  • Summary: Super Mario Galaxy 2, the sequel to the galaxy-hopping original game, includes the gravity-defying, physics-based exploration from the first game, but is loaded with entirely new galaxies and features to challenge players. On some stages, Mario can pair up with his dinosaur buddy Yoshi and use his tongue to grab items and spit them back at enemies. Players can also have fun with new items such as a drill that lets our hero tunnel through solid rock. [Nintendo] Expand

  1. 100
This is a rare occasion when the hype can actually be justified; Super Mario Galaxy 2 is, quite simply, a masterpiece.
  2. 100
A simple extension of the Galaxy concept, Super Mario Galaxy 2 can't possibly have the same impact. But it does have the same spirit, throwing new ideas at you with gleeful and impulsive abandon, leaving you breathless, scrambling happily to keep up.
  3. This isn't a game that redefines the genre: this is one that rolls it up and locks it away.

  1. Improves on the original in every way, and ways you wouldn't know possible. The addition of Yoshi, new power-ups and millions of stuff besides that makes this a huge leap forward from Galaxy 1. A must have. Collapse
  2. I really don't know what all the fuss is about. It's a great game, yes, but not nearly the best for the console, as its score would suggest. The graphics and sound are excellent. Sometimes gameplay fails at the controls (Mainly while you walk on planets and round surfaces), but it's generally solid. The story is nonexistent, which is good since Mario should be all arcade.

What really, REALLY makes this game's score go down is tha awful amount of hand holding. I mean, halfway through the game they're still telling you how to spin with the wiimote, some of the bosses are awfully easy to beat, and you'll find yourself just blasting through the game.

To sum up, great graphics and sound, generally solid controls, nonexistent story and a terrible lack of difficulty (huge flaw). Good game overall, worth buying.

  3. When I give it a 7/10, that doesn't mean I think its bad. I just think its a little overrated. In fact, my official score is 7.3 if that makes anyone feel better.

    The Good:
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is technically brilliant. The music is masterful, the water effects and lighting effects are nice, but the overall best part about this game is the animation. Its just unbelievably gorgeous. The colors the textures. If I was rating this game based on animation, It'd get an 11/10. As I said, the music is great. There are a lot of songs in here that are stellar, but my 2 favorites are the song from the Clockworks Galaxy and The Final Bowser Battle. Also, there is a lot more freedom to run around discovering things in levels, a huge flaw I have with the original. There are these things called Comet Coins to collect which unlock a whole new set of challenges to play. My second favorite new thing they added was Chimp, a side-villain who is always harassing Mario to play his games. (Ice Skating and Bowling to name a few) These games may sound simple, but really, they're addicting and creative. And even after he gives you the star, you may go back and play said game just for the fun of it. Even small things like hidden 1-Ups and gobs of star bits can keep you in a level twice as long as you intended to be. And not only is the game creative, its really hard. A few of these levels REALLY tried my patience. The hub has been improved, too. It's like your sandbox rather than your everyday empty, bland spacecraft. There are some fun things to complete and to obtain. So, what I have just mentioned here is all the GOOD things about the game. But you may ask, "What are the bad things that take away those 27 points???" That's why we're moving onto the BAD. Duh! Duh! Duhhh!!!

    The Bad:
Well, to start, Its either you have Yoshi shown frequently in a Mario game, or I don't think its flawless. If I remember right, he only got 7 or 8 appearances. Yoshi is one of the most loveable and innocent characters in all of media. He's my favorite in the Mario series, and he really should have more appearances in this game. (12 at the very least) He's the coolest power-up in the game, too. You have his abilities to float, sprint, and my favorite, see invisible floors. And I've always loved his unique ability to eat everything. Also, I feel some of the special levels and power-ups (This is NOT counting Yoshi) are either mediocre or horrendous. The new Boo Mushroom was really goofy, and WHY would they bring back the Spring Ability?!!!!!!! Nintendo, are you deaf?! We all HATED that move. There are 2 levels in this game that I thought were just plain awful: Here's a hint: BOTH OF THEM HAD A ROLLING BALL WITH A STAR INSIDE INVOLVED. .THE ROLLING MASTERPIECE GALAXY, AND THE ROLLING COASTER GALAXY. Thank you for being abysmal. Not! Also, the Final Bowser Battle was the perfect. .way to end a game on a bad note. It was really easy and so disappointing. You would think, "Oh, crap! This is going to take forever!" 69 seconds later: "WHAT IN THE NAME OF----" Its not a nit-pick. Its a big flaw. Especially for an action adventure game. This is small, and Mario has never been about story and characters, but I think Lubba is a big step down from my 3rd favorite Mario character Rosalina, who was very complex and grand.

    The Ugly:
Unfortunately, I don't think this game is as great as the original. It just didn't feel as grand and as influential as the original. I couldn't tell you why specifically, because I really don't know. However, I have 2 theories: Number One is Super Mario Galaxy 1 that it feels more space like with the music, the art, the gameplay and so forth, and Galaxy 2 just feels like the level designs put the clouds closer to the ground.
Theory Number 2 says its just the Nostalgic Side of me speaking.

All in all, Super Mario Galaxy 2 may not surpass its predecessor, (my opinion) but its a boatload of fun for anyone who picks it up.
Super Mario Galaxy 1 rating: 9.6/10
I was talking about who my favorite Mario characters were a little, so here's my top 10 favorites:

    6. Kamella (Super Mario Galaxy 1 Boss)

  4. I'm going to be completely honest here. This isn't a bad game. It's an alright game. I feel like the reason i dislike this game is the overrating by users and critics alike. This game is so similar to the original that is mind boggling how lazy they were. Music? Reused. Mechanics? Reused.
    Graphics? Reused.
Levels? More than half of the levels in this game are reused or are similar to the originals.
Why is this game so loved? I just can't see. This is an uninspired, soulless, lazy, insulting, and boring waste of space disguising as a sequel. This game should have been an expansion for $10 on Xbo- oh wait the Wii can't do expansions (at least not well). So now let's take an honest look at the game by itself. Is it really bad? No.
Does that make it good or great or PERFECT? No.
This is an average, basic, boring, and tedious platformer with uninpired level design for the most part. The game takes a fair amount of time to beat, about 8-12 hours if you're not going for 100%. Oh about 100%.....this game has arguably the WORST EXCUSE of a 100% goal. You have to go back to every single level in the game 2-3 times each collecting hidden stars. This would be fine if it didn't KICK YOU BACK TO THE MAP every single time you collect a green star. Make them more like the silver stars, and I would have been ok with it. The reward for getting 100% is almost as laughable as New Super Mario Bros 2. All you get is 1 level that is just an excuse to put a hard level in the game (Oh and I believe you get a crown next to your profile too.....yay). The level isn't really that tough anyway, I beat it on my first try.
Talking about difficulty, let's see how well the overall challenge of this game is. There is barely any challenge at all. Long jump + spin = clear everything. No challenge, just a bunch of fake difficulty with the green stars and useless gimmicks like Yoshi (yes I believe Yoshi is a gimmick). What does the game get right? Well the new powerups are alright, the cloud suit being very useful and the rock suit being pretty fun (albeit hard to control). Also the drill power up is pretty much the only creative thing in this game, but it is used infrequently, so just forget it. Although I can't help but think that this game should have used the original's Red Star power up. Hmm, I wonder why they didn't include it...maybe you can guess why.
The new hub world is a welcome change though, even though I loved the original's, this one is more efficient. The graphics are basically unchanged, but I must admit they look good. Physics are still a little off though, with the weird floatiness. The soundtrack for the most part is unchanged, which irks me. I HATE games that reuse music, I'm a fan of original soundtracks, not remixes or reusing songs. Which sucks because if this game WAS Super Mario Galaxy 1, then I would have adored it's soundtrack! It is a really good score, just unfortunately very lazy. I can tell this game was made to cash in on the success on the first game, and I'm pretty sure most people can agree with that. The only purpose this game serves is to just be an expansion to a great platformer with the number 2 in it and change virtually nothing. Bottom line is this is lazy game. I'm completely honest here, you'll probably like the game more than me. I guess I just like more variety, better challenge, and less laziness in my platformers. I don't despise this game like I do others, just merely shrug off. If you like the game, great! Just don't go telling me to like it, because I will not. Also, a 4 to me is not a bad score, simply below average. I guess this review goes to show that a game that everyone likes may not be what it seems, hopefully you at least somewhat agree with me or at least think that is a little lazy or overrated. I HATE using the word "overrated" but this game is the finest example of the word in my opinion.
