Mar 5, 201291The Mario Party series might be a bit long in the tooth, but it shouldn't be counted out; there have been enough tweaks and changes to keep things interesting and the minigames are as fun as ever.
-
Apr 2, 201290Mario Party 9 is a resounding success on so many levels, adding plenty of extra variety to differentiate itself from previous entries, whilst also learning important lessons from the limited-yet-fun Wii Party.
-
Feb 15, 201286A wonderfully refreshing revamp. [March 2012, p.102]
-
Apr 2, 201285Another worthy release in a successful series. They've stuck to a tried and true formula: beloved characters, fun, variety and a fast pace, which is easy to play for the whole family.
-
Mar 12, 201285The game manages to keep the hectic and wild spirit Mario Party is known for while eliminating superfluous gimmicks and features that slowed the pace down instead of making it equally interesting for everybody.
-
Mar 7, 201285Mario Party 9 is yet another great opportunity to have a great time playing with your family and friends. It is a very approachable game that players with few experience in videogames can enjoy, although not as much as Wii Party. Mario Party 9 is midway between minigames compilations for experts and those for beginners and achieves to offer a very fun experience.
-
Mar 5, 201285The new developer combined new features with the good old gameplay. That's fresh and more enjoyable for party game fans. The singleplayer mode is merely solid, while the multiplayer is pure entertainment.
-
Apr 19, 201280The randomness of some of the board effects can be frustrating; it's akin to Nintendo grabbing the chess board mid-match and throwing it across the room. It doesn't seem fair and there's nothing you can do about it except enjoy the experience while it lasts. And the kids liked it.
-
Apr 17, 201280Excellent game to play with your kids and really strange friends. Minigames work better than usual because they use less motion controls and focus more on fun ideas. [Apr 2012]
-
Mar 14, 201280The essence of the console version, but it doesn't carry over the explosive enjoyment. [Apr 2012, p.88]
-
Mar 14, 201280Seasoned Party-goers and newcomers looking for an entry point into the prolific franchise, however, should consider crashing Mario's latest shindig.
-
Mar 11, 201280Mario Party 9 is a great way to heal a sick franchise. The new developer team has done a great job changing the main structure of the original Mario Party, creating a brand new experience with the perfect multiplayer mode.
-
Mar 6, 201280Refreshing, but there's potential for even better things next time. [March 2012, p.92]
-
Mar 6, 201280Mario Party 9 consists almost entirely of positive changes for the series. Sure, if you don't have any partying friends this won't be the game for you, but the challenges and simple layout of the game make this a brilliant Wii game.
-
Mar 6, 201280If you lost interest some time around the umpteenth GameCube iteration, or the woeful Mario Party 8, MP9 is a good excuse to come back. Enough of the old concerns have been addressed and the game is more focused than ever, marking a return to simplicity that reminds us why we loved huddling around those old Nintendo consoles in the first place.
-
Mar 3, 201280It's been five years since the last game and the Mario Party series probably needed that. New developer Nd Cube has changed a lot of things, all to the better, and Mario Party 9 probably is the best game in the series.
-
Mar 1, 201280It's less predictable than its previous instalments, smartly ditching the dead wood in favour of a fresh approach that emphatically reminds us why the series has been going for 14 years.
-
Feb 18, 201280Much has been improved since the eighth iteration, and there's a slew of new content to unlock and explore. Even the skeptics should be charmed once they've played a game or two. [March 2012, p.84]
-
May 23, 201279Mario Party 9 is unlike anything in the series before, although it seems familiar.
-
Mar 13, 201278The ruleset has been completely revamped. You still need quite a bit of luck when it comes to the dice, but tactics and a hint of strategy have been added. Mario's get-together has never been better.
-
Mar 12, 201276Excluding Wii Party, Mario Party 9 is the first we've seen in nearly five years of what was historically a perennial series. This break in the action has provided an opportunity for reinvention, and to some extent, that's what's occurred. What it all boils down to is a clever, unexpected, and much-needed reboot of a series that previously didn't seem to have much left in the way of creativity. It won't turn haters into lovers, but it's most certainly a step in the right direction for the franchise.
-
Apr 30, 201275For those looking for the complete reinvention of the wheel will have to wait a bit longer. But Mario Party 9 has had enough tweaked in it to breathe some much-needed life back into the series.
-
Mar 31, 201275Mario Party 9 features less motion control, fewer board-game rules, and more of a videogame feel, but there's still plenty left to chance. Those waiting for a full-scale overhaul will have to wait a little longer.
-
Mar 22, 201275Though some of the minigames can be boring and uninspired, others can be a hoot while playing with friends.
-
Mar 20, 201275Mario Party 9 changes its own formula with new mechanics. Finally more balance between luck and player skill - it is still one of the most fun games to play with friends, absolutely the king of party games. A good restart from the last chapter.
-
Mar 9, 201275In the end, Mario Party 9 remains what each game in the series has been: a party game. Part of me wants to berate Nintendo for making nine Mario Party games in little more than a decade, but I've got to applaud them in this case. There's no flashy new control scheme or extraneous microphone peripheral in Mario Party 9. No, in lieu of any fancy new hardware, Nintendo simply gave the old gang the keys to the company car and actually changed the rules of the game for once-and it works surprisingly well.
-
Mar 14, 201272An over-reliance on random chance over strategy can quickly derail the experience when things go awry at the worst possible time, but when matches come together with the right balance, Mario Party 9 does deliver the fun this exuberant series is known for.
-
Apr 25, 201270Nice party game is filled with large amounts of enjoyable mini-games – the only cons are the great dependency on luck and missing online multiplayer. [Apr 2012]
-
Apr 16, 201270Mario Party 9 is the series' best episode after the fourth. The new elements introduced, like the players moving all together, are not completely convincing, but the formula designed hanging around funny minigames and 3 pals around still works.
-
Apr 4, 201270Exactly the kind of the change needed by the franchise, although this new game depends too much on luck and randomness.
