If you are more concerned about recreating the spectacle of Dragon Ball Z than playing a refined game, you will have a good time here. Battle of Z values style over substance, but for an anime about super humans fighting super aliens while flying through the air, maybe it is the appropriate direction.

Battle of Z had a lot of potential, but like so many DBZ games before it, it fails to capture the opportunity. The unnecessary amount of grinding required to progress through a story we’ve seen a dozen times before overshadows the decent combat.

It's probably the most bland and repetitive DBZ game of this generation, with its only saving grace being the immense roster of characters.

A poor show for the last Dragon Ball of this generation. Visually lacking, extremely simple on its mechanics, poor on its fanservice and without local multiplayer modes. Its online team battles could be interesting, but the game didn't need to be that flat.

Still feels as shallow and monotonous as ever. [Apr 2014, p.89]

However you play, the button-mashing combat proves crushingly simplistic and repetitive, and moving around the stages is awkward and disorienting, with a dizzying camera that makes Battle of Z a pretty ideal motion-sickness simulator.

Ultimately, Battle of Z offers Dragon Ball Z fans more of the same: another chance at seeing their favorite characters pummel each other. However, without a real fighting engine to support the game, hardcore fans haven't just played this before, they've probably already played something better.

love the game for the first time 8 characters can be on the same screen and it feel more like the actual show . the boss battle in the gamelove the game for the first time 8 characters can be on the same screen and it feel more like the actual show . the boss battle in the game are amazing and they really capture the feel of the anime series. Also they brought cool customization options like being able to change you characters color, and even tho this is a small thing it feels pretty awesome. I also like to add that co-op works fantastic. If you a fan of the dragon ball series give this game a try Expand

When you first watched DBZ the expectations for a video game came along with it. You would wonder how would they incorporate that action within the video game world. Well this is it. For a DBZ game, its great! Do not compare it to fighters or any other genre but its own franchise. Granted, the controls are simple enough and the depth of the story mode isn't too vast, but the gameplay as a DBZ game is amazing. The RPG element compliments the attributes of the anime characters which is a plus because it takes THINKING. The two things real gamers want is great gameplay, decent graphics, and a challenge. You will get a challenge trying to Soul Revive an entire team against a Ape Gohan. Give it a shot with the mindstate that its a DBZ title you can control and not compare it to Titanfall, Phantom Pain, and The Division. Expand

Picked this up recently on sale and as a fan of the series I found the game thoroughly enjoyable. Story mode captures the feel of the seriesPicked this up recently on sale and as a fan of the series I found the game thoroughly enjoyable. Story mode captures the feel of the series brilliantly. Combat felt a little simplistic at first but I've found it grew on me to the point that it is now my favorite dbz game. The AI of team mates could be better, but with a little effort spent leveling up their partner level I've not had too much trouble. The lack of couch co-op or versus is definitely a drawback and my score would have been higher had this been implemented. Expand

The story has much replay value and takes a decent amount of time to complete the mechanics are basic but interesting enough. The main flaw of the story is oddly enough the terrible story it passes for a story to bridge the gaps between different types of battles but otherwise disappoints. The graphics are sub-par at best but never an eyesore the sound quality on the other hand is top notch making the game feel almost like the anime series. With 67 decently diverse characters to choose from battle of z stands as one of the better dragon ball games. The main flaws of the game are the lack of offline multiplayer and somewhat limited choices for ways to play (only two main game modes). Overall battle of z is a worthwhile buy for fans but for general fighting game fans you should wait till the price drops. Final score 7.5. Expand
