  • Summary: Based on the PC version of the same name, The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth II for the Xbox 360 will bring players into the heart of Middle-earth to live the battles seen in the blockbuster New Line Cinema films and classic J.R.R. Tolkien literary fiction. The game boasts a new and intuitive console-specific control scheme that will allow novice players to enjoy the game’s signature strategy gameplay while giving expert players the flexibility needed to engage in a deeply complex strategy experience. Players will directly control hundreds of units in an attempt to defeat enemy armies, conquer new lands, and seal the fate of Middle-earth. [Electronic Arts] Expand

  1. Sure, the camera can be a pain and the map isn't in any way natural to use, but you get used to these quirks and they don't get in the way of the very engaging gameplay, while very authentic renditions of every aspect of the LOTR world, both visually and aurally, are spread across the various campaigns and multiplayer game modes.

As engrossing as it is pretty, while also offering up a rare control system that allows the game's core real-time strategy component to remain the right side of intuitively 'real-time' without ever lapsing into finger-breaking trials of game-pad frustration.
  3. The controls and easy command selection allow anyone to enter the fray, while the ferocious battles will keep skilled players at bay.

I'm very pleased with how TBfM-eII on the 360 turned out, and while it does have some issues, it's a shining example of how persistence and well-constructed game design can bring a classic genre of games to the unlikely console platform in true style.
  5. Yes, the RTS genre has been seen on consoles in the past, but never to this level, and with this much polish.
  6. A quality console RTS game. There are still times that I’d prefer playing this type of game on a PC, but overall I found the controls easy to work with and although I was frustrated at my lack of ability I didn’t think it was the fault of the controls at all.
  7. I’ll give EA credit for trying what few companies have the cajones (or cockiness) to do –stick an RTS on a television. Unfortunately, the result of their effort is somewhat inconsistent and misses the smooth, intuitive play of the original.

Awesome. I can't believe how easy it is to control and the multiplayer is a blast. Totally pick this up if you are into RTS and love your 360!

I loved this game - the selection controls were very good, and the graphics were top-notch. With a 5.1 surround system the sounds come from all around and really help you identify what's just off-screen. Only reason I didn't give it a 10 is because of the pauses in gameplay (texture loads?) that cause the framerate to stutter. Seems to only happen at the beginning of levels but they could do better. Maybe they should use one of the other CPU cores to do the loading in the background? Expand

After reading a lot of the media reviews, I was kind of skeptical about buying this title. However I had a copy of OverG Fighters itching to be returned. I was concerned about all the comments about the frame rate drops during large scale battles, not as big a problem as I had expected. My only real dissappointment was the shadows in the game are pre-N64ish. A whole large tree's shadow has a poly count of around 25. I had alot of fun playing this game. Im only on the third mission, but lots of fun. I reccomend not skipping over the tutorial on this one though. The controlls work well, obviously not as well as a PC, but very well. There should have been a way to map out some of the controlls to using a keyboard or even mouse. Oh well, maybe next time. Expand
