  • Summary: Radiant Silvergun, restored by Treasure, is now available. The shoot ‘em up gameplay that made this a legend remains unchanged, but a hidden "Ikaruga-style" shooting mode gives everyone something new. Previously only available in Japan, Radiant Silvergun on Xbox LIVE Arcade also provides leaderboards, co-op play locally or over Xbox LIVE, downloadable replays, and improved visuals making it the version to own. Treasure hasn't tampered with the overall mechanics of Radiant Silvergun, and doing so would have been a mistake.

You play Ikaruga if you want a great example of where the shoot-em-up was going at the start of the century. You play Radiant Silvergun for a great example of where it was at the end of the last.

Radiant Silvergun has a lot to offer: you can play it like a manic shooter and enjoy the weapons and skillful dodging, or you can make it more cerebral and go for the ridiculous color combos. Either way, you're getting one of the very best 2D shooters ever made.

As with any vertical shooter, there's no escape from the laborious memorization of unforgiving patterns. That fact alone means that not everyone can fall in love with Radiant Silvergun's unique mix of frenetic combat and fast-paced puzzle-solving. But if you don't mind working for every inch of progress and using your noodle more than usual, you'll happily spent innumerable hours perfecting your patrols through enemy space.

Is RSG worth downloading? If you read everything above and it sounds intriguing to you, then yes, absolutely. If this doesn't sound like the sort of shooter you're looking for, you might want to think it over for a bit before committing to a purchase.
  7. The best shooter ever...simply isn't. But it's still bloody brilliant fun, even if it's beyond the skills of most gamers. [Christmas 2011, p.111]

A challenging, deep, and incredible shooter, well worth the required time it will take to become great at it (or even merely proficient). It's clear many people seem intent to punish the game with low review scores because they lack this patience, or don't understand what they're playing. Quite sad. Expand

This is a great shooter, but not for everyone. Extremely steep learning curve and absurdly hardcore difficulty await you here, but there are rewards for the persistent. This is from a different era of games -- a shooter that could take years to master and doesn't hold your hand for a single second. Online co-op is also quite spotty -- very difficult to find a match, and when you do, your game may be filled with lag. If you've got patience, and you're not against the idea of replaying a single stage hundreds of times to master it, then you'll likely love this ultra hardcore gem from the golden era of shooters.
