Onslaught may be one of the toughest games I’ve ever reviewed for IGN. Here you’ve got a $10 WiiWare game that pushes the download service to its limits, but is a huge mess of different quality standards.
  2. It proves that it's possible to make a decent FPS title at an affordable price with limited space resources. Sure, first-person shooters have been done before on the Wii and done better, but for $10 Onslaught is hard to resist.
  3. As long as you're not expecting thrills or surprises, Onslaught's by-the-numbers bug blasting serves as a fair placeholder until something bigger and better (The Conduit, perhaps?) comes along. That's not exactly a ringing endorsement, but for shooter-starved WiiWare fans in this case, something may be better than nothing.
  4. After giving it some thought, I actually can see how Onslaught could be someone's game of the year, but only if that someone was very young, and/or has never played a online FPS before.
  5. It's good value if you just want to spend the afternoon mindlessly shooting cannon fodder. Don't expect anything different, though. [May 2009, p.77]
  6. Further proof of the Wii's gift for first person shooters, if only a more experienced developer would try.
  7. Hudson has achieved the unthinkable and created an original and entertaining Japanese developed FPS which comes as a great surprise. This is a must-download for fans of the FPS genre.
  8. Onslaught is a peculiar game: even if it looks like a First Person Shooter, the kind of the action and the enemy routines recall the scrolling shooter of the 80’s. Even the “Perfect Score” philosophy and the outstanding difficulty remind of an “old style” game. The price of the download is not that high, and the multiplayer mode sustain a discrete replay value. Perfect for those who love challenging games and for the Wii owners that suffer for shooters lack.
  9. If you want an online first person shooter for Wii, you might be better off saving up for Call Of Duty but this isn't bad for the price.
  10. Onslaught is a real deal, particularly if you are looking for the Online component. It's fun, it's complete, and even if it could be something more, I this is a game capable of filling the measures. Ended the search for those seeking a good FPS.

Full Review »
  2. I dont agree with the people who think this game is great, even for a wiiware/virtual-console game. However, I don't agree either with people who think this game is absolute garbage. It is unusual to have a game like this on wiiware especially for 1000 points which makes it something unique with a fair price. Let's talk about the good first, the weapons in general are good, not great but still something enjoyable specially a "lightwhip" that you have to attack enemies on close range. The controls are also pretty good, i feel that is the way you make a first person shooter work. I also enjoyed the boss battles even though the attack patterns were extremely repetitive and I loved the fact that different types of weapons work better with different types of "alien bugs." Now comes the bad, most of this has to do with repetition which makes the game tedious after a while. There were very few enemy types and they were used again in every single level which took the excitement out of it. Another issue was the environments, they were really similar, basically all the planet you are in looks the same, there is nothing stunning to it. Finally my biggest issue, there is a time limit to every level when its not even necessary, why cant we just go at our own pace instead of rushing through the level to get a better score and not loosing the mission? This was just bad. The multiplayer is basically co-op campaign, not competitive multiplayer but it changes the action a little bit making it enjoyable. Overall I think it is not worth buying despite the good price, if people want a first person shooter they shouldn't support the more average ones because there are better games out there and those deserve attention. 3. A terrible first person shooter with no redeeming value for wii about massacring giant mutant bugs on an alien planet... ya that pretty much sums it up. Full Review »
