Well, every game has it's detractors,but seriously? "Oh noes, they dun stole my RPG elements! It is awl dumb-down and stoopid now!" blissfully forgetting through their misty-eyed watercolour memories that Mass Effect could be muscled through with sheer gaming skill and an unleveled Shepard. Being able to be beaten by skill alone, an RPG does not make. The inventory was awful, it turned the whole game into a puzzle of managing your inventory. I'm glad to see it gone. To finish up, the romance options are much improved, instead of humans only or a 106-year old archeologist.… Expand

Loved the first game, don't know what happen in this one. Feels that they didn't feel good with the game the first time and threw everything away. Is a complete different setting, instead of the council now it has a corporate sponsor. Horrible plots with lots of holes. The last one was sci-fi, this is like gossip girl on space. Arrrgh! I can't believe I wasted 60 bucks in this. Not buying the next one for sure. And they can buy all the reviews they want. In the end, they know who are the real fans. A joy to play! Improving on ME1 in every way-from the conversations, to the leveling up system, to exploring the galaxy. The wonderful scripting come to be expected from Bioware is still present, but with superb references to ME1, which will make players of the previous game smile. All in all, a beautifully crafted game, that leaves us all wondering the answer to this question-how long until Mass Effect 3?… Expand

It dazzles, sparkles and emotes the senses. The combat is dazzling, from the biotic powers and squad commands to the shooting itself. The exploration and world is what the first game promised, it feels like you are exploring the universe. The music continues on from the first game with an elegent mix of 80's syn and modern day bombastic. The graphics and frame rate are both clean and crisp and skily smooth respectfully. But despite all these improvements, its the story and the way the game moved me till the very end is why this game is a once in a generation experience.… Expand

From within the first few minutes of booting up the game, it is apparent how much work went into this game. Incredible visuals, NO graphical "texture loads", fast-paced combat that provides more versatility than you usually know what to do with, and a storyline that makes 90% of any other Xbox 360 (or PS3 for that matter) pale in comparison. Mix in a deep customization option, and events that carry over from the first game into the second, and you get on epic adventure that you will want to experience again and again and again. 4 play-thrus were needed on Mass Effect 1 for me. With Mass Effect 2, even 6 probably wont be enough. Epic gameplay. Tightly polished graphics, audio and storytelling. Engaging characters and memorable events. 10/10, without a doubt.… Expand

It's sad that they removed the elevators and replaced them with generic boring loading screens. Also, I thought that going from "RPG" to "RPG-lite" really hurt the gameplay for me. I liked having more options for armor, weapons, skills, etc. The whole skill/item system felt really really dumbed down compared to the amount of choices and customization we had in Mass Effect 1. No loot=boring. Upgrades didn't really cut it. Also, the story suffers from "middle of the trilogy" syndrome. There's no clearcut single villain, there's too many last second revelations, too many new characters. This is no "Empire Strikes Back" or "Godfather 2". Saren and Sovereign were far more compelling than the Collectors. Still a great game, but inferior to Mass Effect 1 in gameplay AND story.… Expand

This game gets it right. Both Mass Effect 1 and 2 are remarkable, yet they are extremely different. I liked the simplicity the weapon system and how damage was more focused on upgrading your character rather than your weapon. Biotics are also much more fun this time around. I found it to be a good mix of rpg and shooter, just like the first one, just more tilted in the shooter direction this time around. Still takes about 30 hours to complete.… Expand

This game is downright amazing, but it does have it flaws. They totally ripped apart the RPG system and made it not even as in depth as the first game. It is more of a shooter rather than a RPG. I guess to appeal to the masses. And the new weapons system is not as good and many other little flaws that made me mad, but I still enjoy the game. Felt this game was a major disappointment and letdown. While the sound, atmosphere, and dialogue are high water marks, the combat is beyond clunky (especially after having played GoW 2 and Uncharted 2) and the RPG elements are severely reduced from BioWare's other installments. Unlike in prior games, it makes little difference what class you choose or what characters you choose to bring along as almost all abilities are identical to one another. Furthermore, what kind of RPG doesn't even have maps for levels, loot drops from fallen enemies or stats for their weapons? Having greatly enjoyed KOTOR, Jade Empire and NWN I really wanted to like this game and tried for hours, but at the end of the day the lack of RPG features and horrible combat were faults too great to power through.… Expand

The original Mass Effect is considered to be a true RPG/3rd person shooter hybrid. Mass Effect 2 has scaled back most of the RPG elements while keeping the dialog options available and streamlining combat. There are no longer any skill based stats(decryption, first aid, etc) and equipment is very limited. During interviews every Bioware representative bragged and boasted that ME2 was such a vast improvement because combat was so well tuned now. What they dont mention is the neglect of nearly everything that made the game an RPG. Bioware is considered a top-tier developer of only the best games, but to be a great developer you need to be able to improve aspects of your games WITHOUT compromising others. Another aspect that they seemed to always be pushing in everyones face was the ability to port your ME1 character to the sequel. Gamers were led to believe that the decisions made in the first would have a moderate if not profound effect on the second. Unfortunately it only affects maybe 5 minutes of reading text. The plot is in no way affected by any choices you made in ME1. The new Mass Effect shed its RPG-TPS hybrid format to become a TPS with a few RPG inspirations and speech sim. ME was one of my favorite games ever. ME2 is one of the most underwhelming and disappointing games i have played.… Expand

Lack of depth, lack of personality, lack of really everthing that makes a core RPG. Mass Effects 2 is what I call a straight up 3rd person shooter. It was a epic fail for me.

The game was fantastic, and a great blend of action and RPG elements. Even without importin a save game from the first game, I was sucked into this one and thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. Starting a second playthrough, this time with an imported game to see some of the things I missed.

Absolutely amazing game. Better than the first one in every way - and the first one was one of my favorite games of all time. This is a labor of love for every sci-fan out there. And even if you don't like sci-fi, this game is so fast paced, cinematic and well designed you'd be cheating yourself not to at least give it a shot. Thank you Bioware!

I have never personally given a game a 10/10. But this game utterly deserves it. It's not perfect, though. Some would argue "if it's not perfect it's not a 10/10!" I disagree. The Normandy loading times are tedious and kill the immersion in one particular mission. There is not as much armor cust as I thought. But my biggest gripe is that the game ended. Yes, I'm serious. Slight spoiler No game has ever made me feel emotion for the characters. I hated Mordin when I first met him, then I was pissed off when he died in MY playthrough. Thane and Miranda's side quests were INCREDIBLE. I liked EVERYONE on my team, even Garrus and Tali, who I thought were boring and uninteresting in part 1. The combat, the scope, the graphics, the presentation, that's all expected in a great game. But what Mass EFfect has that others do not is the best characters to ever appear in a video game. That's what sets it apart and that's why it's the best game I've ever played. Genius.… Expand

The follow-up to one of the greatest RPG games of all time, could very well be the greatest RPG of all time.

ME2 suffer from the same problem from many sequels. The Devs trying to fix what isn't broken. While they have made some superficial improvements from the original game like better graphics and smoother combat., they removed many fun elements from the first game like exploration and many of the RPG aspects of the game. The story also isn't so good as the first one, the whole game is about collecting squadmates, like pokemon, the mainplot is about 4 missions long. The squadmates which were supose to be the focus of this game were very apathetic on the ship, never leaving their places and each one has only about 4 diferent dialogues. Besides, they have only 4 powers, and you can't change their armors. I hope Bioware reevaluate their priorities in ME3, and bring back all the positive qualities from the first game.… Collapse

You can stick a "W" in front of it but that doesn't make it an RPG. Mass Effect 2 is basically a glorified shooter that rips off elements from Japanese Visual Novels and Dating Sims, which these developers then mock. Mass Effect 2 also consists of some of the worst voice acting in any game ever and his really hard to take seriously due to bad voice actor choices. If this was a JRPG reviewers would be up in arms that, for example, when you leave your ship on a mission you can only take a few people with you, or point out how the plot basically just combines several different sci fi movie plots and is one big cliche. Apparently since it's a western game it's beyond these criticisms. This game is nothing special.… Expand

Mass Effect one was a wonderful game but it did have flaws. Bioware seem to have picked up on every one of those and refined it to the nth degree to create a fantastic experience. Gong is the clunky inventory management, gone is the tearing and odd frame rate dip. In is a vastly improved combat mechanic, the best visuals on 360 (probably) and a simpler more immersive RPG experience. The story is, once again, outstanding. Good as a game, bad as a product. Includes a new consumer screw-over. "DLC" ships with it. Its not really extra content though, its part of the game they just chose to not put in (nothing new there). Its real purpose is to reduce used game sales and make more people buy it retail. Violation of our rights IMO.

Whoa. A lot of 10's here. A lot of 0's. I'm not in the love it or hate it camp. I appreciate what they tried to do. I enjoyed it more than the first one, but less than just about every other game I've played in the past year or so. It just feels outdated. The story is linear, the levels are boring, the combat--while much improved from the first--is a quite boring compared to almost every other TPS or RPG out there. (You always know when a battle is about to break out, because suddenly the room is filled with perfectly shaped things to take cover behind.) The graphics and cinematics are nice but not groundbreaking. The only thing that distinguished Mass Effect was the branching dialogue trees and story consequences, but many games do that now, and most of them do it better. ME-2 is ambitious, but ends up just a slightly above average game. They need to take more combat tips from MW, RPG tips from FF and graphics tips from Uncharted. I doubt I'll play ME-3.… Expand

Hands on the best game I have ever played on any system anywhere. Fantastic story, real emotional involvement unlike any other gaming experience. Loved every second of it. Going back for a second run through, which I have never been compelled to do with ANY game before.

Focusing more on the build up to the finale than it's own story, Mass Effect 2 does some great things with it's cast of characters and their development. Import your Shephard from the first game to enhance your experience and pick your class to play the game a number of different ways. The combat mechanics have been greatly improved on from the first game and it overall seems more polished with less glitches and more fluid controls. With so many different ways to play, you experience something a little different every time, and that in itself speaks volumes. Mass Effect is definitely a game to experience.… Expand

I'll begin this review by saying that I'm primarily a MMO-RPGer (EQ2). I occasionally play console shooters and PC RTS games. Even when I'm playing EQ2 though, I largely ignore the story lines behind the quests and the game overall. Having said all of that, I was totally drawn into ME2. The plot line is amazing, and I totally enjoyed the interactions with the other characters. My advice is to save often before interactions so that you can go back and play them another way. Combat is challenging enough without being frustrating (on "normal) for someone who is only an occasional console gamer. Hardcore console gamers might find the combat a little too easy but then again I haven't attempted it on the "extreme" setting so I'm guessing. I just finished it last night, and I'm probably going to play it again. It also prompted me to buy the first game. So, this is probably one of the only games I'll ever rate a 10, but ME2 deserves it!… Expand

Unfortunately it doesn't quite live up to the hype. The game design is average, the gameplay is average, the pressentation, is great, but I think we've seen it all before. Ultimately Mass Effect 2 is more cinematic, but it doesn't bring anything new to the table other than that it's a TPS with some worthless decision making.

Mass effect 1 was pretty much a fantastic game and the perfect balance of Rpg and Tps and a superb cast of characters with a great story. You'd expect further improvement on Mass effect 2 however that is simply not the case and instead the series has simply gone backwards by a landslide. The problem is that pretty much all the RPG elements that made the first game great have simply gone thus making this game an all out third person shooter in an obvious attempt to gather the casual gamers attention. Secondly is the Story and Characters which in the first game was simply superb however in this game you simply don't care about the story or the characters and will find yourself trying to skip the long and drawn-out cinematics just to get on with the game. Lastly is the graphics in which yes they do look great however the improvment over the first game is minimal and in some way have actually gotten worse. Overall if your looking for a real blend of Rpg and Tps I reccomend you purchase Mass effect 1 as it is by far the superior game. Obviously with this game greed has gotten the better off Bioware which has lead to the once great series being butchured and stripped off all its best elements which results in a mediocre tps.… Expand

What happened to the RPG? Bioware I'm a little more than disappointed in you. KOTOR was one of my favorite Xbox titles. Mass Effect 1 was one of my favorite Xbox 360 titles. What you've done IMO is stripped out the parts of ME1 that made it fun and individualized and turned it into a linear mundane TPS. This is not an RPG/TPS anymore. It's just an average TPS. It's not a horrible game. It's just not what I had hoped for being a fan of bioware's previous achievements. I will say that it's long cut scenes without firing a shot, the lack of the RPG elements that made ME1 so enjoyable and the sometimes hinky cover system have turned this into a disappointing sequel.… Expand

ME1 was a great game and now this... everything that was great in the first one is destroyed(okay, maybe plot and story telling is still fine). No more fine tuning characters armour, guns etc. And mission handling... nonono! Game feels so much more arcade than before. Sad sad thing.

If I wanted a Gears of War, Choose Your Own Adventure book, I'd go to the library. I wouldn't preorder an action RPG. Everything they've done has completely ruined the whole reason I liked this series. Their waiting until release to make these details public just makes it all that much worse. This might as well have been produced by Activision and IW.

Sadly the game is rather uninspired in design and the characters don't have the depth, personality, or intrigue, that Saren, Sovereign, and Wrex has in the first game. Besides the obvious high production values the game doesn't do anything new. It takes away exploration, makes you probe random planets, and gives you a story that is more predictable. What happened to the amazing story and characters from Mass Effect? I could even forget the most annoying voice actor ever, Shepard, but this game seems to be reeking it with the high scores because it's higher budgeted. The side quests are better, but the characters don't make you want to continue making choice, the choices have more depth actually. The gameplay is solid, but damn the Third Person Shooter genre has become a chore this gen. And the level design is average, along with the AI.… Expand

Bioware has been on a roll with their RPGs. Mass Effect 2 has the story and gameplay to make most gamers nod their heads and say "This is what I play games for". The fact of the matter is, if you don't play this game you are missing out. It's intelligent and action packed. Need I say more?

Probably the best game I have ever played. Everything about it was superb.

I really wanted to give this game a perfect score but this game is not without its problems. First of all lets talk about the positives firstly this game offers you tons of choices throughout the game what your character looks like what you can say, which class you wanna play as and your choices and interactions with your squad will also have a long term effect in the final mission of the game. ME2 also really improves upon the combat from the first game as the combat is no longer hurt by by A.I, aiming and hit detection issues the combat seems much more cliche and well polished compared to the first I also like the weapon and armor upgrade system better than the first game. ME 1 had alot of useless weapons and armor in it where the only difference between them was how many shots they can do before overheating and the amount damage they inflict and absorb having that and the weapon and armor upgrades is basically the same thing. 1's ammo and armor upgrades were just not that useful as you could only install one at a time on a weapon or armor and it did not improve your weapon or armor one bit that being said I am still disappointed because of the lack of variety in armor customization they allow you do to in this game and the fact that you cannot customize the armor of your squad mates is also a let down. The inventory has been completely removed which to me is not that big of an issue because there are not that many weapons in this game and the first one had way to many and when you reached the inventory's 150 item limit in the first game the game shoved it your face to convert stuff to omni-gel by the end of ME 1 I had like 950 omni gel seriously that is beyond ridiculous so I am glad they got rid of that but they could have fixed the inventory system but this game doesn't have that much equipment so in my opinion it did not need it. Also characters in ME2 have a more detailed background and character development unlike ME 1. ME 2 also improves upon the graphics the first game there are far less framerate issues, the character models look more detailed and the animations look much better . And just like the first game ME2 has a stellar soundtrack and amazing and top notch voice acting. However as great of a game ME2 is it is not without its problems firstly they toned down the rpg elements from the first game and made the game more of a shooter than an rpg to appeal to more of the audience however toning down does not mean completely removing some negative reviewers here are simply overreacting they did remove some abilities completely but some of them were just removed from the skill tree and put on the research terminal so basically the things people are complaining about not being in the game are actually in the game just not in the skill tree but in the research terminal people should pay attention to things like that and even though they removed some rpg features completely some of them were just totally useless in ME1. The exp system has also been simplified you gain a level after completing a mission or two which one of my bigger issues with this game ME1's EXP system was much better where you get points for doing just about anything that was not perfect but still better than the EXP system in this game. ME 2 has a better A.I than ME 1 however the the partner A.I still has the tendency to get in your way while shooting and partners and enemies freezing at higher difficulties (Hardcore and Insanity) however in the case of enemies freezing at highher difficulties that is not a bad thing at all it allows you to get a few cheap shots at them. The game's story is still really good if you connect its events to ME1 and go into the background of your enemies and the squad members and the story is also presented as more darker and personal that being said comparing this to ME 1's story ME2's story pales in comparison however its story still serves its purpose and carry forwards the story to the third game. The loading times on the 360 can be a little annoying at times I prefer the elevator rides from Mass Effect over these long and boring loading screens And last problem I have with this game is the probing can get boring and tedious at times and can ruin the enjoyment people can get from this game but I still prefer this over the Mako and its abysmal controls and lack of physics in ME 1. However to enjoy this game 100% you must play ME1 first as even the smallest of choices of ME1 have an effect on the interactions and side quests you do in this game. ME2 is an amazing game which improves upon its prequel in alot of ways while becoming more casual friendly but still retaining most of its original fans if it wasn't for a few flaws in ME2 hurting its overall experience this game would have easily been a 10/10 perfect game. Lets hope Mass Effect 3 gets the honor. 9.5/10.… Expand

I cannot believe the over hype of a game that is COMPLETLEY UNPLAYABLE due too tiny text size. Bioware have said that it is meant for HD TVs, but it does not say that on the box, or in any " perfect score" review I have read. They have also broken the best parts from the original software to sell to you for extra money. Bioware and EA are guilty of disregard for gamers and pure greed in thier last two games, and I implore you not to buy this game as you will be very angry after 10 minutes.… Expand

What I love about the user review section of metacritic is that you don't actually have to know anything about objective criticism. It's really quite brilliant. Just harp on minutiae and your own butt-hurt feelings, regardless of how the game you are reviewing actually rates on the standard areas of critique, such as little things like gameplay, graphics, and originality. (Which Mass Effect 2 has in abundance, by the way.) I find it exceptional that someone could buy and play the first Mass Effect, determine that they hated it, and then buy into hype and purchase the second game thinking that they would suddenly reinvent the series. Why wouldn't they, I mean, they only planned a 3 game trilogy... why stick to a tried and true method for the sake of storytelling cohesion? The first game had its flaws, which have been covered over and over so I'll just leave that for the writers at 1Up to bring up, but, who would think that this game would NOT have any flaws? Of course they can make an absolutely perfect game with no bugs which everyone and their sister will love and which will cater to all preconceived notions and desires! Why couldn't they? Pushing the present limitations on a 6 year old gaming system with an incredibly large playing universe and a user reactionary story-arc simply is no reason to expect anything than utter perfection! The graphics are poor at best and the online is constantly laggy. Overall I was let down by the badly written story and generic characters. This game tries to copy Battleship Earth and does it badly.

Bioware are slipping down the slope, no thanks to EA I suspect. Absolutely HORRIFIED at what Bioware have done with Mass Effect. Fans of the first game stay away. They have taken what could have been THE best RPG world/game series and utterly stripped/dumbed it down to appeal to the masses. This is a 3rd person shooter that would appeal to 10 year olds. Story sucks, characters are disconnected from anything but their own issues, and are expendable. The gameplay is repetative cover/shoot CONSTANTLY.

I wish Bioware hadn't taken so much away, I wish ME 2 was less about shooting robots in the face, but then again its just a game and considering Bioware have really tried to evolve and push forward the franchise I applaud a brilliant game. Ignore any bad reviews, they are worthless and don't make any sense. If you don't like this game it is cause you suck or maybe your mother doesn't love you and your just mad at the world. This game is flawless and always exciting. One of the best games ever! This is by far the best Xbox 360 game yet and has endless amount of possibilities for the third one. Gameplay and gun fights were great and nice graphics helped a lot too. The story is deep, and nothing new seeing how bio-ware has great story telling techniques. I think I am the only one that prefered mass effect 1 better. 8 hours in the game and I don't even want to continue anymore. They took away the inventory system and made it mainstream. I hate the new crosshair and ammo system, and i hate that the whole game is basically just finding new squad mates for one final mission. The new normandy looks nice, but I really don't like this game.

This is a game of improvements over ME1 which was a spectacular gaming accomplishment... Texture Detail, Lighting, Story, Controller Layout, Dialog Trees, Dialog Interaction,, Normandy, Elevator Rides, Side Quests, Exploration, Inventory System, Enemy AI, Squad AI, Targeting, Game HUD, Mid Level Loading,, Level Design, ... the list goes on... To see every gripe or annoyance from the first game tweaked and improved, makes a great game design (ME1) become truly fantastic. If you liked ME1 get ME2... you'll love it. Yes, they made adjustments to Combat (less like KOTOR) and streamlined the RPG aspects (simpler inventory/character management) but the changes only add to the overall gaming experience. Hats off to Bioware! Only halfway through the game and it's living up to everything I hoped it would. Purposely stayed away from reading too much into it prior to release, so being a huge fan of ME1 makes all the surprises and ramifications even more EPIC!

We at Game Informer believe this game blows chunks. Good graphics but they still do not natch up to games like Uncharted 2 or KIllzone 2. The PC version definitely does, but in comparison, the Xbox 360 version is poor. Again, the story really is not that compelling and you will find yourself wondering what is going on if you were lucky enough not to play the first one. GI out.

One of the best and most absorbing game experiences I've had in recent memory. The improvements to presentation and gameplay are stellar, but without making the original title obsolete. The level of engagement with the characters and story is on par with my adolescent obsession with Final Fantasy. This is an RPG for the maturing gamer, and a step forward for the genre. This game just set the gold standard for what an Xbox 360 game should look and play like. The story is intense, regardless of the doldrums in the middle of the game. This is also a great example of what a science fiction epic should feel like, a feeling not felt since your first trip through Star Wars. Yes there were some points where I begged the question "Why?" but for the most part the galaxy is expansive and with my first play through topping 30 hours I was not left feeling like I could have done more. After having just completed the first installment, for the second time, the week before Mass Effect 2's release, I could easily note the numerous references to the first game. The storyline, graphics, and streamlined combat make this game a must-have and, in my humble opinion, the best Xbox 360 game to date. The whole Mass Effect universe has been solidified and expanded upon in this game, and BioWare definitely outdid themselves and have put the Mass Effect franchise on the top of many gamers' lists of favorites. The storyline is capturing, the characters are memorable (and you learn to love them), and all of the characters from the previous game are there albeit unavailable. Mass Effect fans will surely enjoy the game, and new players in the Mass Effect games will find themselves enjoying it anyway. I would, however, encourage people to buy or rent the first game before playing this game. Most RPG fans will love the detail in the storyline of the first game, and it will make Mass Effect 2 an even more enjoyable experience.… Expand

As a veteran gamer and lover of roleplaying games as well as a fan of Mass Effect 1 and of all Bioware games I am ecstatic to say that ME2 does not disappoint. By playing this game, one will immerse themselves in a beautifully crafted universe that takes place in the 23rd century. Bioware has created a fantasy world that is believable and rivals that of J.R.R. Tolkien's middle-earth. No RPG to date can rival ME2. Bioware took every aspect of the first game that players weren't satisfied with and revamped the entire ME game play. No more tedious, redundant world explorations but rather new unique experiences that are discovered by scanning worlds; no more pointless minerals, which are now used for upgrades; no more driving an all-too-boring mako; no more inventory mayhem, where instead there is no traditional inventory; no linear classes but instead class options that will provide a new experience each playthrough. These are just some examples of how ME2 outdoes its predecessor. Most notable though is how ME2 introduces characters in a fashion that is unrivaled by any game in existence today. With ME2, not only do you immerse yourself in a stupendous and fantastical universe but also plunge yourself into the depths of characters you meet in your travels; each character with a unique and realistic personality that encompasses and runs parallel with the ME universe. With such engrossing game play, grandiose storytelling, fantastically crafted universe and realistic NPC/squadmates that everyone can relate to ME2 does not leave much to criticize. But no game comes without criticism, and while ME2 has a poultry amount of criticisms compared to other games, some aspects of the game could be better. Mainly what got me included the minuscule amount of weapons at your disposal. For example, there are 2 assault riffles (one other that I don't count but isn't available to everyone), 2 submachine guns and 2 pistols, and while there are more types of weapons to choose from their are few versions in each category. Another aspect that can be looked down on is the strip of the inventory system to the few weapons and upgrades; in other words, the "loot" aspect of ME1 is not present. Furthermore, the mining of minerals is extremely boring and slow, where these minerals are needed for upgrades. As far as glitches go, ME2 has no more and maybe fewer than any game it might relate to upon release. Despite these very few criticisms that one can make for ME2, they are all irrelevant because of the overflow of entrainment and excitement the game brings to its players. Even if the player has not played ME1, this a game not to pass up on. Rent it, buy it, get all the achievements, import character from ME1, do whatever it is that will enable you to play this hell of a great game.… Expand

Wow, the amount of zeros and under 9's is outstanding... Complaining that there is too much dialogue and not enough shooting; is like buying a book and crying that there is not enough pictures. Just because you are handicap doesnt mean you are right - and your mom needs the internet back.

Mass Effect 2 is simply put a masterpiece. You are guaranteed that you will fall in love with one character. The story is gripping, its a tale of love, passion, family, and drive. The sound quality is amazing, it very clear and detailed. The gameplay has been refined and restructured, there's less pausing, and slowing down the intense pace Mass Effect is known for. The voice is star-studded, and as usual the best part in Mass Effect 1, the personalization has came back with more options. You really feel that you are a part of a character, and part of a bigger movement. In the end, there's nothing negative to say, this game is nothing short of epic.… Expand

It's a rare occasion when a game's sequel improves on everything the original had, and then some, but it happened here in Mass Effect 2. The game went from brilliant to incredible, with the graphics as high end as possible, and facial expressions believable. On top of the graphics, the gameplay has been improved greatly, offering a bigger variety of weapons this time around. Infinite ammo has been removed, but regenerating health is a plus. This game truly is amazing. From the excellent beginning all the way to the credits. The gameplay is 100% tighter than the first Mass Effect and the story is engrossing with no stutter. I am extremely happy with Bioware and I easily see this game winning best game of 2010.

The perfect Sci-Fi experience. Some may say that the game has been dulled down from the original, but I digress. The original Mass Effect may have been deeper in customization options, but ME2 brings a lot more to the table as far as an overall experience. Now before you nail me to the cross and tell me that my opinion is wrong its important to note that this game is good but far from perfect. It has many good improvements from the first one (mostly combat), but the pacing and game play at times are uninteresting, and at times flat out boring. For example: In Mass effect 1, you had the "mako" a vehicle to explore planets. The mako game play was a cut and paste kind of game play which was some what boring. However it make collecting resource bearable since you get to shoot enemies and actually play. But in Mass Effect 2 you do something even more boring and even more cut and paste. You probe and scan planets to gain resources, which is extremely time consuming and uninspiring and flat out boring. Although its optional you won't be able to upgrade anything unless you mine for these resources. Your survival depends on these upgrades, which essentially means that you have to do it whether you like it or not. The other step backwards for Mass effect 2 is the Galaxy navigation. To say that this game has built upon Mass Effect is giving it too little credit. BioWare has taken the near-perfect system used in Mass Effect and honed all of the edges. The combat is better, exploration is less of a pain, and most of all, this game manages to bring out emotions buried deep within you to actually care about the members of your team. Utter drivel. All the RPG elements that made the first ME stand out from all other Shooters are gone. Its been dumb do..err I mean 'streamlined' to a point where it almost feels totally pointless choosing a class & lvling up. No weapon, armour skills, or class restrictions. You dont even get exp for killing enemies. Pathetic. You could literally just set levelling to auto and you wouldnt be missing out on anything. I give it a 10 because it deserves it, in spite of the few issues i have with the game. In comparison with the first, which will be in my type 5 all-time forever, they increased the length and depth, which was my main complaint then. But i was rather disappointed to see weapons and gear in general basically go out the window, that is not really acceptable to me in an rpg. Not to mention you can only level up at the end of a "mission" and killing stuff gives no exp. this time around. They also removed some depth from the skills/level system in general which was also disappointing. In all, it is a monumental game, but I haven't gotten past these changes yet. People complained about the inventory screen in the first(which I had no issue with) and you got what you wanted, thanks. I guess I would have to give a 9.5 if I could.… Expand

Put a lot of effort to get this running on windows through my Macbook Pro, and it was so worth it. It is very rare I can say this, but this is one of my favourite games ever made, up there with Crash Warped, MGS3, Uncharted 2 and perhaps Halo 2 (first main online game of mine).

I was disappointed at first due to the changes from ME1, but after spending sometime with ME2, it's an awesome achievement of storytelling and gameplay. I loved the way ME1 played (in the minority on that) and after sometime, I realized the brilliance of ME2. Bioware really listened to criticisms of the inventory system and side missions in ME1, not only making them better, but they added whole new great systems/features to replace them. Bravo.… Expand

I played the game, and I liked it. It made for a fun 32 Hour experience. At the end 7 hours went by without me noticing, I have a hard time focusing on a thing for long. I have not played the first game, and this intrigued me to check out the first game. Please, if you find the game to be average give it a average vote, IE 4-6. This game is the one of the best story telling games iv played the last one to come up to this standed was Shenmue i can honestly say that i can find any fault thats worth not getting it for the only thing i will say is the loading screens take a long time but thats it really once you get over that little hitch you will feel the inbrace this game will have on you.

Don't listen to all the haters, this is an amazing game that captivates from the start, Its not a lot different from the 1st one but it does not need to be because that game was close enough to perfection anyway. Some little things have been improved though like the covering system, It uses a similar one to Gears Of War. If you haven't played the first game my advise would be to play through it first then play this one as the story is an integral part of the experience, also you can import your saved game from the first title so the decisions you made affect the story of the second game. Fun, rent-worthy 10-hour single player RPG with little to no replay value. Once you beat it, there's no reason to go back to it. Most dialog options result in the same events, and the two lead voice actors become stale even if you choose to try new characters. The mining and exploration games are boring and the controls are a bit clunky overall. Tons of long load times, like the original. Ok it's not a ZERO, that is ridiculous. However, I for one am SICK of seeing every 'massive name game' getting 10/10 from the sheep players and the shilling reviewers. This has happened to almost all the big name games recently (ok.. for years) and I'll keep on giving zero to games that are getting 10s when they are worth '8' at best... on a good day, if you squint really hard. Now to the game. For all the hype and praise I was badly let down. I almost fell asleep during the first few hours play. The initial opening scene was nicely done, very good (if you want 'interactive movies' rather than games), it seemed to go downhill after that. When you compare this to the quality in for ex Uncharted 2, it shows so much lack of flair, lack of care, lack of finishing touches. The textures throughout the levels were bland, reminding me of 'poor man's FPS' from the past such as Chaser and all that crud from the early 2000s. Seriously the design is poor, lacking originality, lacking artistic direction and relying on the age old 'generic space theme'. Design was boxy, levels (so far) linear and poorly paced. It was like bioware tried to hybrid this game a bit too much and have ended up removing anything that was cool about it (the RPG depth) and making, frankly, a 2nd rate Third person shooter with clunky controls, poor interface and worst of all EXTREMELY BORING GAMEPLAY. If you play Gears of War or Uncharted 2... or even Resident Evil 4 on the GC.. THAT is how you do '3rd person' properly. This game and it's predecessor were obviously made by a team who don't truly understand how to make a tight addictive 'action' game, and instead rely on the so called 'depth' and vision of the story and concept. It doesn't wash with me. I honestly can't recall a time in recent years I've been this BORED while playing such a 'massive' game. I'm trading mine in asap while the price is still good (If I can) if not looks like I really should stop taking any review site seriously. Ask yourself, while playing this, are you genuinely feeling 'fun'? are you feeling that there is more to pull you through the game than some lame (though nicely scripted and pretty looking) cut scene? I certainly did not relish getting back to the so called 'action' (wooh more shooting with an underpowered and clunky set of weapons) I guess most of all I was astonished at the number of cliches this game spews over the player while being heralded as the second coming of gaming nirvana. I lost all connection with the game because of it's clinical delivery, it's 'by the numbers' action gameplay, and it's robotic characters. The female is annoying, often repeating her lines once too often during battle (it's 2010 people, I thought that kind of thing had been fixed in games these days?). Of course lots and lots of people are still going to buy this, just like the brainless sheep (even worse) who made Modern Warfare 2 the 'beacon' of a once proud industry. Nothing I say will damage Bioware's sales, or stop you from buying it if you are hyped up for it. For me however, it all felt like it was trying too hard to be 'something' it wasn't, with no clear, punchy definition of it's own. It's borrowed ideas and innovations from other games and mixed it up into something that lacks soul or reason to play (other than because the reviews said you should). Ahh just another game in a long line of stupidly overhyped AAA titles that are keeping the industry rich through collusion and payola with review sites. Next up? I guess we'll have Bioshock 2 being 'the greatest thing ever' according to the mags/sites... Just like they did with the first game (which was also overhyped and had terrible gameplay, as bad as I thought it's gameplay was it was actually ever so slightly more fun than ME2's gameplay so that's how bad ME2 is!). There are good 'hyped' games out there, Uncharted 2 is one of them, not perfect but it's solid, addictive and feels compelling. It's art direction and animation are worlds beyond the basic '1999 style' generic corridor shooter we see here. I know i'm picky, I can't help it... I can't help noticing things in ME2 like the lazy texturing (check out the ramps up to the outside buildings in the first levels, many have misaligned textures with no 'trimming' just stopping dead at the end of the mesh - even if it means the texture is cut in half)... that kind of thing was frowned upon way back in user created maps for games like unreal etc so why are pro devs getting away with this lazy 'mapping' and getting 10/10 for graphics/art? Ok a sum up of the bad points ( I won't list the good stuff as there's thousands of 10/10 reviews doing that if you care). .Linear to the point of boredom (Just 'working your way though cos you bought it not cos you are having a blast') .Generic level design .Bad texturing (sky/clouds even feature stretched and flat 'clouds' again say hello to 1999!) .Tiny/Bad UI - blocky and unintuitive .Abrupt level ending. No finesse, just 'map after map' with some cut scenes tacked on. Again check Uncharted2 for one example of how to do this right with 'flair' .Boring and unsympathetic characters. The complete opposite of the great work done in games like Half Life 2 (and again even U2). .Shine on everything, they like them shaders at bioware and they are using them on everything - some may think that makes for 'great graphics' but it doesn't. It looks stupid, it's still a boxy empty lifeless environment that is no pleasure to be in .Clinical to the point of feeling like numb .Ill defined gameplay - is it one thing or the other? neither, it's a mess in terms of gameplay. .Story? Hmm, probably it's strongest side but again it's nothing special, been done to death, they just changed the name of the 'baddies' ... yawn .Overhyped. When a game is overhyped such as this, it better be damned near perfect. Even with flaws it's ok but this is so lacklustre in so many areas it's a crime against videogaming to be calling this 'the best game of the year' so early. great game let down by major story issues like the geth team member who after spending an entire game trying to wipe them out suddenly is welcomed aboard with open arms, miranda the cerberus devotee complete a mission suddenly shes ready to turn her back on them. this is story telling at its poorest, if it was a movie it would be comical, for a game costing fifty quid its unforgivable, and dont get started on the planets you survey , as you only need to check about half of em to get all the ore you need for the upgrades. a great game as i said ruined by the laziest, stupidest most nonsensical dialogue and story for a long time. we expect more from you bioware, sack your writer… Expand

It's kinda weird to see such high ratings to ME2. Not a bad game by a long shot, but it was SIGNIFICANTLY dumbed down in the sake of streamlining... The game is a thousand times more linear, the characters are much blander, the missions aren't quite exciting, and so on. As for the new mechanisms, the reloading isn't a great improvement over the overheating one in ME1. Now you can't even TOUCH a weapon you're not proficient with. Inventory management, even if a pain, is way better than no inventory AT ALL. Weapon management is no longer relevant, as every member has the same upgraded version (some kind of Cerberus "standard issue" policy, perhaps?). Planet exploring, while buggy, was much more rewarding, interesting and "role-play-y" than the current boring and pointless "flash game" scanning. Bioware should try to reach some level of balance in their simplification attempts, or ME3 will probably be the D&D 4.5 ed, of videogames.… Expand

ME2 is a good shooter and a fun game, for what is is. The problem is that I wanted an RPG, not a shooter. I want depth, a non-linear structure, missions where I don't have to shoot stuff, character development, conversations that have an effect on the world and the characters in it. I want to explore and lose myself in an imaginary world, not just go down corridor after corridor hiding behind conveniently-placed barriers shooting waves of aliens before flicking a switch and getting an end-of-level screen, like a 90s shooter. It is one of them good games, but I think Fable is simply som much better! I went on Metacritic and rated Fable a 10, this doesn't deserve nearly as good. Finding the buttons on the controller is really hard, that's really a lot of ease in Fable. Especially in Fable 2. Mass Effect 2 i close, but not good.

I felt Mass Effect 1 was a great mixture of RPG and action game. Sure it had issue that could be improved upon but it was a good mix Mass effect 2 starts off with a amazing opening cinematic, sets up players motivation and relationship to other characters, and does everything any AAA game should do. But then comes the problems: - The interface is blocky and the constant flood of pop-ups becomes annoying, Each popup fill about 15% of the screen. - The game doesn't pause if your 360 controller looses power. A break of Microsoft's quality rules. - NPC constantly mount scenery and on have a couple of times found myself pushed into blocked off areas that required a restart. - Most RPG elements have been cut down to appeal to a more casual and the FPS audience. - Exploration of world has been replaced with a rotating globe that moors even the most patient of players to death. - At the end of each level you are presented with a end of level summery. This thrown at you abruptly and completely breaks the flow of the game. They have tried so hard to make it a cinematic masterpiece but this one thing is the most out of feature in the game. - The level summery also provides completely useless information. Why do i need to have my experience abruptly stopped to be told about how much platinum i collected? I know this because i got a big sign in-game when i collected it and also its on my profile. - Level layout. Some of the levels feel far more linnier and made for the purpose of being a level. The environments feel like they don't have a real function apart from to challenge the player. For instance roes of walls across walkways. Don't get me wrong - the game has many fantastic moments and is a work of digital art. But it feels like it was made by share holders and not artists or designers. Well... wasn't this game a dissappointment? Others here (of those with the red ratings) have commented on the lack of RPG-elements and boring 3rd person shooter gameplay. I just have one more example of how uninspired the developers must've been: I recently played through the The Ur-Quan Masters. (a port of the classic Star Control 2). An important part of this game is traveling to star systems and collecting resources. "Ah" you say. "That sounds like ME2!". Well, up to a point it is similar. The solar system is laid out in exactly the same way. You see the star, the planets, and their orbits. You move your ships between them to scan them and pick up resources. The thing is, though, that scanning the planets takes a few seconds in SC2, Then you launch a lander and drive around the planet (in 2-D view) shooting nasty aliens, dodging earthquakes, lightning and fire while picking up the resources. This entire process takes about as long as it takes to "loot" a planet in ME2. In ME2 the same process consists of scanning the planet (by holding down the left mouse button while slowly moving your mouse around) and collecting it's resources by clicking the right mouse button... The first game was a complete scam by Bioware and also by analysts from around the world. From the second I was not expecting less and so it proved. Only for rent and yet the game is a waste of time and money.
