This was a VERY challenging game when it first released on the NES, and it is no easier on the Wii Virtual Console. There is no hand-holding as you will find in most modern platformers the player is thrown right into the mix with no real direction or explanation of how to do much of anything. I was completely lost, and even with the benefit of online FAQs and walk-throughs, I found this title to be frustrating and boring. It has some great innovations which would be fully realized in later titles like Kirby's Dream Land, but which are poorly executed here. This is all to say nothing of the sub-par visuals and initially catchy but ultimately grating soundtrack. Fans of the 2009 re-imagined title of the same name on Wii would be best served leaving this one alone. Full Review »

I remembered trying to play this game as a kid and getting frustrated with it before giving up fairly quickly, so I was eager to give it another try as an adult. Different life stage, same result. This is a very difficult game with no guidance or learning curve at all; it's basically trial-and-error from start to finish, or following an online walkthrough which defeats the purpose of playing the game. In A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia, you play a boy who has befriended an amorphous white alien, a.k.a. the Blob, which can transform into various objects when fed certain flavors of jelly beans. Good luck figuring out which beans to use in which situations. You'll run into one GAME OVER after another before you start memorizing exactly what you have to do to advance. This game had so much promise, but the end result is far too linear and absurdly difficult to enjoy. Perhaps the modern remake turned out better. (I haven't played it.) Full Review »
