However, a mysterious new enemy named Smithy soon appears, and Mario and Bowser are forced to fight as allies for the first time in their long history. In the quest to defeat their powerful new foe, they'll journey across a wide variety of locations (a town of mining moles, a tropical forest, a thundering waterfall--just to name a few) and tackle a mix of obstacles requiring both expert timing and strategy to overcome. Along the way, they'll gain experience and grow more powerful, while also meeting new characters whose unique abilities will be needed to take on Smithy and his gang. Striking a perfect balance of traditional RPG elements and the action-packed game play Mario is famous for, it's easy to see why this title has earned "legendary" status! Collapse

Being the first Mario RPG, it was certainly well thought through by the developers and a very well made game altogether. Using the basic RPG elements of Final Fantasy and new environments plus a progressive story makes it an addicting classic that was first released for the SNES/Virtual Console. It earns a 10/10 from me. Expand

This game was the first RPG I played when it was first released on the SNES and it is still one of my favorites on the Wii's Virtual ConsoleThis game was the first RPG I played when it was first released on the SNES and it is still one of my favorites on the Wii's Virtual Console (VC). This game was made with the help of Square-Enix (then Squaresoft). Usually, Mario games have a simple story and a linear world. In contrast, this game has a great story and a dynamic world. Some of the areas will ever change when you complete objectives in other areas, such as when you defeat a boss who is attacking a village. There are many interesting new allies (ex. Mallow and Geno) and new enemies (such as bees that can poison you and a thieving purple crocodile).. There are also a few Easter eggs for those who explore enough of the world, mostly in the appearance and names of characters. The battle system and experience system are simple to understand, but both require a small amount of strategy. Every party member shares the pool of flower points (FP), which is equivalent to MP. This game has many mini-games and side-quests in addition to the story, so that feels like there is always something to do. There are many people who I would recommend this game to: Mario fans, RPG fans, and Square-Enix fans. Expand

However, Super Mario RPG becomes an extraordinary gaming experience that will please both Mario and Final Fantasy fans alike. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars takes familiar characters from the franchise and brings them into a RPG universe with newer characters and a completely different villain that is overly powerful and threatening than Bowser. Mario teams up with two new members named Mallow and Geno, including some familiar faces in this exciting adventure filled with many comical sequences, well written dialogue and an outstanding soundtrack that will shut your brain off of reality. The battle system in the game is really solid too, though trying to get Time Hits accurately from some special attacks can be a hit or miss when attacking an enemy. It is either you know when you exactly press the button for Time Hits or not. Normally I am not a fan of RPG gaming, but Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars has to be one of the best RPG experiences I had ever played through. It is definitely a must recommend for any gamer who are drawn into storytelling and funny characters in a video game. Expand

If you like RPGs, even to this day, try this game and I bet you'll be surprised. Mario RPG is refreshingly fun and challenging, and is truly a unique way to explore the mushroom kingdom. The funny thing is this game was always so expensive back in the day that I rented it 3 times to beat it, but it was well worth it. This is a classic RPG that I still feel hasn't gotten the praise it deserves! Expand

I hate RPGs. That being said, this is one of my all time favorite games. I've seen this game criticized for supposedly "only attracting peopleI hate RPGs. That being said, this is one of my all time favorite games. I've seen this game criticized for supposedly "only attracting people to it because it has Mario". Have you even played the game if you think this? They could have replaced Mario, Peach, and Bowser with 3 new characters and it still would have been one of the best games of all time. Nobody plays this "just because Mario". They play it because it's a very well balanced RPG even to this date, the colors and art style are amazing, it has some of the best music of all time in a game, there are tons of secrets, and it's just a ton of fun. No matter how you cut it, this is a good game. Expand
