Feb 20, 201296Scary Girl, a visual treat and even more fun to play.
-
Feb 1, 201291Scarygirl is easily the most fun I've had with a 2D side-scrolling platformer in a long long time. If you're in the market for a platforming experience that isn't meant for gamers with 2 brains, 3 hands, and 15 fingers, then go download Scarygirl right now.
-
Mar 14, 201284Stylish and imaginative. [Apr 2012, p.85]
-
Feb 20, 201280Priced at 1,200 MSP ($15 USD), Scarygirl is on the high end of the impulse purchase range, but still worth the cost. It's one of those select titles that grabs your interest from the start and holds it through the end of the adventure.
-
Jan 27, 201280If you enjoy a good platformer, you've found one. Scarygirl is weird, yes, but also wonderful.
-
Jan 31, 201277Scarygirl is a beautiful platform that push style over the limits leaving sometimes gameplay behind.
-
Feb 3, 201276A good title, with a charming character design and a very approachable gameplay. Although its ideas are not very original, it offers more than enough content and a cooperative mode.
-
Jan 25, 201275The unique art style and characters give the game personality and the level design and action are engaging.
-
Jan 20, 201275f you like a challenge, love finding collectables, and want a constantly evolving journey through 21 platforming levels, give ScaryGirl a chance. It rides that old-school balance of fun and frustrating down to the final boss fight.
-
Jan 24, 201274If you've got proper funds and a skill set to match, you'll have a good time with Scarygirl. While the presentation isn't as top shelf as those nifty stop-motion animated films I mentioned, it definitely holds up compared to other platformers of this nature. And the gameplay is fun too, as long as you don't develop an over reliance to throwing things around.
-
Mar 9, 201270There's a decent game here overall. It isn't particularly difficult, and experienced gamers will be able to blow through it in a day or two, I imagine. But it looks cool, and it harks back to a simpler time, when 2D platformers ruled the roost.
-
Feb 20, 201270If you've already blown through Rayman Origins with four buddies, Scarygirl will have little to offer you in terms of challenge. If you're new to the platform genre, however, Scarygirl is a fine little experience that won't frighten anyone.
-
Jan 30, 201270Scarygirl isn't a total disappointment. Sure, the combat isn't its strongest suit, and being steamrolled time and time again by the tough battles later in the game gets old, but it's hard not to be drawn in by this curious cartoonish realm and the weirdos who live in it. This highly imaginative and beautiful game redeems itself with quirky creativity when its mechanics occasionally fumble.
-
Jan 23, 201270Scarygirl is simple, attractive and well done. It doesn't surprise and the graphic approach could have been better than the chosen 3D models, especially knowing the chaming style of the Flash game. However it´s an entertaining platformer with tons of actions and a nice style.
-
Feb 8, 201265What we really craved, though, were a little more story (beyond quick cutscenes and text) and some interesting puzzles - stuff that might've given us a better connection to the source material. As is, Scarygirl's pretty but feels a bit empty.
-
Jan 25, 201265Despite some technical issues, Scarygirl offers a fair five hour playthrough with a cool style based on the original graphic novel created by Nathan Jurevicius.
-
Jan 28, 201263From the homonymous comic, an action platform with some variety. Combat system is slightly redundant and gameplay is frustrating in advanced levels.
-
Jan 24, 201261Scarygirl has a great visual design that blends the creepiness of Coraline with the charm of Tim Schafer's Pyschonauts and quite often achieves that living storybook charm. I loved the use of the narrator for the opening movie and to preface each chapter, and the music and sound effects fit the game flawlessly. Sadly, the game flops in the gameplay department with buggy combat and glitchy platform jumping sections where one misstep will send you back to a poorly placed checkpoint to do it all over and over again. Repetition to the point of frustration is not fun and not good gameplay. It might have been back in the early 90's, and if you are comfortable with that old-school nostalgia then Scarygirl might be for you.
-
Apr 2, 201260The biggest problem is that there really isn't anything you haven't seen before. [Issue#83, p.105]
-
Mar 23, 201260Lovely design, ruined by imprecision. [Apr 2012, p.109]
-
Feb 26, 201260With its very original story in its very original visuals this platform game has been toying with the genre of 2D fighting games. It won't knock you out, but if you fancy this genre or the unusual hero(ine)s you'll be entertained for a while.
-
Jan 24, 201260Scarygirl is cute, workable, but otherwise routine - its style inching ahead of its substance.
-
Jan 23, 201260Scarygirl has style to spare, but vexing combat and loose controls get in the way of a great time.
-
Jan 23, 201260If you're hankering for some PS1 platforming of old but can't find the console in the clutter of the attic, this title should fulfill that need for the day or two it takes to complete.
-
Jan 19, 201260A fun, attractive 2D platformer of the sort that can nowadays only exist on services like Xbox Live Arcade. Although it's not quite as distinctive as the art style suggests.
-
Feb 1, 201259Behind the comical façade hides a short and generic 2D-Jump&Run in the tradition of Bionic Commando. You fight, you jump and you swing with a continually growing array of tools but the unbalanced difficulty level drags you down time and again.
-
Feb 28, 201250You'd have to have a hell of a lot of spare time and cash to make room in your life for this. [Issue#119, p.119]
-
Jan 29, 201250Scarygirl just isn't worth the price, except for huge fan of Jurevicius' art, or those desperate for something new to play in January's barren wasteland of game releases.
-
Jan 26, 201250In the end, if Scarygirl retailed for less or spent a little more time in the oven getting the elements a bit more tweaked, then I'd say the game would be worth the money. As is, you may want to trial this bad boy (or girl) to see if this adventure is worth putting up the 15 bucks. Otherwise, unless you are a big fan of the content, it's decent enough to hold off until it is on sale or something in the future.
-
Jan 23, 201250There are fleeting moments of fun to be had in this six hour campaign, and the two player offline co-op could make for an agreeable game for parents to play with kids. But Scarygirl is simply a functional platformer-come-brawler that's almost entirely devoid of distinction. With so many better adventures on XBLA, there's little reason to shell out for this one.
-
Jan 23, 201245If you're a fan of the character somehow, that shows you like things that are "unique" and have a "dark" "personality," and are not at all manufactured in order to appeal to an overplayed "edgy" aesthetic. As such, this game is for you, because that means you have mediocre taste. Everyone else, save your valuable time and effort.
-
Jan 25, 201240Scarygirl is riddled with countless inherent flaws that make the game, in no simpler terms, bad.
-
Jan 24, 201230Successful only as an interactive showcase of Jurevicius' art – and arguably the Flash original was more effective in that regard – it's almost criminal that a world this vivid should be so wearying to explore.
