The game draws its inspiration from traditional Mexican culture and folklore, and features many interesting and unique characters. Guacamelee builds upon the classic open-world Metroid-vania style of games, by adding a strong melee combat component, a new dimension switching mechanic, and cooperative same-screen multiplayer for the entire story. The game also blurs the boundaries between combat and platforming by making many of the moves useful and necessary for both of these. Expand

  1. Though its more advanced controls can frustrate, this is a bold brawler that just wants to have fun. Just don't play when hungry - you'll be craving an enchilada before the first act is through.

I held off for like 6 months getting this. Then the STCE version came out on my PS4 this month, and I just HAD to see what everyone was raving over. And it turns out, they were completely right.

Just by watching video's of this game, you'd think it was just some cheap platformer. But it's far more than that. The graphics are beautiful when viewed on the big screen and remind me of the game "Transistor" with hand drawn style art and awesome lighting effects. You can also choose whether your in the world of the living or the world of the dead, and the setting changes visually each time you switch, which looks pretty cool.

The fighting in this game is also top notch and is NOT just button mashing. They have numberous combos you try to perform while taking down foes. And they are satisfying to pull off too.

Another thing that keeps you playing is the upgrades, you upgrade all of your different abilities as you go through the game and score coins. There is also different outfits you can use where they give you positives in some areas but negatives in others.

Another great part of this game that some people underestimate, is it's hard core platforming. I mean, it really takes some good skill to reach some places on the map(The map is HUGE, lot's of exploring to do). And you only get skills like double jumping a little later in the game, before the halfway point though. So you WILL have to back track other areas of the map to find all your upgrades. It's a bit like Strider or Metroid.

Basically, I like this game for 3 main reasons, the fighting is awesome, the platforming is awesome, and it's just as good looking as Rayman Origins with that hand drawn style asthetic.

Oh and the story is pretty awesome too.

I'm desperately looking for stuff to play on my PS4 right now, and thankfully, I found this(And I found PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate). I have to give it a 10/10.
