+ The graphics are clean and follows the sources well. There isn't really much to complain about on that front.
+ The soundtrack, while relatively small works for the game. You'll hear many of the tracks tons of times but this is the norm for any fighting game, with few exceptions, so it isn't much of a problem.
Okay so let's move on from the good and get to the bad (That didn't take long)
The game-play, well bad isn't the word to describe it. There is a relative amount of complexity, you do have control over the actions you do, that being said it is held down by the fact that a lot of actions are too difficult to make work well enough for it to be worth your while, as evident by the fact that button mashing can get you through a lot of the fights. On the controls they are decent enough with a couple of oddities, an example being the need to rotate the analogue stick to recover (which I've never had work), to get up, or to win a struggle or beam clash. This is a fighting game, not Mario Party, Buttons please, not waggling.
The game can feel unfair at points too, but discounting the argument that it is emulating the difficulty of the fights in the actual source material it actually is irritating - for example you could be fighting Freiza in his final form only to have him power up, granting him 4 or 5 extra health bars (When you'll have already taken down about 5 to make him perform this, not to mention the fact that you begin with 4 in this particular fight) - therefore it can be an irritating game, making me want to throw down the controller in frustration.
Another problem with the game is the quite frankly awful stage design - to skip ahead though this is a problem because of one thing - this game's massive flaw which essentially ruins the entire experience;
- The camera. Christ what happened here. If it's not positioning itself in a place where you cannot see anything at all it's spinning round in circles (Seriously, it's happened a few times to me). This problem coupled with the stage design essentially ruins any fun I could have with this game. Some stages such as the Planet Namek ones (More specifically the destroyed Namek stage but it applies to the normal one too) have giant chasms which lead to the camera having a seizure. But hell, the camera messes up even when you aren't on badly made stages, if your opponent flies above or below you the camera will "attempt" to position itself in a way where you can see. Problem is it fails, plain and simple.
I'm not hating on the story itself, it's fine, but it is the way it is told. This is a deal breaker if you are new to the series, never having seen the show etc. This wasn't a problem for me personally but it definitely would be for some. The story is told through short cut-scenes, which is fine, preferable really however they do not do a good job of explaining what is happening. It has the main points and it does at least have the right characters fighting each other, but it is very matter of fact. "This is happening - now this! Why? How? WhocaresAmiright?"
One other thing which is fairly minor but important enough to bring up is the fact that it isn't entirely bug-free, one glitch which happened to me (Which caused me to lose the fight) was that my character (In this case Goku) stood still spinning in place, unable to move, attack, charge, fire ki etc, only allowing me to move again once I took a hit (Unfortunately with a Super attack, the damage done costing me the match in the end) - Another small glitch is the fact that you have to wait for the victor to be stationary for the game to end (So the game can leave you hanging for 10 seconds while the opponent charges ki for no reason) small thing, but it's a lack of polish which can lower opinions.
So basically to summarize;
+Good roster, pretty much everyone significant from the shows and movies is there although the characters feel quite samey with the exception of some combos and their special moves.
+ and - Controls are fine but some oddities.
-Mediocre stage design, some good, some bad
-A few bugs, nothing game breaking.
Basically this game is only for DBZ fans, and even then that's a push (As I said before I like the series quite a bit) and is definitely not for a general consumer. Everyone should probably just pass on this one, nothing to see here. (I've heard the sequel has a few improvements, but I am sure I won't be picking it up as apparently it suffers some similar problems, like the camera).

Dec 5, 2013As much as I love Dragon ball this game just did not do it for me, whilst the game in itself isn't necessarily bad, intricate fightingAs much as I love Dragon ball this game just did not do it for me, whilst the game in itself isn't necessarily bad, intricate fighting controls with some cool animation, in my opinion it lacks replay-ability I got rapidly bored was not driven by any sense of story and didn't feel like I was getting anything out of the game. I guess the reason I am being so harsh is because the last DBZ game I played was on gameboy advance (the legacy of goku) and it was astronomically better than this game. Can't someone please give us an rpg style open world next gen game in the Dragonball world.… Full Review »
