learn is what will hamper the progress of many would-be adventurers looking to join the battle against the GEATHJERK.

It’s not always user-friendly, but it is incredibly unique and often very funny, which makes its difficulty all the more incongruous. The biggest problem is that it just doesn’t feel tight enough, and the input system is far too haphazard for precision. And yet, it’s hugely likeable and playable throughout.
  37. Aug 19, 2013

The game's tall difficulty belies its accessible aesthetic: make no mistake, this is a far more demanding proposition than its Pikmin cousin. And yet, these are the hallmarks that make Platinum's output some of the most exciting work in contemporary video games: scruffy invention in a playpen that allows for player mastery. In the midst of this riot of ideas and unrefined energy we can perceive some of the Wii U system's idiosyncratic wonder.

Deep, rewarding, frantic and truly unique: The Wonderful 101 is nothing but an instant classic, something so pure and fun that represents the joy of playing videogames. You gotta be thankful to Platinum Games and Nintendo for this one, Kamiya surely did it again!

A sparkling game full of cute character, funny situations and spectacular boss battles. It’s a shame the bad recognition of symbols sometimes get in the way of the chaotic and fast gameplay. And the game sometimes gets frustrating when new enemies kill you before you even get a chance to find out their weaknesses. But despite it all, Platinum Games delivers a solid title that is interesting and beautiful in many ways.

    65
The Wonderful 101 isn't a good surprise. Doomed buy very repetitive gameplay, the good ideas the game carries are drown into the mass, and can't make you forget about the faults. It's quite sad because Platinum Games's title is one of the few to take the risk of actually using the console's gamepad in another way than displaying a loadout or a map (at least sometimes). The design is quite close to Viewtiful Joe and is one of the strong points of the games, but here too, the limited power of Nintendo's console and the light work done to graphics from the Japanese studio are seriously holding back the potential of the artistic lead. In brief, we're far away from a System-seller game.

Whatever issues might plague Wonderful 101 are glossed over with charm and an idiosyncratic vision. Sorting through dozens of heroes, picking out your leader and imbuing him or her with a personality feels like dumping your toy box on the floor and gathering up the ones you want to play with.
  45. Sep 3, 2013

Despite being the prettiest game on the Wii U that has plenty of charm, poor gameplay design and frequently unnecessary spikes in difficulty make this a game that will only appeal to the most die hard of Platinum fans. Not so wonderful, after all.
  46. 80
Full of ideas, humor and difficulty, The Wonderful 101 will keep you glued to the screen, which can be both good & bad. But a little bit of challenge from a difficult game never killed anyone, right? [Issue#234]
  47. Dec 12, 2013
    60
The Wonderful 101 bursts with charm, humour and style. It is very easy to care for the characters and their universe. But frequent trouble with the controls breaks the tempo far too often. Something that also racks up the challenge unnecessarily high in an already hard game. But at the same time the battle system is a joy, if hard to master. It’s a very good game with some rough edges that feels very well needed on the Nintendo Wii U.

The Wonderful 101 is an absolutely spectacular and memorable game that manages to represent the authentic spirit of arcade games, the original spark that gives life to great video games. This is not an easy game, nor does it facilitate the player's experience, but it reflects so much authenticity, life and pride for the trade that all minor imperfections are more or less forgiven.

The Wonderful 101 is a clever, solid action game, but it has its flaws. Platinum Games delivers a fresh experience that revitalize the genre but on-screen disorder and a forgettable use of the WiiU Gamepad holds it from being even better.

The controls may be cumbersome, and the pacing may be faulty, but it's a romp worth sticking with. With its superpowered premise, memorable characters, and fascinating gameplay gimmick, The Wonderful 101 is a theatrical blockbuster that's perfect for Wii U.

The Wonderful 101, in all likelihood, is going to become a cult classic. It's not perfect, it's not immediate and, above all, it's not the game that will turn Nintendo Wii U into a successful console. But at the same time, it's a game with many great ideas and way more than 101 wonderful moments.

True, it’s flawed, occasionally messy, and could do with being a little more accommodating to beginners. It also happens to be one of the boldest and most original visions on any system this year, and surely cements Hideki Kamiya’s place among the great game creators of his generation.

The Wonderful 101 is an incredibly enjoyable game, despite the initially daunting control system. The nonsensical story, funny characters and intense action all come together to create an excellent romp. While the controls do hiccup on occasion and some later sections do drag on a little it still remains a uniquely enjoyable action title, and one of the strongest exclusives currently available for the Wii U.

So much of it is so immensely charming, loveable and inventive that it’s hard to stay mad for too long. You just always feel hamstrung in your ability to extract the full potential out of a conceivably phenomenal game. Wonderful 101 is a breath of fresh air for gamers everywhere. It's a fun new concept wrapped up in a beautiful high quality presentation.

At its core, it's a beat 'em up adventure game. It boils down to learning enemy weaknesses and scoring high hitting combo attacks. You control a group of superheroes who must defend Earth from an outer-space invasion. The controls are innovative and take a little while to learn, and making that effort is rewarded. The controls are tight and become intuitive after investing a little time to learn and practice them. The Wonderful 101 also utilizes many features of Wii U's unique gamepad controller. The music and sound in Wonderful 101 are top notch. It has an over the top attitude and feels like a high quality animation is playing out before you because of the great sound and graphics. Everything about this game is polished and shines quality.

All in all, this game breaks new ground and deserves a perfect score for taking gamers somewhere unexpected and WONDERFUL!!!

The last fatigue of Platinum Games is an awesome game, a masterpiece. Level design is excellent, it offers a lot of secrets ways for secret and optional trials/mission, it's so challenging explore the entire level with "head".
Character design is beautiful, i mean, there are a lot of quotes of anime, manga, japan culture and even auto-quotes of Platinum Games itself...all the characters are funny and charismatic...and...wow, we've got 100 unique heroes, each one of them have got his personal page with weapons, descriptions, name, ecc.
This game is so reach of content, it's really wonderful. But now, let's talk about one of the most important thing of the game: the battle system. Is truly genial, it's the summa of precedent PG (or Clover Studios) games, like Okami, Bayonetta, Viewtiful Joe, but also add new features, like the morfo unions, that are absolutely genius. It's fust, technical, deep and offers a lot of opportunities.
The game itself offer during the main story an incredible amount of different situations, it's a surprise after a surprise, from the beginning, to the end...and there is epicness at amazing level.
This W101 is my favourite Wii U game, it's awesome and a like to prize originality. The has got some defects, but all of theme are destroyed by the quality of the product, in its entirely.
This is probably my favourite Platinum Games game ever and one of my favourite game of all time...it fits perfectly on Wii U and its line up.
