  • Summary: Set in Ancient China during the 3rd century, Dynasty Warriors 6 immerses gamers in a truly cinematic kung-fu action experience. Celebrated characters have been completely re-imagined with new weapons and fighting techniques motion-captured from some of today’s leading stuntmen and women in Asia. With the game’s new “Renbu” attack system and game controls, players can execute lightning-fast combos and the most dazzling fighting moves with ease. Developed from the ground up exclusively for next-generation platforms, the game's proprietary engine delivers the most chaotic and challenging Tactical Action experience to date. Players can use the landscape to elude the thousands of soldiers swarming the battlefield. But as players move and attack, adaptable enemy A.I. devises offensive and defensive combat tactics, and can retaliate with packs of fierce hunting dogs and patrol boats. All of the explosive action comes to life in high definition, 60 frames per second graphics. [KOEI] Expand

  1. While not every change has been positive, the series was in desperate need of a fresh start, and now, in its sixth major iteration, it has one.
  2. This is a small step forward, but for a series that hasn’t moved an inch over five installments, it’s a mind-boggling breakthrough.
  3. Fans of Dynasty Warriors 6 will know exactly why they like this game and no further understanding is needed.
  4. The best thing to say about Dynasty Warriors 6 is that it's an easy way to kill quite a few hours, but that doesn't make it particularly good.
  5. Dynasty Warriors 6 isn't properly bad, it doesn't contain anything appalling. However, average is the suitable word here.
  6. Visually, it's very similar to Warriors Orochi on Xbox 360, while the gameplay and appeal are as stagnant and underwhelming as they've ever been.
  7. Gone are the days when it was acceptable to include hour-long levels and no checkpoints. [Issue#31, p.92]

This game nearly doubled PS3 sales in Japan when they came bundled together. The Dynasty Warriors series is so wildly popular there that changing the basic gameplay would be suicide for Koei. This is basically the Japanese version of Madden in the US. Not a lot of changes from year to year, but still wildly successful.

I am a big fan of the Dynasty Warriors series, but I have no illusions about the "ground breaking" design. This game, quite simply, is HUGE amounts of non-complex fun. There are levels of complexity that fans will dig into, but if you have never played a DW game before you can just pick it up and instantly become the bully on the school yard of feudal China.

This iteration of DW actually does have some major improvements over its predecessors, most notable is some actually decent storytelling and voice work (and translations) which have been somewhat lacking in other versions. You can also customize your character's abilities to a small degree as well as a number of other small tweaks that Koei has made.

Basically it's like this; saying that this is the same game you have played since college is identical to saying that playing Madden now is the same as when it was on the Genesis in '96. It is, and it isn't.

I urge you to try out this game, even just to rent it. Koei games never get good reviews because their games aren't cutting edge, but they are a LOT of fun.
