  • Summary: Commanders: Attack of the Genos is an accessible turn-based tactical battle game providing challenge for all levels of players. The genetically enhanced army of the Genos have decided to attack Earth. With your powerful Commander unit, use Missile Launchers, Bombers, Infantry, and other attack units to cripple the enemy and defend your territory—online or off. Specialized attack units: Fifteen different units are provided to serve alongside your Commander unit. Use the units' unique powers to conquer the Genos. Fight fifteen different missions sprawling across three different landscapes, with two levels of difficulty for ease of play. Three intense multiplayer modes are included, allowing up to four players in Versus mode. Try the Team Play mode, or take on Skirmish with a friend on the same system. The game has two distinct endings to encourage replayability. The science-fiction setting features a gorgeous 30s Art Deco style. It's a blast from the past into the future. [Sierra Online] Expand

  1. From start to finish, it’s a fun experience and deserves to be drafted into most gamers’ Xbox LIVE Arcade library.
  2. Fans of the strategy gaming genre will find tactical challenges aplenty as both a single-player and multiplayer offering so there’s a lot to love about this title.
  3. Everything feels crafted with care, and it's a fun and stylish strategy game.
  4. Sierra has done a great job of keeping the turn based game going at a good clip and reduced the waiting times as much as humanly possible.
  5. Does what it sets out to do well and is an accessible game that budding strategiests will be able to comfortably jump into with both feet. [Issue#31, p.117]

The game mechanics are still what you'd expect from this type of strategy game (meaning they work). It's only hampered by slow, slightly cumbersome controls, the occasional viewpoint problems of a 2D-game-in-a-3D-world environment, and some of the most sadistic Achievements seen in a downloadable Xbox Live Arcade game.
  7. Annoying rather than quirky and appealing. [Apr 2008, p.99]

Very similar to Advance Wars on the DS - not quite as good but then it's under half the price so, for the money, excellent.

    BAD

    1) this game is bad is because on live you have to wait for people to finish there turns, and som e people take a long time doing that.

    2) The music gets annoying really fast

    3) lack of vehicles (such as aircraft)

    GOOD:

    1) It is a great simple rts game with retro design

    2) despite its issues on live (such as no being able to find matches) it is still fun to get friends in and play a 2v2 or free-for-all...

    3) Campaign mode i pretty nice. story could use a little work though.

Not a bad game, actual gameplay is good and it can be quite addictive. The one thing that would have made this game much better is if it had some sort of technology development system. Because of this lack depth in the game it gets a 7. Would recommend giving this game a shot, after all its ony about £5 off of xbox live. Expand

correction: if you liked advance wars, you'll find commanders a complete pile lacking in every aspect that advance wars excels in. while it isn't terrible, you can do much much better with the plethora of original and entertaining turn-based strategy titles that have come out in the past decade. sierra's cyber wars must be less than a dollar by now. Was not feeling this game really, I go back to it from time to time because I normally like turn based games and i would like the achievements from the game haha. But it for me is really really slow and have not been willing to put the effort in to finish the game. I have not been yet stopped on the campaign by the computer but its just so slow moving that i dont wanna sit there. There is a lot of "padding" in the campaign. Collapse
