If you want to feel pure terror without having to visit a haunted house, then ZombiU is a game for you.

ZombiU has more than enough value as a solo experience to strongly recommend. It's a hell of an achievement for a launch title from a third-party team getting to grips with strange new hardware – who'd have thought that not Nintendo but Ubisoft would have created the defining Wii U experience?

You'd think after all the years of playing survival horror games I'd be ready for just about anything, it's good to have my survival skills thrown in to question every now and again, and thanks to ZombiU it'll keep me sharp for when the real thing goes down. It's too bad some design choices keep this game from being a truly stellar launch title.

ZombiU becomes a showcase for the new Nintendo console with it's clever use of its unique controller scheme. It's an excellent survival horror game that keeps you on your toes from start to finish. It's tough and scary, and well worth the effort to play through.

If you buy a WiiU, you'll simply need to get a copy of ZombiU. It's a true survival-horror game, channelling the heart-in-mouth claustrophobia of early Resident Evils and Alone In The Dark, and adding Dark Souls' refusal to compromise as the icing on top. Play it in a darkened room, and you'll remember what gaming is all about.

It is unforgiving and brutal, but in the best of ways that challenges players to carefully consider each step. For those who don't shy away from a challenge, ZombiU may just be the best reason to own a Wii U at launch.

Despite an uninspired melee system and a plateauing story ZombiU does a solid job in bringing an old genre to a new console. This is survival horror how it's meant to be.

ZombiU isn't perfect, but it sets out to do a very specific thing and succeeds with style. It's atmospheric and horrifying and will provide plenty of sweaty palms and jump scares, proving that dark, mature games can thrive on Nintendo's newest console. Anyone looking for a challenging and highly immersive experience with some real heft behind it is definitely going to come away pleased, despite some relatively minor niggles relating to that ground-breaking GamePad.

A fascinating survival-horror game. Despite some surprising shortcomings, in particular a perfectible playability and combat system, ZombiU puts the player at the center of a zombicalypse like no other game. The extremely well polished atmosphere, high difficulty and asymmetrical gameplay ideas deliver an intense experience that all fans of horror and survival themed games should live.

A game that rewards the smart, patient survivalist who is able to overcome the many menacing challenges of a dark setting filled with treacherous zombies. Moments of adversity are frequent and the Wii U's GamePad is able to heighten the experience with interactions that leave you in distress.

The 30 minutes I spent in a nursery are some of the most memorable time I've spent with a horror game or movie, punctuated by a jump scare that literally took my breath away. Survival horror fans disenchanted with the direction Capcom's taken the Resident Evil series will find much to love in ZombiU, and anybody looking for a quality launch title with deep, rewarding mechanics are encouraged to see what Ubisoft--yes, Ubisoft-has created.

Zombiu is a strong launch title, even if the focus and the alignment on a Nintendo console seems a bit forced. However, a shallow combat system and some disappointing graphics keep the game from being much better that what it actually is.

It's difficult. It's dark. It deftly juggles genre conventions to do the unexpected. And it's exactly the kind of title that gamers have come to expect from new console launches, the kind of game that makes new console launches exciting.

ZombiU is awkward, ugly, crawling in its pace, and often nonsensical with its narrative ... and I remember when horror games weren't ashamed of any of that, even actively exploiting it to create alienating, frightening atmospheres that stuck in a players' memories and made them too spooked to want to take another step forward. ZombiU did that to me.

Zombi U completes its mission: be funny and suggest interesting ideas to take advantage of the Wii hardware. An intense and innovative survival experience that Wii U users will remember as one of the most enjoyable launch games for their new console.

While unlikely to be the game that sells millions of gamers on the Wii U as a system, ZombiU is a strong game and its purchase a no-brainer for those who own the console already.

This isn't a zombie shooting gallery, nor is it an episode of the Walking Dead. Zombies may be cliche and played out, but ZombiU's strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. Definitely check it out if you own a Wii U.

A good survival horror game, with some technical issues and a poor storytelling.

The atmosphere, intelligent use of audio, cerebral melee combat, perma-death, and an honest to goodness ability to scare the hell out of you and make you sit on the edge of your couch, white-knuckled in hopes of making it through just one more room alive is absolutely wonderful. A game that can elicit that kind of emotional response is an undoubted success on some level.

While far from perfect, ZombiU is nevertheless an compelling launch title that no owner of the Wii U shouldn't at least rent.
  21. 72
A game that successfully utilizes the Wii U's GamePad features, provides a spooky atmosphere, and has some innovative elements that make it a worthy purchase for many. Unfortunately, the combat is not as refined as it could be and I found the gameplay somewhat tedious.

The game-ending glitches can be a real pain and the same goes for some of the developers choices concerning the use of the GamePad. But if you are willing to look past those problems you'll be left with a true and immersive survival horror experience.

ZombiU is too packed full of controls and gameplay ideas to make a cohesive whole, but it's still a welcome addition to the genre. [Jan 2013, p.58]

ZombiU is hardly everything it could have been. But it has to be commended for not reducing its gameplay to a handful of technical gimmicks. Its ideas are brave and while they tend to alternately make you love and hate the game, in the end they still make ZombiU a tense and worthwhile affair.

In this Ubisoft launch title for the Wii U, some very good ideas are sadly spoiled by poor action and an average technical execution. ZombiU is still worth a try though, if you really are into the Survival Horror genre.

Some games gather the players together. Some divide them. Obviously, ZombiU belongs to second category. On the one hand, Ubisoft did very well to use the Wii U Gamepad and asymmetric gameplay brings something new to the multiplayer experience. But, on the other hand, ZombiU isn't visually impressive and some players won't appreciate the difficulty level that sometimes has been pushed too high.

If just a few nagging flaws would have been corrected, ZombiU could have been a revelation for the floundering genre. Still, with top-notch graphics, a huge world and great exploration elements in play, it remains a must-buy for the console for those with the patience to see it through.
  28. Nov 20, 2012

A survival horror game that delivers tense exploration with more than a few drawbacks, ZombiU succeeds in making the Wii U's gamepad feel like an essential part of the experience and proving well-designed mature games can flourish regardless of what console it's played on.

A pure, authentic Survival Horror, which is something to celebrate nowadays. It has some flaws and some uses of the Wii U Gamepad doesn't work well, but the core ideas are solid, there are tons of interesting details and great touches that create a really solid experience.

A smart and engaging exploration of what Nintendo's strange new machine can muster. Historically, thirdparty releases on a console launch day have been chequered and timid affairs made by inexperienced teams fearful of losing their footing on unknown terrain. When Ubisoft Montpellier's ZombiU works in smart union with its host console, however, it frequently delights.

GameSpot gave this awesome a 45/100, but then they deleted the review. Yep. Anyway, ZombiU it's an awesome game not only because it's better than the new entries in the series that used to be the bomb in the Horror genre a decade ago ( Resident Evil and Silent Hill), but also because it's challenging, rewarding and it uses the GamePad in a great way. Get this. It's gold. Full Review »
