  • Summary: [WiiWare] In Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure!, players control the rainbow-magic-wielding Bubby or Bobby as they climb the seven seamless areas of a tower reaching the heavens while defeating enemies with their rainbow powers. Bosses controlled by the scientific genius Dr. Crescent await players at the end of every area. Race through every area within the allotted time to meet the rainbow-colored Holly's Comet. There are three game modes: Story mode, which tells the tale of Holly's Comet; Challenge mode, where players attempt to climb as high as they can; and Time Attack, where players select an area and see how fast they can climb it. Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure! is an exhilarating action game where you use rainbows to climb into the heavens. [Nintendo] Expand

On the gameplay side of things, Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure! is a fair conversion of the arcade original Rainbow Islands' game design for WiiWare -- so the handful of fans who've loved that game since the '80s will no doubt be delighted to see the series making a comeback today.
  2. The new adventures of Bub and Bob has many problems. Although it has not changed the basic idea, it generally varies less than the original title. Graphics, questionable stylistic choices, and anonymous sound effects make us regret the original game. Control system is accurate and raises the gaming experience. Rainbow Islands therefore appears as a middling product which, although amusing at times, failed to repeat the magic of the original because of some unfortunate choices in the development phase.
  3. A straight remake would have been better. [July 2009, p.60]
  4. 50
Mediocre. It lacks in overall game play and its weak multiplayer offering and brief amount of game time will leave players wanting.
  5. Without wishing to sound like the kind of grumpy gamer you’d expect to object to this harmless update, Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure! is a classic case of “if it isn’t broken, don’t try to fix it.”
  6. With all the problems from the original game and without great additions, Towering Adventure! is a very disappointing download, on the opposite hand of Bubble Bobble Plus! (and 200 Nintendo Points more expensive than it).
  7. A pale shadow of the original turning a perfectly constructed platformer into a bland retread.
