The best thing here is still the three games, which hold up amazingly well after all this time. You could get them by buying the now-very-cheap Ultimate Genesis Collection (which includes dozens of other classics), but for purists, these fully featured versions are a must.

Overall, this collection is not bad; I just feel if you have wanted to play these games, you have already done so. If you haven't, and you want to play some old school hack and slash with a friend, or you are the leaderboard chasing kind of person, there is a decent amount of content here for the ten dollar price of admission. They could have botched this re-release, but this time SEGA has released a more standout update that it has done in the past, and we can certainly thank them for that.

Frustrations aside: playing this with a friend is still somewhat fun … again.

It is difficult to review such a compilatorion when compared with the many ones that have been released in the last months. Sega keeps all the elements which turned Golden Axe into a classic, but there is nothing else than that, with almost no enhancements over the original games. Only for hardcore, nostalgia-driven fans.

Despite the fact that the franchise was a lot of fun all those years ago, the Golden Axe games can't stand their ground in 2012. This collection is a must-have for the fans of the series. If you're looking for a beat' m up: there are better alternatives available.

In short, if you have a hankering to play the Golden Axe games, take a pass on this collection and spend $20 on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. It'll cost you an additional ten dollars, but you'll end up with a total of 49 games instead of just three.
