Characters can be approached but offer different responses and be found in different places, while new clues and gameplay paths can be followed. The title follows Harry Mason, as he attempts to unravel the mystery of his missing daughter, Cheryl. A broken man, Mason’s investigations lead him to the mist-shrouded, snowy streets of Silent Hill: a malevolent town where the shadows play host to a wealth of evil, misshapen creatures. Designed to make full use of the Wii's unique controllers, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories uses the Wii Remote as a torch and cell phone as Mason looks for clues. The torch is vital for scouring the darkened, abandoned buildings of Silent Hill, while the phone acts as a secondary user interface, allowing the player to access maps via its GPS capabilities and take pictures of interesting elements. Likewise, the Wii Remote also can be used to pick up, examine and manipulate items to solve puzzles along the journey. Such technology was not available when the original Silent Hill was released in 1999, and its inclusion showcases Konami’s determination to enhance the playing experience with new, available technology. Also new to Shattered Memories is a psyche profile element, which monitors every aspect of player’s reactions - from where they explore first, items that have been examined, and their reaction to those they meet. Small visual elements will also be altered slightly, adding to the oppressing atmosphere where nothing is what it seems. The psyche profile will adapt Harry’s actions as and when he meets normal-looking people or the game's many inhuman denizens. [Konami] Expand

  1. While Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is a total departure in every way from what Konami proper had started, it manages to reinvigorate the series. This "re-imagining" could have been a story rehash, instead we get a brilliantly deep game with subtle subtext and surprising symbolism.
  2. It’s one of the most innovative and enjoyable survival horrors for many a year.
  3. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is without a doubt one of the year’s finest games, and is another example of a well made third-party game for the Wii.

So though it may not be the unqualified success we were hoping for, Shattered memories proves an audacious and ultimately compelling experiment. [Holiday 2009, p.84]
  5. This reimagining significantly alters the Silent Hill formula, but for those willing to put up with the occasional frustrating chase sequence, Shattered Memories is a masterpiece of atmosphere and storytelling that demands your attention.
  6. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories gets a lot right, and just a couple of major things wrong. If you're in the mood for spine tingling uneasiness, and can bear some frustration, be sure to play this one.

It's an incredibly original and ambitious project, but the weight of its problems, both old and new, keep it from being much more than a nostalgic love letter addressed to diehard series fans.

I just finished this game and have nothing but good things to say about it. The voice acting is phenomenal, the graphics are easily the best I just finished this game and have nothing but good things to say about it. The voice acting is phenomenal, the graphics are easily the best on the Wii, the motion controls are slick and the pacing is perfect. The story is perfectly told without a trace of ancient mystical cults to ruin it. It's a short game, but merits multiple playthroughs. In a word, perfect. Collapse

My absolute favorite survival horror game of all time. Mind blowing graphics and effects and a truly involved, dark story with many twistsMy absolute favorite survival horror game of all time. Mind blowing graphics and effects and a truly involved, dark story with many twists depending on how you play and answer the psych profiles. A melancholy game for those with true "mature" tastes. A game that successfully manage to engage the player in the storytelling, a game that features clever, immersive writing that tells a story interactively and engages the player in everything, instead of just letting him play the action sequences in a blockbuster hollywood movie, a game that uses all it's assets to tell that story and not just dialogue and guns, deserves nothing but praise. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories might not be what you expect from a Silent Hill game, and it's actual scaryness can be disputed. But it is the best story told interactively since portal, or since Silent Hill 2 if you limit yourself to the genre. If you're even remotely interested in the medium of games as storytelling medium, you owe yourself to play Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Expand

Nice graphics, nice voice acting, good horror atmosphere. The soundtrack is sad and emotive and finally the ending is breathtaking. However the game is too short with few enemies. There are no bosses and you only have to run and run. A rare but incomplete gem. Expand

Very immersive and technically impressive. Keeps you engaged and eager to find out what happens next. Ends rather abruptly, and never really Very immersive and technically impressive. Keeps you engaged and eager to find out what happens next. Ends rather abruptly, and never really offers too much challenge. Mazes are a little confusing at times, and throwing off enemies can be a little unresponsive at times, but it never ruins the game's flow or becomes overly frustrating. Couldve used more danger outside of the ice mazes. Ending doesn't (as always) offer enough clarity or closure for the story. Silent Hill games usually have more blood and disturbing images; something this title is surprisingly lackinh. Overall a great game worthy of Silent HIll fans or Wii owners looking for a mature title. Expand

I actually think this is a 5 or a 6. However, seeing "voice acting is bang on" makes me think that the developers are playing up the rating I actually think this is a 5 or a 6. However, seeing "voice acting is bang on" makes me think that the developers are playing up the rating here. The game isn't even out in Europe and "bang on" is not an expression that is commonly used in America. Just rent the game and see if you want to buy it.. Graphics are decent but its not scary enough to warrant multiple playthroughs. Expand
