  1. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a great game that new and old player would love, even if you're playing on the original genesis, which I highly doubt, or on the Wii's Virtual Console or Xbox Live Arcade. This game was the first game I ever played and I immediately loved it. When I was young, I couldn't stop playing it, I remember I always lost at the final boss and never got the chance to beat it, until I bought the game on the Wii Virtual Console 10 years later and finally completed what I started. I don't know if players today would even want to play this game, but it is definitely worth playing. Expand
  2. Reviewing the PS3 version of this game on the SMDUC. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a brilliant sequel to an already brilliant game. Sonic 2 continues Sonic's adventures with Sonic and his new sidekick, Miles "Tails" Prower trying to foil Dr Robotnik's evil plan once again. Dr Robotnik wants the chaos emeralds to power the Death Egg. Tails is a welcome addition to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise; he looks so cute and fluffy! The graphics haven't really improved over Sonic the Hedgehog but that's nothing really to be critical about due to the fact that the first one looked so colourful and vibrant. The backgrounds of the levels look lovely and each zone has its unique background and theme design so it keeps the game from looking repetitive. The levels are well designed and provide a challenge. The game play hasn't really changed much from the first game which may be a mild disappointment but it's not a huge issue. Sonic has to make his way through acts, avoiding obstacles and trying to get to the end of the act in less than 10 minutes; the time limit doesn't seem an issue though. Sonic has gained a new useful ability called "The super dash attack" and this involves Sonic curling up to his ball state, spinning while stationary and then shoot off forward in the direction, he was facing. This proves useful in some cases when you want to gather momentum when you're in a tight space with not much room to manoeuvre, to get up a steep hill or jump. To be honest, I didn't know Sonic could do this move for a while! Like the first game, sometimes you can run though a section of the level as fast as lightning but then you are forced to navigate through obstacles to avoid either falling down a bottomless pit or getting crushed or killed by an enemy. Some parts of the levels will see you speeding along, going through loop de loops and being bounced around the place by (sometimes annoying) springboards. One zone in particular has you bouncing off bumpers, using pinball style flippers to gain some air and going into slot machines and try to strike it lucky with the reels; perfect for people who like Sonic and gambling! The controls (even though I'm using a PlayStation 3 controller) are great and I'm glad they've kept the controls the same as the last game. In some cases, you'll see Sonic wiz along sections of a level as fast as a plane, getting transported from one section of a level to another and it makes me say "god, slow down Sonic!" The TV's that give you items, return. One big difference from the first Sonic game is there is no longer 3 acts in a zone (except for the 8th zone). This a good move by Sonic Team because it adds more variety to the level design due to the fact that you are only playing 2 acts with a similar theme rather than 3 although 3 of the zones in this game only feature 1 act. The game is longer too, and the levels are bigger in scope. Several of the levels also feature multiple paths so you can explore and find hidden items, but eventually lead to 1 exit. The music is incredible: The music is so memorable and along with another one of my all time favourite games, Dynamite Headdy and the first Sonic game, just shoves chart music and most of the composed soundtracks in modern games today down the toilet. The special stages are good to play if a little bit pointless, considering you just get a chaos emerald and if you get all 7, you can transform into Super Sonic. These special stages demonstrate some very good 3D effects for the Mega Drive as you run through (with Tails) a 3D pipe and collect enough rings and avoid bombs to get the chaos emerald. I do find it hard to do the special stages as it requires you to change direction quickly to collect rings and avoid bombs. Tails (if he's with you) seems to keep smacking into the bombs and therefore losing you rings and making it harder to reach the target ring count to get the chaos emerald; Tails apparently doesn't know the difference between bombs and rings. If the first game was hard for you, then this game is even harder. This game has more boss battles, which even though all but 2 have you facing Dr Robotnik and his various contraptions of carnage, are much better boss battles than the first game and present you with a good fair challenge and are enjoyable to fight; the 8th and 11th boss battle did get me frustrated though. The 9th zone demands some precision jumping because one slip can kill you. Some enemies are sometimes very hard to avoid; those freaking Asterons that shoot projectiles spring to mind. I did get annoyed by one instance where I was trying to get an extra life TV on top of a platform, I hit the bottom of the TV, the TV came down and crushed me and I got killed. Geez, talk about an extra life TV losing me a life. I do wish this game had a save option because it is quite a big game. This game is a small improvement over its predecessor and definitely one of the best games I've ever played. Expand
  3. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the first Sonic game I had ever played on the SegaGenesis and it felt good to feel like the fastest thing alive again on the Wii Virtual Console. This game introduced us to Sonic's most iconic sidekick Tails, including some catchy music tracks, a bit of multiplayer and some memorable levels like Casino Nights (my favourite). My only problem with Sonic the Hedgehog 2, like many titles on the SegaGenesis, there is no saving options to save your game progress. Although, if you are an old schooler who enjoys retro games, you will find this little nitpick not a problem at all. Sonic fans and retro gamers will absolutely get a spin playing either Sonic, Tails or Sonic and Tails in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Collapse
