Possibly the best interactive story ever told.

Dreamfall is more an experiment in interactive fiction than a game. Aside from a few easy puzzles, some boring combat (with no more than 10 or 15 enemies in total) and some running around to fetch various items, there is very little actual gameplay. If you're the kind of person who always breezes past cutscenes, you'll probably want to avoid this one since at least 75% of the Dreamfall is more an experiment in interactive fiction than a game. While that may all sound fairly negative (and at odds with the 8 rating I'm giving this game) there is much to recommend this game. The soundtrack, voice acting, environments and imagery are all at a very high level and the story is great. From a pure gaming point of view, Dreamfall may fall somewhat short, but for those who enjoy movies as much as they enjoy games and who are able to set aside preconceptions, this is an experience worth checking out. What Dreamfall does do well is tell a story. Expand

Good though somewhat flawed gameplay is quickly forgotten as you become wrapped up in the staggeringly amazing story!

Great story, intriguing characters. Not too much gameplay, but you wont have time to miss it.

One of the best stories ever in any art medium.

One of the very few really good games to come out in recent years.

Very powerfull storytelling...refreshing to 'play' a game that isn't really a game. I've played this game a couple of days straight because the storyline is so addicting...great stuff for those that like stories !

Very good game, in some parts a bit to hard to control, but you have all the time you need.

  1. It's an interactive story in the truest sense and as such the gameplay is secondary - although there is enough to do between cut scenes, with the usual puzzle solving, exploration, sneaking, mini-games and even a bit of combat.
  2. Let's just hope the attempt to broaden its audience works: Dreamfall ends on a cliffhanger. If it's all the same to the creators, we'd rather not wait another six years for a resolution.
  3. If you share director Ragnar Tornquist's view that being engaged in dialogue is a form of gameplay, then there's a richness here that few other titles have the ability or luxury to create. [June 2006, p.86]
