  1. Fans of titles like Contra and the old side scrolling days will more then appreciate a new take on their favorite type of game; the added freedom, 3D models, secret areas and numerous weapons all blended nicely to create a wonderful experience for the price.

The game's main problem, aside from being strictly by the numbers, is the lack of a walk button. The character always runs, an dtoo fast for the game at that. [Jan 2004, p.65]

It may be mind-numbing twitch action, but it's cheap action, and the game is actually pretty fun, even though it lacks variation.
  4. It is a good thing this game only costs $20, because that's exactly what it's worth. [Feb 2004, p.109]
  5. As a side scrolling shooter, Blowout does a decent job, but as a next-generation title, it just doesn't cut it. There's something to be said for linear, simplistic gameplay, but for most gamers, this takes it a little too far.

Blowout's dialogue and overall production value are sufficiently self-aware so that they're oddly amusing. [Mar 2004, p.98]

For the budget price, Blowout isn't a bad game, as it follows the rules of its genre very closely and, while offering little in the way of innovation, does at least feel like someone cared when they made it.
  8. It offers very few thrills, and instead, an overly cumbersome control scheme and some insanely convoluted level designs suck just about all the fun out of what could have been an entertaining shooter.
  9. Factor in the lack of two-player action and all that's left is a tepid experience.

Mindless shooting of repetitive baddies and unlocking doors across 10 practically identical levels is not fun, and that is pretty much all you do here. [Feb 2004, p.82]
  11. 2D side-scrolling shooters don't really have much place at home on Xbox. Those such as Blowout should be cast out of the Xbox residence like a shamed family junkie and take refuge in the last-gen console crack house where they well and truly belong. [Official UK Xbox Magazine]

While all you do in this game is kill aliens, open blast doors, get keys and such and such. I quite liked this game. The graphics may be outdated and the music is horrible, but the gameplay is pretty good in this game. And this game dosen't have that much of a story.
So 6 out of 10 for me.

I like this game. Yes, it's a little repetitive but the core gameplay is solid and very playable. It's like you're in the I like this game. Yes, it's a little repetitive but the core gameplay is solid and very playable. It's like you're in the movie Aliens, wandering around a dark futuristic maze with scary aliens hunting you. It plays similar to 2d Contra, but with the focus on escaping the maze, instead of just moving forward. Full Review »
