Contra ReBirth is no doubt one of the best, if not the best, titles to hit WiiWare this year.
  2. Contra Rebirth doesn’t represent a revolution in the actual gaming scene. Just because it doesn’t care at all. Contra is here, with its destruction, challenging gameplay and devastating fun: perfect for those who can appreciate it, the others could as well seek for something else, but not without knowing that they’re throwing away an option to see how much fun a good game can deliver.
  3. If you love Contra games, chances are you already know that Contra ReBirth is worth the 1000 points. But if you’ve never played a Contra title, and want to see what the fuss is all about, Contra ReBirth is an outstanding example of why so many gamers consider Konami the masters of runnin’ and gunnin’.

Any retro gamer will want to download this one. Like last year's Mega Man 9, this is both an homage to classic gaming and a respectable new entry in a long-running series that can stand on its own.
  5. Despite some shortcomings, Contra Rebirth is a fantastic download for Wii owners and at just $10, it provides a lot of fun at little cost.
  6. The only real problem with ReBirth is that the quantity of content doesn’t quite justify the $10 price tag. Other than that, it’s another fantastic download from Konami and perhaps one of the best Contra titles yet.
  7. Gradius ReBirth was a bit too short and easy compared to previous Gradius games (especially because previous games in the series already were pretty short), but with Contra ReBirth, Konami has struck the balance just right: there's only five levels, but they're all decently sized and quite challening to get through.
  8. The run-and-gun shooting holds up extremely well to this day, and the level design is almost pitch perfect. However, it's an incredibly short romp, offering only a smidge of the variety that's locked up in the annals of the series. The lack of online co-op is a real bummer, too.
  9. A brand new game lovingly crafted in a retro style. [Nov 2009, p.101]
  10. You can tell Konami has learned and knows how to pick up the elements which are really classic, restructure and focus them in a downloadable game, with classic style and direct action.
  11. Not just a simple remake of the classic, Contra Rebirth is a genuine, all-new injection of classic arcade action. More committed to the hardcore and nostalgic audience, it's nonetheless a great and classy production by Konami.
  12. While it doesn't quite measure up to Contra III or Contra 4, Contra ReBirth scratches that side-scrolling itch a lot of us old-timers have.
  13. Though Contra ReBirth may not enjoy the same level of variety as other recent installments in the series, it's ultimately well worth the asking price.
  14. If Contra 4 was too frustrating for you, this could end up being your favorite Contra game of this decade. Fans of the series and the run-and-gun genre should pick this up without hesitation. Contra ReBirth is both a nice tribute for fans and the perfect place to start for those Contra virgins who've ever wondered what the series is all about.
  15. Contra Rebirth is a hard and short run & gun -shoot 'em up. It's pure neo-retro: It's done the way they used to be done and that's not necessarily a good thing. [Dec 2009]
  16. An unforgettable few hours for gamers of a certain generation. [Oct 2009, p.122]

Still, like I mentioned, the game is not that long. Nor is it nearly as deep as the Contras it attempts to emulate.
  18. Konami forgets it's already made the ultimate Contra tribute - and it's not this bland rehash.
  19. Contra ReBirth is an insultingly basic installment to a popular action series.
  20. A competent Contra game, but if you look at the 'ReBirth' in the title expecting to find updated visuals and new features as the name suggests, you are better off looking elsewhere.

This game is short. Really, really, really short, with only 6 levels or so. I never played Contra before, so I'm not familiar with the story, and I didn't share in any part of the nostalgia factor. Still, for forty five minutes, my friend and I had a great time. It's fun, but every critique and compliment is overshadowed by it's length! Honestly, I felt as if I was playing literally a third of the game. It's worth 10 bucks if you're a die hard contra fan.... I suppose. Full Review »

Nostalgia element was fun and I was happy with the game, until less than an hour in I passed it. Yes I was playing on easy, but an hour?! Even for $10 that is still too much for such a short game. Due to the length I just can't recommend it, there are much better (and longer) WiiWare games out there (NyqQuest for example is at least 3-4 hours long). Full Review »
