  • Summary: Worms Ultimate Mayhem is a souped-up, re-vamped, high definition reimagining of Worms 3D and Worms 4: Mayhem, bringing both games together in one incredibly over-stuffed, over-the-top package for Xbox 360 from Xbox LIVE, for PlayStation 3 from Playstation Network and also for PC from Steam. Including all of the content from the original games, Worms Ultimate Mayhem also brings a whole host of anarchic additions more single player missions, more puzzles, more customisation, more worms! Getting tired of shooting rockets back and forth? Play in the skills challenge or, better yet, hop in a story mode and really wreak havoc. But bring your game when playing online; there definitely are some Worms veterans on the scene.

The 2D Worms games have always been the best ones in the franchise and Worms Ultimate Mayhem only further proves that statement. The gameplay is slow and even firing a weapon sounds easier then it really is. As every Worms game, this one is funny and will give you some crazy weapons to work with. If you have an Xbox 360 and you want to play Worms, just go for Worms 2: Armageddon.

    Moderately fun. [Christmas 2011, p.85]
  4. We'd be happier with a full rebuild of the original game. [Christmas 2011, p.110]

While Worms Ultimate Mayhem tries to deliver a fun and entertaining way of destroying invertebrates, there is just too much going against this title that could justify a purchase of any amount other than free. There is a bunch of content, however the camera system is just too broken to allow you to enjoy the game, and when combined with the AI and other aspects, Worms Ultimate Mayhem should be one that gets passed over.

Worms Ultimate Mayhem isn't a bad game, but has cheaper and better prequels, which in the end makes this a completely unnecessary release.

It's a cruel irony that the one major change made to the Worms formula over the years only serves to erode the fun of the original incarnation. Implemented differently, perhaps 3D could have worked. Yet when its presence adds camera issues, reduces the power of weaponry to destroy scenery and elevates water-deaths to an art form, it's only reasonable to conclude that it is a failed experiment.

The critic's reviews of this game are absurd. The first thing you should know about Worms - Ultimate Mayhem is that it is actually two original X-Box games, Worms 3D and Worms 4, rolled into one beautiful, HD super-game. This could have easily been released as a full price disc game and it would be a steal. The fact that Team 17 saw fit to release it as a value XBLA game makes this an insanely good deal. The gameplay is still every bit as good as the two original releases. I recommend that you read some of the positive reviews of those two games if you are unsure about this game.

The two main gripes I've seen from critics are related to the camera and the AI. While it is true that the camera takes a little practice to get used to, it is by no means difficult to master. As for the AI, I found it to be sufficient for single-player, but honestly, Worms games are made to be played against other people. Just go round up a couple of friends, or hit X-Box Live for some multiplayer action, and you will find hours and hours of hilarious, competitive entertainment. Really, what more could you ask of a game than that?

Beyond the single-player campaigns and seamless multiplayer integration, there are achievements to earn and extra stages and customization options thrown in for good measure. Bottom line, this is arguably one of the best XBLA games ever made. It is certainly one of the best values you'll find outside of a bargain bin. This game is the very definition of a must-have title and it's a shame that it has for some reason been so overlooked by the critics. Try it today and you won't be disappointed.
