Lesser scale, story (from what little there was in the first game to begin with), and dumbed down game mechanics make this a classic case of sequel slump.
The story is not so much worse then that of the first game. The problem with this is the fact that the first game didn't really have a story worth mentioning. Just like SC1, the second game tells more or less the same conflict from the perspectives of three different commanders, each belonging to one of the three factions. It does try to have some depth, but any attempt at this is mired by terrible writing and voice acting that is often even worse. My least favorite character is the villain, who tries to come across as sinister but only succeeds is making himself look like a crazy person of the type you would find a loony bin. The gameplay tries to live up to that of the first game, but ultimately fails due to the degree to which everything has been simplified. To build things you now have to pay up front instead of just having a steady enough flow of mass and energy. To make matters worse, the economy system is even more time consuming because you have to set up so many resource structures. There are fewer unit types to choose from as well, so prepare to miss the good old days when you always had the right unit for the right situation. Furthermore, the scale seems like less then a tenth of that of the first game. No more continent sized maps, just small islands. Most if not all of the content you get from this game will be from multiplayer, as the campaigns are not worth playing. However, there is still some fun to be had with matchmaking, particularly for the console version. There are quite a few bugs though, so don't be surprised if you have to wait more then ten minutes for a stable match.
Overall, this game is an average RTS, but still a failure considering how far reduced it is from the original. Speaking of which, if you have the first game and its expansion on your PC, stick with that. There is nothing in this game that will be worth your while over what you already have.… Full Review »
AlexandraJ.Mar 29, 2010Simply fantastic and fun. Easy to pick up but still challenging enough to have struggle.
BobbyS.Mar 17, 2010Not near as good as the PC version. Sometimes RTS should stick to PC and concentrate on making that the best experience possible!
