This is a really great game, i would have rated it higher but the longer I played the less interested i became. The downside of this game is its repetitiveness, having to travel to the other end of the map can take ages if youre not near a bus and drags the game out too long. However it has amazing graphics, great shooting gameplay and sound, and is an overall very good game.

No game is perfect, but Far Cry 2 is amazing on many levels-first and foremost, having the ability to EASILY create maps (that foster the style of 1st person shooter gameplay YOU prefer) and the ABSOLUTELY STUNNING visuals, not to mention the complete freedom to destroy anything and everything in the environment is truly AMAZING. It is a must to own, and this kind of game development should be supported and encouraged--user maps help increase the lifespan of the game and keep it fun for months to come. I bought both the XBOX360 and PS3 versions, and I haven't noticed all of the feature differences, but both look and play amazingly--if I had a PC with enough horsepower I would buy the PC version on steam--KUDOS to UBISOFT for VASTLY improving upon the original. Only good things I can think of about the game are the realistic graphics, the fantastic map editor and the fun online play. Unfortunately, the single-player mode is seriously flawed in various ways. One of the most annoying things about this game is that every single human being in the game that isn't white or living in a town is out to kill you, almost like zombies. On sight of you, even from a distance they make it their mission to follow you and kill you. This poses problems, especially when you are in a mission or when you are trying to get from one place to the next. It seems that everyday civilians have completely vanished off the face of the Earth in this game and have been replaced by blood-thirsty savages. The game had the potential to tell a story of a practically lawless land and the corrupt arms dealers that make huge profits by having people kill each other, but it is ruined by flawed gameplay. The driving physics are poor and the incredible environments are ruined by a lack of things to actually do apart from going on missions that involve killing people and collecting diamonds! A frustrating game - not worth getting. Expand

this is a very good game that could have been amazing given they dev team had 1 more year to work on it . the game is a open world FPS with a pretty decent set up and a nice physics system. controls are solid . there are alot of guns and its a pretty long game i think i spent 40 hours on it . when you consider the average FPS is about 7-8 hours long thats gona keep you busy . the problem with this game is how amazing it coulda been . it feels rushed and you will see that very shortly after playing the game with the voice acting alone . all the voice actors are talking as fast as they can as if they had 1 take and 5 min to get it all done . theres not alot to do in this huge open world like say as elder scrolls or fall out 3 offers. you have your main mission , buddys side quests , finding diomonds , and doing cell phone side missions . feels like they coulda added so much more because all the missions are the same for the most part thats not to say they arnt fun they are but theres not alot of diversity. travel is one of my big issues in this game you have 4 modes of transport you can walk , drive a car or in extreme rare cases providing u find one glide in a hang glider for a short period of time . or ride a bus to one of 5 locations and drive a boat.. it made me wonder why cant i fly a plane there is a airport in this game or a helicoptor . travel just seems seems tedious . now that games like oblivion and fall out 3 have fast travel. another issues is with the gaurd stations along the road you can go through kill all the enimys and drive 1 mile away and come back the same way and they all respawned. which feels rediculas why couldnt they not respawn for atleast a 24 hour game period. the gun selection is great and you can do some upgrading to the guns like better accuracy and durrability but i wish they had more like add a scope , silencer, granade launcher , lasor sighting stuff like that . the main missions you are given 2 choices you can eather go straiught for your goal or help out a buddy which is suppose to make it easier which actualy feels like it makes it harder and adds more work also no save any where feature?.the online is a mixed bag . if you get a small map its not so bad if you get a big map it seems all you do is play hide and go seek . the maps are too big ive spent the whole game with a full room of people just looking for some one to kill . ive had thoose games go 3 kills 2 deaths because you cant find any one . i know it sounds like alot to complain about and still give it a 8 but it is a fun game and id like to see more fps games go this way . its just that it needs more to really bring out what this game could be . This is a difficult review to write. On one hand, this game takes video game visuals to new heights. There were numerous times during the game in which I had to stop and enjoy the view. Ubisoft thought enough of their players to include the best console map editor on any console at the time. This spawned an army of die hard map makers and pushed replay through the roof. Because of these revelations in game development it would be easy to give this game a 10 and I wish I could. Unfortunately there are a couple of chinks in the armor that I can't ignore. While the game is high on spirit, there were some execution issues. Most notable is a huge bug the corrupted all of the players saves about 60-80% of the way through the game. The bug was unpredictable and left few clues so it was never fixed. Also it didn't effect all player but it did effect my game and one other friend of mine as well as legions of forum goers. While the intent was good, a bug this serious is a deal breaker for campaign players. At some points in the story I found the travel times to be extensive. Other then that, the open world of the campaign is lush with detail and charm. Until it crashed, was having a great time. I would definitely recommend picking up the game to anyone who thrives in an open world environment that begs to be explored. The map editor is robust and easy to use. I give high marks all around. Having played Far Cry 1 and thinking nothing of it i felt compelled to play Far Cry 2 as it appeared to be a superior sequel. After borrowing a friends copy and giving it a good play-through, i can honestly say this isn't a vast improvement over Far Cry 1. Graphically the game looks great, the enviroments are highly detailed and very lush, character models sport a decent amount of detail, and effects like wind causing fire to spread and weapons getting wear and tear over time are nice little additions...but after a while, the locales tend to look the same and they aren't as interactive as i thought they woudl be and you catch yourself shooting what is seemingly the same guy over and over (not alot of variety in enemy character models). At first i thought this to be a HUGE open-ended FPS....and it is to an extent, but there are things that keep you from exploring this seemingly open-ended world (the malaria thing sucks, it keeps you from exploring). The gameplay will suck you in for about the first couple hours....but gradually it gets more and more repetitive as you realize how limited the game really is. Far Cry 2 is an improvement over Far Cry 1....but they've still a long way to go before its a series worth keeping up with. Expand

Seems the release of Far Cry 2 has been somewhat overshadowed by other huge releases this month but make no mistake this is definitly woth a purchase. The game world is beautiful and immersive. Add to that the fire effects, mixed with the weather system, my mouth is wide open with amazement most of time i'm playing this game. Some advice for those finding getting around to be tedious, master the bus system and get off road, this is a sandbox afterall, flying off sand dunes in a jeep leads to much bone jarring amusement. Any critic from the list above who hasn't ranked this groundbreaking game over 90 doesn't know what they're talking about IMO. Most fun I've had since COD4. (@Todd D turn your sensitivity up fool). Fun for a little while, but feels unfinished at times. For example, on the xbox360 version I played, shooting an enemy driving a vehicle would result in that enemy suddenly popping up next to the car (in mid air) and then dying. A number of other things kept me from fully enjoying this title: - the enemies don't seem to be very smart at all, and have a very unfair accuracy considering it takes the player some amount of time to figure out where shots are coming form due to the vegetation being all around. - the game is very repetitive - the open world is largely empty and thus you spend the majority of your time driving. - constantly getting chased by enemies get old really really fast - cars crap out on you fast, so you'll either have to fix them every three minutes (because of all the enemy encounters) or walk (which sucks balls) - The mortar didn't seem to do anything (this could be my fault rather than the game's) - the game promises features which aren't present, for instance in the weapon shop it says that the flare gun can be used to call backup, but I've yet to see this in action. I haven't played this game for a few weeks now, so this is the stuff that's off the top of my head. I'd say rent rather than buy, unless you're really into it. It's certainly not the next generation of shooters, and IMO doesn't deserve the high scores it seems to be getting. All in all just an ok title. Expand

I'm not sure what people were expecting here, but this game is definitely the most underrated game I've seen yet this generation. A first for console FPSes: an open-world game the likes of Oblivion with unbelievable graphics and attention to detail. The lighting, the textures, the foliage, the water effects, fire effects, physics, everything, feels and looks so real it can't be described in words. The A.I. is really good too and will flank you, stumble after being shot, limp away, even act dead and hide behind things and wait for you to forget about them then come after you. The shooting gets good after you upgrade your weapons as does your stealth and just about everything else you can do once you upgrade them. That's one thing most reviewers forgot to talk about: you upgrade in this game much like an RPG, just lighter instead of RPG heavy like Fallout 3 letting the gunplay do the talking. The game plays out much like a Mercenaries or Morrowind game, but in first peron view with guns and many vehicles of which you can also upgrade yourself to be able to fix once they're shot up. The multiplayer plays like a standard FPS but with an incentive: you can make your own maps from scratch. You get to use the exact same tools as the developers used to create the gameworld and make your own maps. If you're a fan of FPSes and aren't overwhelmed at complete, and I mean complete, freedom, you have to play this. no scratch that, you have to own it. Ubisoft deserves your money for this for all the time, effort and attention to detail put into it so they can make another much sooner than expected. Just don't go in expecting the arcadey and over the top linearity of FPSes like COD4 or Halo. When I say this game gives you complete freedom in a 50km squared environment, I mean it. Only Fallout 3 could top this as best FPS this generation. But it still doesn't have multiplayer or the map maker of Farcry 2. Expand

Somebody said this game was criminally under-rated by the press, on this occasion I think opinion on Far Cry 2 has been a little generous. The game as itself as a amazing technical achievement, where you probably will not see for years an inactive environment looking as good as this. Seriously brilliant by Ubisoft. But it's the gameplay that hasn't altered from FC1 which is the problem. The simple choice between sneaky/all-out warfare is fine, but when both are equally tiring it becomes a chore quickly. And what was a huge mistake was the exclusion of Carver, he was a driving force to plot and gameplay in the previous version. Lastly driving through miles of forest to get to missions is a joke, I can't believe the designers even considered it let-alone do it. The game physics are odd also, as enemies hang in the air then float down when blown up. But a plus is the A.I., you want get a cheap kill on this game. But again if enemy A.I. interact better with their environment that would have keep guys playing. Overall a decent game hugely let-down by some bad decisions by Ubisoft. Expand

Tf and Anthony, you could not be more right. This game is terrible, a ptitful attempt to live up to the brilliance of Far Cry 1. The gameplay is absolutely shit: the stealth/guerilla warfare aspect that made Far Cry one so unbelievably fun to play has been completely removed, instead leaving a mindless 'charge in there and shoot em to bits' style of gameplay, not at all helped by a series of near-braindead two dimensional AI's. The scenery and buildings at first appear to be lucoius and incredibly realistic, up until the point where you realise that there are about four different buildings and locations in the entire game which have been copy/pasted six hundred million times. It amuses me that the devs claim that this game is all about 'realism', well lets see, how realistic is it to have any guns you buy mysteriously appear in evry other gunshop in africa, which by the way are all identical? One of the worst parts of the game is the 'non linearity'. Far Cry 1 nailed non linearity perfectly, it made it a fun and awsome game aspect by letting you choose which way you completed your missions, whether it be by charging in there all guns blazing, taking out the enemies one by one without them noticing, or blowing them to bits with a jeep-mounted rocket launcher. Far Cry 2, however has managed to get COMPLETELY the wrong end of the stick. Instead of letting you choose how you do your missions, it makes them almost completely linear. Their substiute for this is to let you choose which missions you do. Instead of giving a feel of non-linearity, this simply makes it feel like a linear plot that is sepreated into tiny repetitive chunks, puncutated by dreadfuly boring and horribly repetitive driving sections. This idea of getting to choose which missions you do is also completely flawed by the fact that every single mission is exactly the fucking same, but with a slightly different backstory. That's right, if you get this game, your mission variation will range from 'go here and blow up this oil tanker; to 'go here and blow up this generator', and in between missions you will have to spend nearly twenty minutes driving there and back, being pursued by an unending amount of jeeps, which for some reason are all identical and don't require any keys to start. All things considered, I think that the main problem with the game is that it's dull. In Far Cry 1 you tore through a tropical island, fighting off mutants, finidng experimental weapons, destroying underground labratories, wheres in Far Cry 2 you spend your time killing the same uninteresting enemies in the same uninteresting missions in the same uninteresting locations. Ok, so all of this is very realistic, which is supposed to be the main selling point of the game, but what Ubisoft need to realise is one simple fact: Reality is dull. That's why we play videogames. The first thing i would like to state about this game is that it is completely different from Far Cry 1. It carries no similarities whatsoever. Now that that's over with I must agree with the majority of the critics and users that this game has a problem that is found in many other Ubisoft games such as Assassin's Creed & Prince of Persia, it's too dawn repetetive. Ignore the statement on the back of the cover that says FC2 has an immersive storyline. All you do is go and blow $#@* up 'cause some guy or some girl tells you too. If it's not about blowing something up, then it's about shooting someone in the face and then crying as you see that you're about to be annhialated by a horde of trigger-happy Africans who all have Jeeps. That's how almost every mission ends. The plot is incredibly disjointed and poorly written. The gameplay although fun, due to the array of guns you have at your disposal, it still becomes repetitive. What you will be doing most of the time is driving around an empty savannah for 20 mins. then discover a guard outpost and fight them for 15 mins. Now just repeat that wonderful formula 300 times and you have a game! Despite all of this the single player is still fun if only because you can shell outposts with mortars and then watch as everything burns in sight (by the way the fire in this game looks spectacular), or you can go into a ceasefire zone and camp on a building with a sniper rifle and see how long you can survive. The multiplayer in this game is very weak since it only has 4 modes and only one of them is interesting: Uprising. Besides that the stiff aiming controls are not great in multiplayer, even though they were passable in singleplayer. The definite strongpoint of this game and the reason for me giving it an 8 is the map editor. It is absolutely fantastic. Not only can you place whatever items you desire like buildings, trees, boats and even sacks of potatoes but also you can shape the environment in whatever way you want, be it flat or ridiculously mountainous. Just go online and see at some of the maps people created like the Eiffel Tower, or Twin jumbo jets. As a finisher this game is not bad the single player is fun but repetitive, multiplayer sucks especially if you've played CoD 4, and the map editor is awesome and puts other map editors like Halo 3's Forge to shame. Go give this game a rent, you might like it. Expand

This game is the biggest fucking waste of an amazing series idea. A tuned up version of far cry 1 would be better then this pile of shit. The A.I is retarded, the graphics look pretty amazing until you start seeing the same design over and over, trees start too look the same, rocks, cars, buildings. I mean for such a shitty game you would figure they would produce something great in these categories. The controls are appalling, extremely clunky, after playing #1 i found it impossible to accept the fact that they would produce #2 with anything less but they did alot less. The multiplayer was a neat idea though i love the twist they put on team death match can't get enough of the same....NOT! Terrible, farcry did not need multiplayer the first one had it but it was terrible, because they focused on the main game and if every stupid generic pile of shit gaming today didn't need that farcry 2 could have been much more epic, co-op is where its at, if farcry 2 had been co-op i am sure alot of its other countless flaws could have been lessened to a countable amount but no, they took an amazing game and decided too make a few extra dollars off a good name with a bad game! Far Cry 2 is a resounding success - almost perfect (a couple of small flaws stop this from being a 10). Those who want a quick run and gun shooter look elsewhere. Those that want a truly open world where you can go and make your mark in the world - who invest time and patience to take down enemies. This is your game. Game of the year for me thus far.

This was my most-anticipated game for a long time, after being let down repeatedly by overhyped games that didn't stack up. My friends and I have been DYING for a good fps multiplayer, and Far Cry 1 was our favorite game of all time. Well, if you are hoping for the same spark in this one, you will be sadly disapppointed. They bascially took everything that made Far Cry 1 fun, and removed it. Prone? gone. Predator? gone. ATV? gone. Jetski? Gone. Speedboat? gone. Radar or compass on HUD? gone. Ability to see who's speaking? gone. Ability to jump vehicles far distances? gone. Place weapons on maps in editor? gone. Pick up weapons in multiplayer? gone. My favorite mp games at the moment are GTA and COD4, and this is quite literally a far cry from either. I am struggling through the tediousness of single palyer just so I can somewhat get my money's worth at this point. Multiplayer is clunky, awkward, and one-dimensional. Horrible character movement. Heinous multiplayer maps. I couldn not believe Crytek would let us down like this, until I discovered this game wasn't made by them!!! WHAT!? This game was made by Ubisoft, the original makers of FC had nothing to do with it, which explains everything. It doesn't deserve the name Far Cry. Expand

Worth buying for the AMAZING fire alone, nothing beats a molotov cocktail as a precursor to an assault on an enemy outpost, watch the chaos as the fire rapidly spreads from grass to tree to building, to vehicles, explosions, bad guys running, THEN you pile in AK firing, a grenade or two for good measure... Exhilarating brilliance, I love Far CRy 2.

An amazing environment and strong premise, but marred by sluggish control, unwieldy gun play, and a world too large given the modes of transportation and obstacles involved. With games like Call of Duty 4 reaching a pinnacle of perfection when it comes to smooth and responsive control in an FPS, Far Cry's camera and movement feel as though they've been stuck in mud and left to try in the heat of the African sun. This carries over into the actual shooting portions and makes precise aiming tough; this hurts because everyone seems to be superhuman and you'll often waste 2 ammo clips just to take down one militiaman. When you can only carry 3 at the start of the game, it leads to some frustrating situations in the heat of battle. Also, as large as the world is, you'll be traveling from place to place A LOT. Unfortunately, this gets quite boring and especially obnoxious given the guard posts and other obstacles that inevitably get you and your vehicle shot up (and often disabled) before you're even halfway to a destination. While quick-transit bus stations are available, they service only a few destinations and will often still leave you with ground to cover. I found Far Cry 2, overall, to be a disappointment and not worth investing much time with, especially considering the other top quality releases available, including Dead Space, Fallout 3, and the upcoming Call of Duty: World At War. Better than COD4 by far, except in the MP department, which is still kinda shakey (for 360 at least, I haven't played the other versions). Graphics and music are unbelievably beautiful. It's an overall experience. You have to see/hear/feel/play it yourself.

Single player, great. Great graphics, good enough everything else. Multiplayer, not so great. In the multiplayer, character movement is horrible, way too slow and clumsy. No prone. No ability to place weapons in multiplayer maps, or pick them up. No ability to fire two guns in akimbo. The characters move slow as turtles. And they take waayyy too much damage before dying. Not fun. In Far Cry 1 you could alter the amount of health from the match settings. Not this time. Map editor is better than in Far Cry 1, but that doesn't help when the multiplayer itself is this bad. Expand

The map editor is the sole reason why this game should be made GAME OF THE YEAR. You simply, MUST, try it out. Keep it mind that it's pretty complicated, but you can catch on quickly when you realize what kind of freedom you have, the vastness of the environment you're working with, and the fact that you can share these maps you're making with friends and random players online. People get ridiculously competitive about these maps: some people emulate maps from other games (COD for example, and I've heard of people biting Clancy games such as RB6 Vegas...), and although you can get sucked in, just dabbling in this world-in-itself will sweep your heart up and break it because you unfortunately can't LIVE inside of this game. Until VR takes over... next best thing. Expand

This game is very unique and very involved. The controls are cumbersome, but that's because it makes you do a lot of the things you would probably do in real life... figuring out how to get to your objectives, finding where enemies are prior to combat, finding a safe house so you can save the game and take a nap until dark for a stealthy attempt at a mission. You cannot compare it to a game like Halo3 or COD4, it has about as much in common with those games as a game like Oblivion. It feels like a standard shooter, but it also kind of feels like an Africa simulator. It's atmosphere and rad vibe rival that of a good Hollywood movie. It never breaks first person though, and it doesn't need to at all to push the story or show something spectacular, you experience all those things more in this game than just about any other, because it feels much more real. Theres a few tiny things that could be better; car damage doesn't look too good, and enemies taking damage doesn't look perfect. I wish there were some crocodiles in the many rivers, but maybe I'm being silly. Expand

Far cry 2 is a deeply immersive FPS, and is much more ambitious than the two xbox outings before it. Picking up a copy of the game, my initial thought was that the so called 'open-world' would be a lot less than ubisoft made it out to be. I was wrong. Although of course, the open world has it's limitations, the sense of freedom that the game gives you, along with the sense of reward you get from playing it is unparalleled. Unlike the call of duty's and gears of war's before it, far cry 2 isn't rushed; it gives you a choice of tasks and asks you to complete it; simple. It doesn't say how, or even when, so if collecting every hidden diamond in the game before completing the first mission is your thing, go for it. And if a 20 minute stealth run in order to to kill one enemy is your thing, well just do it. This is what makes far cry 2 unique. Not only this, but fighting in far cry 2 is difficult, assuming you have chosen a reasonable difficulty level. Random health packs that magically heal your health on contact do not exist. Instead, the only way to heal yourself is to watch in awe as you inject yourself with a syringe, or painfully snap a broken bone into place. Nor can you camp behind a rock in the hope that you'll be saved from your low health by the AI simply fumbling into your grasp. Here, the enemy will relentlessly hunt you down, sparing no bullets in making your meet your death. In short, far cry 2 strives on realism, and is the first shooter to truly come close to achieving this. And whilst you take out your map in the game world, you can't help noticing how breathtaking the game world is. Through research and complex programming, ubisoft have met the environment of Africa to a tee in this game, and done it in an amazing way. This is why far cry 2 is unique. But the game's immerive campaign isn't the only good thing about it. The multiplayer combat carries from the gameplay across the whole game, and you genuinely do feel as though you are fighting for survival in multiplayer, equally as well as the story mode. Add to this decent maps and a ranking system, you have a very solid multiplayer element to the game. But what really makes the multiplayer shine isn't the gameplay or the ranking system, but the amazing map editor. Versatile doesn't quite do it justice, and the combination of ease of use and depth of possibilities means that im sure some amazing things will come out of the community from it. So far you may think i have been bias, and I probably have. The game does have some issues. For instance, on occasions the AI can slip up, and in this rare case you will be slightly disappointed. As well as this, the voice acting combined with a slightly thin story make the overall narrative slightly disappointing. Along with this is the fac that at first the gameplay is very hard to get used to, and feels quite chunky and slow. (which is what i put some of the worse reviews of the game down to). However, none of these things really take much away from the overall very satisfying and solid experience that is far cry 2. After a few hours the gameplay becomes as seemless as the likes of halo 3 and the poor voice acting is made up for and more by the stunning environment and flow of play. And if i wasn't so rational a person, i would say that far cry 2 may be worth game of the year. Whether this is true or not, far cry 2 is a fresh approach to the FPS genre, and will not disappoint. You've got to be kidding me with these scores. This is a massive dissapointment as far as I am concerned. Sure the game looks great, but enemy AI is purely ridiculous. Enemies do two things, stand in place in plain view and shoot at you, or, run straight at youfull speed. come on. This is a major step back from the clever and natural feel of FarCry One ( among my top favorites of games). Beyond this, the game is a repetitive and un orchestrated series of repeat events...collect a diamond out a of breifcase out in the wilderness(why???) followed by take over a checkpoint 52 of ') from 2 lame guards and a jeep with a machine gun on it.( repeat, repeat, repeat.) no thanks. I've lost interest after 2 days....maybe 4-5 hours of gameplay. Expand

Let me sum up this game for you: Get a mission (choose from up to 4 variations!), spend 25 minutes driving (with one of the most boring driving sequences in any game), shoot the same people the same way for 5 minutes (YOU WANT STEALTH?! FUCK YOU. RUN AND GUN FAGGOT), spend another 25 minutes driving back, rinse and repeat. Oh and don't forget the LOL FIRE gimmick. This one game pretty much cemented in my mind the fact that high acclaim reviewers accept large bags of money from publishers. As is the case with Ubisoft and any reviewer that gave this game above 60%. I wanted to stay naive and believe that all reviewers had sense and some degree of taste, but Far Cry 2 reviews ruined that for me. tl;dr Please, do not buy this game. There are so many better options than this shit. Not even Steam's CRAZY $10 sale price (a few days ago) should be enough to persuade you to actually purchase this. Don't tolerate this kind of half-assry. If you absolutely have to play this, pirate it. Then again, it's not even worth the bandwith so don't. Anyone who praises this game doesn't know what a good game is. One of the most overrated games of the last five years. For a more in depth review check Rowan's comment. Expand

Like I said another beautiful game wtih no game....it basically didn't allow me to play the game...that might sound strange, but compare it to Fallout3. Fallout3 releases the player out into the wild and you'r e on your own, what a great feeling! While Farcry is so restrictive for an open world game...I gave up looking for diamond briefcases after finding the 3rd one or not being able to driver around into the red zone, come on...Farcry1 was a much better tuned game as well...to bad. This game has promise and looks like an 8 or 9 when you first start playing it but after the first 4 or 5 mission everything is the same with no range of mission. It is either go to a place and steal something, kill someone or blow something up. Not only does this get very boring easily there are also checkpoints filled with enemies every 5 minutes. There is no joy in killing them because they will be back the next time you pass. The only thing that saves this game from being a 2 or 3 is the map editor and some of the truly tremendous maps made available for all to play online. For instance some has built an entire plane floating in the air for players to battle on, another person had built a map which has four dimensions and some of the creations are truly inspiring. There are limits to the number of vehicles and explosives you are allowed to use but apart from that you can make endless creations Expand

I got this cheap this week for 9 quid, severely disappointed. The only thing it's got going for it is the environment/graphics, everything else is totally flawed. the mission structure just grates, its a case of wondering round through the jungle to get to the mission, fair enough if the wondering didn't last the best part of 15 minutes. along the way you encounter swathes of guys with guns and in jeeps. this makes driving virtually impossible as you get 100m down the road and get ambushed by another gang of non-descript enemies. this would almost be tolerable if 1. your gun didnt jam every few minutes leaving you to be mullered and killed, 2. the stupid malaria gimmick didnt kick in making it impossible to focus for a few seconds and 3. the driving controls were actually any good. they aren't they are absoloutley dire. so you get killed and you'd think you'd be respawned in a reasonable place right? wrong. you have to restart from the last save point and hence go through the rigmorall of chancing it past the same baddies which endlessly respawn in the same places. the mission structure itself is also boring as hell, it's kill these guys or blow up that truck or collect this item. THAT'S IT! all in all this game is severely flawed in so many ways it is totally unplayable. how anyone could stick with it enough to completion is beyond me. it's not even worth a fiver second hand, seriously save your blood pressure and never play this. God knows how it averaged 85% on metacritic, I'd rate this at 30% at best. sure it's pretty and technically an acheivement, but where's the fun? GAMES ARE MEANT TO BE FUN, that's why we play them! This game is absolutely amazing. It looks gorgeous and its a joy to play. The only problem is that it takes a while to get into - that's why some people have given it low scores, but don;t let the fact that they can;t handle its difficulty put you off. If you persevere, it opens up into the best FPS this year - take a few hours to unlock some decent weapons and a few save points before you start doing the story and you won't regret it. The game is not perfect, but in a short and simple description the game brings some small new features to the title and fps's in general but it lacks any stand out features the map maker for multiplayer will leave almost anyone breathless because of how great it is, but the multiplayer is a little bad because of connection problems and unbalanced weapons. If you are a gamer who likes single player more then multiplayer then this is a must buy but if you are a multiplayer only guy then this is a 50/50 chance the game is only worth buying if you are going for the single player Expand

This game is amazing don't listen to the reviewers. This game will give you more playtime for your cash than any other game this year. I am not done the single player yet but from what I have heard it takes along time to complete and there is plaenty of insentive to play through it again thanks to branching missions that actualy have an affect on later missions. The graphics are simply the best. They are better then shooters like Call of duty 4 that run on a predetermined path. Speaking of which this game crushes Call of duty 4 in absolutely every category. The multiplayer is amazing too. there are six different classes and 14 different maps with 4 game mode to play on them. the game modes are deathmatch, team deathmatch, Capture the diamond and uprising.Playing ranked is awsome but the map creator is the real deal. You can create maps from scratch and then play on them and rate them. the gameplay is amazing too its very realisatic. Depending on which one of the 4 difficulty settings you choose you may or may not have an aiming reticule. I would recommend hardcore bacause you don't have the aiming reticule which prevents running and gunning. In multiplayer there is no reticule which is definatley a bonus. overall with this game your going to get your moneys worth and then some. Don't listen to the reviewers, they are just mad because this game doesn't have any sci-fi elements to it. I think its idiotic that the matascore for this game is only 85. This game is the anti- call of duty in that you have complete tactical freedom rather than being shoved through a shoot with only one way to complete the game. Do yourself a favour and go buy this game, you will not be able to spend your money better on any other game this year or any year. Expand

I would love to give this game a lower score..... because of the controls and fickleness of the gameplay (no cover? really?) but .... as someone who just got back from Africa I CANNOT DENY HOW WELL THIS CAPTURES THE CONTINENT! Even the way the car feels when driving on a dirt road is how things feel over there, the shading, the sounds, the buildings everything! Absolutely amazing, it reminds me of Nigeria and Cameroon so much, so I have to rate this game high because I have never, never felt something take me to a place so much, I don't even know how they did it. Really don't like the control scheme. Coming from COD4, it has similar button placement, but the camera control is really stodgy and slow. It feels very unnatural and heavy. Gameplay...I dunno. It's open world, so you'll spend most of your time driving around from one point to the other. Multiplayer is just okay, but suffers from the same slowness in the controls and just isn't all that fun. Meh. Expand

This game is clearly not for those suffering from short attention spans (or game reviewers struggling to meet deadline and confronted with an FPS that demands more time than many RPGs. No wonder they are annoyed by all the travel time.) Give it a chance though, and you'll be rewarded. Hopefully you have surround sound and a big TV because this game is suffused with an amazing atmosphere. Just driving down some remote jungle road at night with the subtle rumble and creak of the beat up car and the night sounds of the jungle out your open window was enough to sell me on Far Cry 2. The infamous guard posts each require their own strategy, whether by stealthily avoiding or an all-out assault. This game is for people who thrive on casing their targets and careful planning before attacking. I just hope this game reaches its intended audience. It's not designed for mass appeal nor should it be, but I wouldn't say it's only for the hardcore either. It's a highly original shooter that doesn't cater to the lowest common denominator. Expand

Criminally underrated by the press! I am a big FPS fan, and this is unlike anything ive ever seen before. It mixes the crisp graphics, realistic shooting, and atmosphere of the original Far Cry with a GIGANTIC open world filled with unique environments and armies of angry, heavily armed militamen. The shooting is smooth and fine tuned, realistic and LOUD. The HUD is beautifully, minimally done, immersing you in the action completely. Thank you Ubisoft! Simply superb. I was going to rate this 9/10 but then i thought about it some more, and the thing is, i haven't even checked out the multiplayer or map editor yet. That is how engaging the single player story is. I just passed the 20 hour mark and it's just so damn hard to stop playing this. I had impossible expectations on FC2 after seeing the preview videos but when the reviews started coming out i was disappointed with the comments about the game's so called "flaws". In fact, with all the big releases coming soon, these reviews very nearly convinced me not to get FC2. Well thank goodness i trusted my own judgement because believe me, if you don't get this game you are missing out on something very special. But if you do want it be prepared to lose your social life for a while. Now i want to discuss some of the issues pointed out in the reviews. I own the game on xbox360 and a few reviews commented that they had experienced a stuttering framerate on this version. THIS IS COMPLETE BS!!! The game runs amazingly well on my console. Granted the graphics appear to have been toned down slightly compared to the PC version but it still looks damn sweet on a big TV. The weapons are fantastic and the sound is brilliant. I really like the wildlife sounds. Grenades make very nice explosions. Don't take too much from the reviewers that gave this game under 9/10. Remember these are the same reviewers who gave GTA4 10/10 and Bioshock 9/10. Enough said on that issue. This is a real game for REAL gamers. Do yourself a favour and please don't deny yourself FC2!!! I was a huge fan of the original Far Cry. And although the graphics and African setting are amazing...the game play went down a notch or 2 in my opinion. It plays more like a GTA style game...which is great if that's what you like....exporling environments and driving around doing nothing....but I'm a let's get to the point kind of gamer. I find the pace of this game tedious. The AI is pretty dumb as well. Having just come off Rainbow Six Vegas 2...the difference between the game play is stunning. As a first person shooter, RSV2 is far superior. If you have a lot of time to kill buy it. I'm 15% through it, and I probably won't bother to finish this one. Expand

Just another game that, amidst the hype-machines demands for realism and gimmicky gameplay elements, has completely lost sight of the fact that games are meant to be fun. It takes a very warped perspective to think that people will find having to take virtual malaria medication every 35 minutes, for example. Don't waste your time or money on this cynical rubbish.

First of all, this game sucks. Who ever said it is better than CoD:4 is unbelievably stupid. The only reason why this game gets a 3 rather than a 0 is because the graphics are damn nice, and some of the best I have seen. The map is also hugely big. But the enemy AI is stupid, 12 bullets to kill 1 guy is retarded and the missions are very repetitive. Not to mention you have to drive for 20 minutes to do each mission, BORING! They are one of the leading developers in the industry and they wouldn't even think about releasing a finished product unless they were possitive that it would be recieved well by the masses. Now having said that, I think Far Cry 2 isn't truly deservable to carry on the Far Cry name in many aspects BUT it's still a wonderfully crafted fps and should have a home in any fps fans collection. The essence of Far Cry 2 is in no way distilled from the original game, Im unsure if its the political message they are attempting to get across or that someone decided that killing the same 3-4 guys over and over again is a great idea. The missions as listed below are stale and repetitive, none of them stand out as being unique imaginative or able to carry interest. The overall story is not impressive and fails to inspire me to continue playing to 'find out what happens'. The driving in this game is TEDIOUS no jumps, no tricks, no radio, this wouldnt be so bad except you are going to be doing an awful lot of it. Id rate this game a 3 except i hear it has great player made content, it is technically proficient but has lost its soul, and lost touch for what is fun and exciting and decide to follow a path of drudgery and tedium. Far Cry 2 is a mixed game; the graphics and setting are superb, no other game set in Africa has done it quite as well as this. But the gameplay and story are tame. You'll get 20 hours out of it, but with a disappointing finale and nothing really noteworthy along the way, there's not much to go back and do again. The fire effects are very fun to play with and the realistic conditions of your weapons (some can even break up in your hands) and the gory sequences where you have to pull a bullet out of your leg with pliers are great and unlike anything I've seen before. The online multi-player is alright but nothing special. Overall, I had fun driving around this open world, but when it came to the actual story and gameplay, I was often lost. 2/5, not bad. Expand

Far Cry 2 is an ok FPS which is technologically brilliant, but has the fun sucked out of it due to a number of problems. This (from what I've heard) seems to have nothing in common with the original Far Cry, or even the Xbox/Xbox 360 game, Far Cry Instincts. It just shares the same name with the original game. Anyway, Far Cry 2 drops you in to an African-like sandbox landscape, which is huge by the way, to kill an arms dealer known as "the Jackal". Instead of playing as Jack Carver (from Far Cry and Instincts), you pick 12 different characters, each with their own back story but they all have one thing in common: they all have malaria! The graphics are lovely with beautiful landscapes to admire with lush grass (which blows with the wind depending if it's windy or not) and organic plant life. At its heart, Far Cry 2 is an open world FPS with a meaty single player campaign and you're not constrained into completing missions in a linear fashion; you have freedom to do what you want like complete side missions, scavenge for diamonds and upgrade your arsenal of weapons. The huge range of weapons is impressive from the traditional FPS assault rifles and pistols to a portable mortar that you can use to rain death on your enemies. As you rescue people around the landscape as part as normal progression, they will become your buddy to help you by helping you when your pinned down by enemy fire or offer you an alternative mission to the one that you're going on at the time. To help you transverse the huge African environment, you have a bunch of vehicles to choose from like boats, jeeps and buggies. They are nippy to drive although the engine noises of some of the vehicles are dull. When the action gets going, the game is a joy to play with frantic gun fights and encounters with the enemy. You can even use stealth tactics to eliminate your enemy although the branch whip and claymore mine tactics that you can use to silently kill the enemy from Far Cry Instincts are gone. The guys you fight can soak up a few bullets so to conserve ammo, you gotta nail those headshots. What is really good about this game is the physics. Far Cry 2 is built on Ubisoft's Dunia engine and this allows you to shoot individual branches off a tree. The animations that play when you're trying to fix yourself because you're nearly dead by pulling a bullet out of your flesh or twisting your leg back because of a huge fall is pleasing to watch. The way fire spreads is so realistic: A small fire can soon turn into a huge problem! The grass and the bushes blows (when it's windy) convincingly with the wind. It may seem a really good action packed FPS but there are a few problems that dampen the experience. The game can get incredibly boring while you travel across huge distances just to get to your destination/start of a mission and you'll just be begging for something to happen. There are a few ways to travel to your destination like using a bus stop to warp large distances or drive there but if you lose your vehicle when you're nowhere near a bus stop or your destination, you face walking for a long time. The save system is flawed. You can only save your game manually at any of the safe houses scattered around the gaming environment. There may be an abundance of them but you'll find yourself saving at everyone you'l come across on your way to a destination because if you die, you'll spawn at a safe house you've recently saved at. Dying is imminent while walking towards your destination because an enemy vehicle can suddenly run you over or trying to attack an enemy owned camp and then getting killed because you have run out of syringes and you face going back a long way from your destination if you don't save regularly. Why can't the game have an auto save feature? The jamming gun feature is a nice touch - basically the more you use a specific gun, the more worn out it will become and will be more prone to jamming - but can be tedious when you're in the middle of a gun fight and you'll have to constantly un-jam your gun. Basically to solve this problem, you have to continuously swap out your old weapons for new ones. Also, why do you have to play as a character that has malaria? What happened with the bad ass feral abilities from Far Cry Instincts which made you a powerful force? Now you are a weak character that can't run 50 yards without tiring out. You have to keep on top of your sickness by taking malaria tablets that have to be earned by going on side quests. It's just an unnecessarily distraction from the main game. Going on missions for the weapons vender to unlock new weapons proves pointless considering the weapons unlock through normal story progression. There isn't much mission variety: just kill this guy, collect this document and return it, turn this knob and that etc. Far Cry 2 is a good FPS in general but I feel it's a big step down in storyline and game play from Far Cry Instincts Expand

First, let's start with the bad. Everywhere I seem to drive, I am constantly forced to stop and kill enemies that are positioned everywhere on the map. It makes no sense that after I kill some **** at a station, then return five minutes later, I am confronted with them again. Also, the voice acting is rushed as if they don't want you to get a word in when they are talking. Either that or they have an extreme fear of interruption. I am again confused as to why there is not a set of story missions that can be followed straight through the game instead of having to do constant side missions which confuse the player. But some positives. The graphics are sublime and the first person mode makes the game seem so realistic. The driving is fantastic fun and the map creation is superb. I wasted away many hours creating levels and playing others. Well done but just iron out some of the creases that make this game a nine, instead of a ten. Expand

Despite enjoying a number of sequences, and having a good few hours with it initially, it didn't take long for the veneer to wear off exposing the horrendus design decisions that completely trash the experience. The graphics are beautiful, but that alone can't compensate all the flaws this game has. The missions are boring and repetitive, you'll spend an awful lot of time driving around to reach your goal which is also boring. While driving around you'll also encounter scout posts where you'll be attacked, and the worst is that the enemies respawn there every mission, which makes for a frustrating experience. The AI is horrible. they don't take cover or try to flank, the only thing they do is walk straight towards you while shooting at you. The stealth mechanic is broken as once an enemy catches a glance of you all enemies will immediately know the EXACT spot where you are and will continue to follow you around until either you or they are dead. The story is dull and virtually non-existant. The characters are all one-dimensional and the voice acting is atrocious; all characters talk extremely fast and sound emotionless. Don't believe the hype and stay away from this game, it truly was a chore to play. Expand

Now this is one of the most original and greatest shooters out there, by far. Though, like most games, it may have it's (very few) flaws; Far Cry 2 is an incredible adventure none the less. Hard core shooter fans are sure to get a kick out of this one. The whole campaign experience makes it worth just about any price you can get it for.

An amazing game, stunning visuals, vast map to explore and a brilliant story. Quite realistic in its gameplay and very engrossing. However, online is poor and seems quite hashed compared to the extensive story. I would have rated this game higher had it not been for the crippling bug of the game freezing at the same point half way through the story, which seemingly hundreds of people experienced after research. Nowadays that bug has been fixed, but not forgotten Expand

Many people may dislike this game because the missions are very repetitive. But the game is visually impressive, the soundtrack and graphics make you feel like you're actually there in Africa. To properly enjoy this game, you have to play on a difficulty that's challenging for you, otherwise it's just boring. The online is nothing special whatsoever, with a ton of lag and a few issues with unlocks not saving. The maps are terrible too. What makes Far Cry 2 special is the solitary experience of the incredibly beautiful open-wrold action. No, the map isn't varied, and nor are the missions. But what makes it great is the seemless blend between gameplay, graphics and sound. No other game makes you feel more alive, more into it; more real- than Far Cry 2. It's the ambience that makes this game. The only problem is that hardest difficulty (Infamous) is near impossible, since you die in 2 shots from a standard M249 turret, but Hardcore is verging on just a little too easy. It's the environment, realistic graphics, gameplay and gunplay that define the experience of this game. It may not play like the original Far Cry, but it sure as hell is as intense, if not better. A good game that could be a masterpiece. But it didn't. One of the things I hated is that half of the game is just driving. Driving, driving and guess what...driving. The maps are huge and you can explore them just to collect diamonds in order to buy guns.

  1. In order to truly appreciate it, you'll have to look past all the monotonous traveling and the repetitive missions and get sucked in to the immersive world that Ubisoft Montreal has created.
  2. Far Cry 2 is this year's equivalent of Assassin's Creed... when it comes to enveloping the player in exotic sights and sounds, Ubisoft has absolutely nailed it. [Issue # 40]
  3. A challenging and technically impresive FPS set in gorgeous but treacherous surroundings...It's one of the most engaging shooters we've played for ages. [Dec 2008, p.67]
