Wow, I never would've expected seeing Shogi on xbox and I bought it as soon as it appeared. No regrets at all - the best computer implementation out there and the AI is nails. Good job!

One of the best computerized versions of Shogi I have seen. The tutorials give the new player a good grounding in the basic moves and tactics. Has both Kanji and move based piece sets to make learning easier. The inability to save games for later review is the only thing missing.

  1. Much like the conceptually similar Gin Rummy, the presentation is scrappy, the options minimal and the overall impression is of a game that will satisfy the demands of dedicated Shogi players but has little to offer anyone else.
  2. With videogame versions, it’s all about the features and spit and polish. Shotest Shogi does some of those things very well, but ultimately new converts will enjoy it more. It’s a great introduction to a classic game of strategy.

Shogi is the kind of game that you can get hooked on. If you enjoy chess, playing and learning this variant will be right up your alley. However, the 800 Microsoft point ($10 US) price tag will have you wishing more effort would have been put into the presentation and game options.
