  • Summary: Set in the Mushroom Kingdom and featuring its cast of well-known characters, this adventure RPG begins with a familiar scenario: Mario must rescue Princess Toadstool from Bowser. However, a mysterious new enemy named Smithy soon appears, and Mario and Bowser are forced to fight as allies for the first time in their long history. In the quest to defeat their powerful new foe, they'll journey across a wide variety of locations (a town of mining moles, a tropical forest, a thundering waterfall--just to name a few) and tackle a mix of obstacles requiring both expert timing and strategy to overcome. Along the way, they'll gain experience and grow more powerful, while also meeting new characters whose unique abilities will be needed to take on Smithy and his gang. Striking a perfect balance of traditional RPG elements and the action-packed game play Mario is famous for, it's easy to see why this title has earned "legendary" status! Expand

This is easily one of the best Mario games ever made and one of the most challenging ones as well. Being the first Mario RPG, it was certainly well thought through by the developers and a very well made game altogether. Using the basic RPG elements of Final Fantasy and new environments plus a progressive story makes it an addicting classic that was first released for the SNES/Virtual Console. It earns a 10/10 from me. Expand

This game was the first RPG I played when it was first released on the SNES and it is still one of my favorites on the Wii's Virtual Console (VC). This game was made with the help of Square-Enix (then Squaresoft). Usually, Mario games have a simple story and a linear world. In contrast, this game has a great story and a dynamic world. Some of the areas will ever change when you complete objectives in other areas, such as when you defeat a boss who is attacking a village. There are many interesting new allies (ex. Mallow and Geno) and new enemies (such as bees that can poison you and a thieving purple crocodile).. There are also a few Easter eggs for those who explore enough of the world, mostly in the appearance and names of characters. The battle system and experience system are simple to understand, but both require a small amount of strategy. Every party member shares the pool of flower points (FP), which is equivalent to MP. This game has many mini-games and side-quests in addition to the story, so that feels like there is always something to do. There are many people who I would recommend this game to: Mario fans, RPG fans, and Square-Enix fans. Expand

Game: Super Mario RPG Genre: RPG Developer: Nintendo/Squaresoft System: Super Nintendo (SNES) Total Score: 92/100 Value Score: 9.2/10

Super Mario RPG is a match made in heaven co-created by the creators of the Final Fantasy franchise Squaresoft and the creator of Super Mario: Nintendo. The game featured a visual style not often seen during the SNES era along with the fact it was greatly showcased among other titles that did offer the same style but not the quality. Along with that the game featured a original story twist to the Mario universe, colorful new and old characters, a addicting gameplay structure that will make FF fans leap in joy and a memorable soundtrack that is heavily regarded as a masterpiece even to this day.

Wow, people don't realize what a gem this game really is! If you like RPGs, even to this day, try this game and I bet you'll be surprised. Mario RPG is refreshingly fun and challenging, and is truly a unique way to explore the mushroom kingdom. The funny thing is this game was always so expensive back in the day that I rented it 3 times to beat it, but it was well worth it. This is a classic RPG that I still feel hasn't gotten the praise it deserves! Expand

The golden age of RPG includes SMRPG. Next to Chrono Trigger, it would be considered one of the better RPGs back in the days. And you will never find SquareEnix and Nintendo together ever again. The humorous characters of Mario combined with the RPG mechanics of the traditional Final Fantasy makes this an enjoyable experience for casual and hardcore players. Expand

The worst thing about this game is that it comes to an END. Seeing all the things from the Mario universe come to life in pseudo 3d form and in its first RPG was mind blowing at the time. Classic final fantasy style turned based battles with a dash of action with timed button presses made combat always fresh and entertaining. Because the plot and dialogue is so rediculous, the story is told with plenty of humor, either through jokes and jabs at the characters, or by watching Mario physically act out his end of the dialogue. The game uses beefed up technology to produce the powerful visuals on the super Nintendo cartridge. It's a game that every RPG fan should play, and every Mario fan should look into. Expand

This weekend, Nintendo releases Mario's latest adventure, "Super Mario Galaxy 2" (Wii). It seems like the perfect time to explore the history of the Mario series, and rank the previous titles from best to worst.
