Mario Sports Mix it's not the best party game for the Nintendo Wii, but Square Enix managed to put together a decent number of sports that will surely entertain you and your friends.

The individual sports woven into this collection may not be quite as fleshed-out as you'd expect from standalone games, but there's enough depth and variety to merit some marathon rounds alone or with friends. It's easy to get sucked into a quick game or two and wind up blowing through hours of matches.

While Mario Sports Mix may lack the depth of Mario Tennis and Golf, it's a great example of a more casual Mario title that multiple players can enjoy. Not all the disciplines on offer will be to everyone's taste, but there's enough good stuff here to last you a fair while and Square Enix have given it oodles of imagination.

This game is worthy of a spot alongside Mario's best sports titles. [Feb 2011, p.82]

Mario Sports Mix isn't the kind of game that one would play for long stints, but it is much more interesting than, let's say, Wii Party. If you're caught (for some odd and unbelievable reason) in the middle between the two, go with Sports Mix.

Mario Sports Mix is nothing revolutionary, but in keeping with its franchise brethren, it does provide ample multiplayer entertainment should you happen to have a couple of friends willing to participate.

Despite the faults the individual events have, winning the Star Cup in all four sports unlocks a bonus cameo that almost makes all of the earlier tedium worth it.

A good mix between gameplay and online matches. Despite the poor AI and a short single player mode, this is definitely best served with friends.

Mario Sports Mix had the opportunity to be a great sports games collection on the Nintendo Wii, but there are only four games included and there is no commentator – a great flaw, as comments on your performance usually enhance the fun. Then again, the multiplayer mode, easiness, and beginner friendliness make the game quite entertaining.

Overall this is a good game for playing with friends, with lots of comic situations and a potential for high competitiveness between the players. However, its gameplay can become too simple and repetitive for some players.

The game plays great, and while it might be tough, never to the point where it feels cheap or frustrating. Instead, the sports play too similarly to each other and there isn't any challenge to winning the tournaments in each cup.
  12. Single-player is a bore, but this is thankfully saved by local and online multiplayer. [Feb 2011, p.84]

A fun mix of sports in an enjoyable package. Great for multiplayer sessions but could get boring by yourself.

Nice compilation of arcade sports with famous Nintendo characters shows its best in tactical basketball and wild hockey. [Issue#201]

By spreading itself more thinly, it loses some of the strategic depth which these more focused games provide. [Issue#106, p.121]

Like any of the Mario sports games, Mario Sports Mix is best enjoyed with friends.

The lack of additional modes and endearing mini-games also aid in making Mario Sports Mix a fun try but not a lifetime investment.

Mario Sports Mix is a mixed bag: basketball, volleyball and the multiplayer are fantastic, but the rest is hardly worth looking at. This inconsistency doesn't fit Mario at all, and as a result Mario Sports Mix lacks the usual level of polish often present in Nintendo-titles.

Mario Sports Mix lacks the depth of other Mario's sport titles, but delivers a lot of fun especially in multiplayer. Basketball and Hockey will gives you plenty of replay value, while Dodgeball and Volley need a good amount of patience, especially in single-player.

As a whole package, this isn't quite up to the standard you'd hope for from Mario Sports, but it certainly doesn't damage the series' reputation.

Fun, but not quite what we were expecting from a Mario sportive franchise. Square Enix has managed to create an entertaining game lacking multiple game options and a variety of sports. It's a multiplayers focused experience, so if you're looking for something interesting to play with a couple of friends, here's the best choise so far on 2011.

Mario and his friends take on yet another sports game. This time the game revolves around basketball, ice hockey, dodge ball and volley ball. The selection is slim, but only half of the package work as it should. Still it's been sold for a full price. [May 2011]

Mario Sports Mix has become a decent game. It's a game that you'll play when you have company, but boredom will strike soon because of the lack in variation.

Sports Mix is tailor-made for parties and other casual multiplayer experiences. The controls are easy to learn, the mechanics of each game are immediately familiar to anyone who's ever heard of the four sports on offer, and the interface is friendly as can be.

Hockey is so much fun that it will win over even the most jaded skeptics. But dodgeball will get old very quickly, and volleyball is just plain awful. While multiplayer is where this game shines, the single-player tournaments are fairly dull until the second playthrough, when alternate paths and bonus challenges become available.

With a few tweaks this could have been quite the sports package. But as things stand, it's as missable as an Emile Heskey chance on goal.

Unless you intend on playing this strictly with friends I recommend passing on Mario's latest sports endeavor. There are much better party games and mascot sports titles available for the system.

The package just lacks the substance to keep you coming back. Mario Sports Mix is good for a diversion, but it ultimately makes for an underwhelming trip back to the Mushroom Kingdom.

It doesn't have the depth and appeal of one of the bigger sports game, but it's too barebones to be a cool mini-game party sports game.

Even though four sports are included on this disc, none of them stand out as something that needs to be played.

Some degree of multiplayer fun is guaranteed, but the lack of any real depth "condemns" Mario Sports Mix as a simplistic and ephemeral experience. Mario sits on his throne for thirty years now, and it's certainly not due to games like this.

Mario Sports Mix is a good game, especially for a younger audience that might enjoy the cartoony sports action or to play with friends. It's just not great.
  38. 60
Only three of the four sports on offer are worth playing, and the single player experience is hampered by bad AI and an insultingly easy beginners league for every sport that has to be completed to advance to the more interesting stuff. With four players though, the game shines and can be barrels of fun.

Years of training, and Mario still hasn't succeded in getting fit. But, guess what, this time he hasn't struggled at all.

If you're a more advanced player, dedicated single-sport Mario titles like Super Mario Sluggers and Mario Strikers Charged are far more substantial and enjoyable experiences. But if you want a colorful pick-up-and-play game to enjoy with your less gaming-inclined friends and family, Mario Sports Mix ought to work just fine -- just don't expect to dig it out too often otherwise.

Too few and too uninspired sports make Nintendo's latest party game a rather mediocre mix.

This remains an odd mix of sporting events that adds little to the franchise or the party game genre that Nintendo created and still dominates.

The concept is great, but the fact that this title doesn't set itself apart from other sport-themed games is dissatisfying, especially since it involves one of the most beloved characters in video game history.

Maybe they should give the reins back to Camelot before they think about releasing another Mario Sports title, because Square Enix have proven they have trouble cutting the mustard.

Mario Sports Mix contains an alright mix of party sports games, but I don't think players will leave their cart racing, bowling or olympics for long. Basketball is quite charming though, and is the best game of the bunch.
  48. Feb 8, 2011

With a collection of diverting though non-essential sports, your enjoyment of Mario Sport Mix will largely depend on the likelihood of constant multiplayer battles, though admittedly in that respect the title still pales in comparison to Wii Sports Resort and even the original Wii Sports.

It's a fax-machine quality retread of such startling inanity that, at a point, you might actually find your fond memories of Mario sports games past overwritten by this blur of dispassionate mediocrity.

Mario's latest athletic endeavor lacks the sort of skillful competition that could have made for a compelling challenge.

Mario Sports Mix has a nice Wiimote gameplay, and both Volleyball and Dodgeball mini-games will grant you a nice and funny afternoon. But beyond that... with but four sports and repetitive game mechanics, the title seems to be a little stingy compared to Wii Sports Resort or the Mario & Sonic series. On the Wii, Mario Sports Mix comes only as the third wheel.
