A new and highly virulent strain of the rabies virus emerges and spreads through the human population with frightening speed. The pandemic's victims become grotesquely disfigured, wildly violent psychopaths, attacking the uninfected on sight. One of the "lucky" few apparently immune to the sickness, you, unfortunately, are also trapped in a city crawling with thousands of the bloodthirsty Infacted. Together with a handful of fellow Survivors, you must fight your way to safety or die alone. A co-operative multiplayer action game from the makers of "Counter-Strike," Left 4 Dead is built atop the most advanced version of the Source Engine and introduces version 2 of Turtle Rock's artificial intelligence (A.I.) technology. Fast zombies? Check. Non-stop tension and intensity? Check. The quality of gameplay we expect from Valve? Check. When it comes to co-op multiplayer, Valve is consistently ahead of the curve and excellent at making games that force players to work together.
  2. Left 4 Dead's simplicity offers purity of gameplay - the same reason that gamers keep returning to classic arcade games. Come to think of it, with a handful of levels and unpredictable events happening within them, Left 4 Dead has more in common with "Ms. Pac-Man" than just the eating. It's the same thing over and over - but when simple ingredients are perfectly prepared, what could be a mere snack becomes a feast. This one just happens to be on human flesh. [Holiday 2008, p.32]

One of the finest zombie games ever made, and one of the finest co-op games ever made. The potential for everything to go so, so wrong without warning, or conversely to pull off the most spectacular escapes against all odds, means this is an online shooter you can tell your finest anecdotes about without boring everyone else to tears.
  4. All in all, Left 4 Dead is an amazing game, and I highly recommend it, but only if you are able to play online.
  5. When playing with friends, Left4Dead gives the best cooperative experience in gaming, hands down. Nothing compares. The game is lacking a bit in terms of content, and more weapons and locations would definitely add to the experience, but nothing can take away from the sheer enjoyment value. Valveā€™s newest might be one of their most masterfully crafted, and the attention to detail is impeccable.
  6. Between the tense campaign and the frenetic Versus mode, Left 4 Dead offers two distinct flavors of multiplayer action that are equally delicious when enjoyed with friends. The single-player experience (and the marginally better but somewhat sluggish split-screen mode) isn't as tasty, simply because the friendly AI can't compare to a human teammate.
  7. Yes, shooting hordes of zombies is fun, even more so with three other friends. But the game doesn't have anything to offer beyond that simple activity, and it most likely stop being relevant the moment someone makes a zombie FPS with a little more depth.

This game is just amazing, though it is pretty much that same 7 scenes you're playing over and over, the randomness setting of a.i.'s and such make it like a brand new match every time. Versus, Campaign, and other modes other than Single Player are a great way to keep my attention to the game getting to play with other. The game is just amazing, i play it like everyday and i can't imagine not playing this gem.

I'm not sure how the 360 version plays, but I do know that I far prefer my PC as far as shooters go, so theres that. Also, Valve has already said that they will be releasing DLC for this game, including new campaigns, so no worries that even those will get old.
As far as knowing the "traps"? You can't know them. The Director, Valve's awesome piece of AI is analyzing your play style in real time. It helps you or harms you depending on how well you're doing, and the attacks will never come from the same place twice.
This is genius, as far as I'm concerned. And the strength is definitely in the co-op play. If you don't have access to online play, maybe that's your problem. Never before have I seen a game where the players are so well coordinated, and I was playing in a game where only one other player had a mic. You'd never see that in TF2. We worked together, and we won.
Final summation: This game is brilliant.

Giant Bomb should be ashamed for giving this an 80, and Mortal Kombat vs. DC a 100. Left 4 Dead is simple, but it certainly doesn't Giant Bomb should be ashamed for giving this an 80, and Mortal Kombat vs. DC a 100. Left 4 Dead is simple, but it certainly doesn't deserve anything that's just in the 8 range and below for ratings. It has it's flaws and a little lack of depth, but it's an amazing experience, with one of the best and most interesting online modes and team-based gameplay I've seen. Expand

Turn off the lights and whack up the volume and get sucked into the intense adrenaline rush that is Left 4 Dead. Unlike most multiplayer Turn off the lights and whack up the volume and get sucked into the intense adrenaline rush that is Left 4 Dead. Unlike most multiplayer games, this game really forces you to work as a team. Run ahead on your own and you run the risk off getting pounced, puked or punched without anyone to save you. One element that I really like was the that if you were playing online and needed to go off mid-game you just needed to switch to 'on a break' and the games A.I takes over which is more than competent, especially at saving and healing you. The only real downside I would say is the graphics which do look a little last-gen but it never retracts from the overall experience. Overall, if you connected to the net and want a intense experience that you'd be hard pushed to find anywhere else. Get this game. Expand

Left 4 Dead, the game i've been wondering about for a long time. Always been a big fan of zombies....loved Night of the Living Dead,Left 4 Dead, the game i've been wondering about for a long time. Always been a big fan of zombies....loved Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later, and even Shaun of the Dead was great....so this seems right up my alley. First of all....its fun, fast, and intensely entertaining...but its not perfect. Graphically, when compared to the likes of Far Cry 2, Resistance 2, CoD5 World at War, and Gears of War 2....Left 4 Dead falls very flat, sporting graphics you would expect to have seen 2 years ago. The game runs smooth enough....even when things are tense and there are seemingly hundreds of zombies on screen, but the bland textures in the backgrounds, often repeated zombie character models, and no frills design/style give it a very vanilla LOOK. Sound is excellent, whether it be the tense chatter amongst the characters, the screeching and howling of zombies running full sprint, or the lumbering sound of a "HULK"-like zombie crashing through....the sound keeps you on your tense and keeps your pulse-rate up. Gameplay consist of a straight-forward from point A to point B style, which isn't bad....but a little more open-endedness would have been more favorable and while there is a decent amount of ground to cover and the game rarely ever lets you sit in one spot too long....a larger world would have been nice even if it seems unnecessary. This game moves FAST...you character is seemingly running at full sprint at ALL TIMES and for a good reason....the zombies in this, when made aware of your presense, will stop at nothing to get to you....smashing through doors with their fist....spilling out of door-ways 10 to 20 at a time, just booking it at you....yes, this is a shoot/reload, shoot/reload, shoot/reload type a game where your objective is to survive the trip to your destination....its a bloody good time, and with friends....its priceless. Overall, im pleased with Left 4 Dead....this game SCREAMS multi-player over Live and that for sure will be its biggest redeeming factor because single player WILL get old rather quickly. If there is ever a game thats needs constant downloadable content....its this one, they should keep releasing new levels and scenarios for this game and i can assure you....it will be around for some time. While this dosen't earn my "HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION".....it IS RECOMMENDED.....mainly for the online-playing crowd. Expand

Too much violence, too much gore. I don't think the average household parent would want their child playing this terrible game. I know Too much violence, too much gore.
