  1. Best of all, there is a surprisingly large number of people playing this game online, especially compared to other racing games like "Midnight Club II."
  2. It might not take as much effort to overcome or offer as much content as arcade stalwarts "Midnight Club" and "Burnout," but neither game has the same depth online, and only hot seating Burnout's crash sections with a few friends can rival the Hollywood playground DICE has built here for sheer fun.
  3. What’s truly remarkable is that Digital Illusions has done a wonderful job retaining the essence of the previous Midtown Madness titles.
  4. Lives up to its hype, but we can't help but think how much better it would have been with a better choice of cities. [Aug 2003, p.84]

If you own Xbox Live and like racing games, MM3 is a no-brainer. In fact, if you like racing games at all, this is a reason to get an Xbox and Xbox Live.
  6. The multitude of gameplay options also makes this one of the most customizable racing/driving games available.
  7. MM3 is a 100% arcade-style racer. The focus is on fun, and that's just what you get.
  8. I enjoyed MM3 but it did start to become a little repetitive in the single player mode, although there are lots of challenges, tracks and cars to unlock at some point you seem to be racing just to unlock the next track or particular vehicle and not because of the race.
  9. The one compliant that I have about the Xbox Live part really has nothing to do with the game as it handles the online play flawlessly, but rather the players who show up. I suppose it’s just the price you have to pay to be online, but do I really have to hear people that are just plain mean-spirited and vulgar every time I go online? Probably.
  10. There is a nasty bug which ensures that you will hear the same song, over and over again, until you're ready to kill someone.
  11. Nearly everything in your way can be smashed or bowled over, which becomes almost illegal fun when your bug is replaced by a city bus. [July 2003, p.79]
  12. DICE has done a respectable job of transferring the Midtown Madness experience to the Xbox.
  13. There are some clipping problems and some slightly unrealistic crashes, but otherwise the game does look good and the damage models are fun and entertaining.

Offline, the game is ordinary and without much originality to it. Online, though, it is another kettle of fish all together, and there are few games out there that can match it for thrills, chills, and spills. The variety of play is just incredible.
  15. And as long as you follow good online etiquette and choose good people to play with, this is possibly the best example of how the Xbox Live experience should be... exactly how you want it to be.
  16. Your own music, non-artificial intelligence and some of the most realistic recreations of real-life locations we've seen, and having it easily playable online through your television is a wonderful thing. We've been waiting for stuff like this for years.
  17. Players looking for a terrific online racing game won't be disappointed.
  18. The good thing with Midtown Madness 3 is that it doesn’t take itself at all seriously.
  19. There’s no diplomatic way to say this, it never feels like you have anything interesting to do across MM3's many missions.
  20. They simply traded realism for a little wreckless abandon. If that’s music to your ears, we can finish the paperwork in my office. If you’re driving solo though, you might want to lease before you buy.

The real stars of the game are the two cities, which are huge arenas ripe for careening around in.
  22. 80
A refreshing multiplayer showing overshadows the humdrum single-player game.
  23. Although the single-player feels like a bit of an afterthought, the action-packed, entertaining and well-executed multiplayer is first-rate - and with the genre still so sparse, it's probably the best online racer you can buy on any console platform.
  24. While the physics are far from perfect, it’s a combination of strong multiplayer gameplay and excellent graphics that make this a title worth getting, if only just so.
  25. When put up against the likes of Midnight Club 2 it fails to impress because the single-player part of the game is just horrible.

It looks like I will be playing this game online for months to come; I have yet to touch the offline game since my first time playing. It’s sad, too, considering that this game was supposed to be so well rounded.
  27. An all-around solid game, there are a few significant potholes. Two immense cities - Paris and D.C. - are just not enough... More precision and distinction between the vehicles would have upped the replay value.
  28. The real fun is in the online game modes, and I must say that I had some of the most fun since signing on to Xbox LIVE while playing this game.
  29. It satisfies your need to do stuff - fun tasks like picking up passengers, tailing mob bosses, and running jalopies off the road - as well as your need for speed. [Aug 2003, p.119]
  30. Feels like a shiny new version of "Crazy Taxi," only this time, infinitely less deep. [Aug 2003, p.80]
  31. All traffic and pedestrians are removed from the game. Fortunately, the capture the flag and tag style modes are plenty entertaining, especially with a larger group. [Aug 2003, p.78]
  32. With cartoony controls, fast cars, and great multiplayer modes, Midtown Madness 3 is an excellent buy for any Xbox Live player. However, the game is not a shining beacon of single player goodness and racing game enthusiasts without Live support would be better off looking at other titles.
  33. Personally, except for the glitch in the soundtrack and a few minor details in the graphics, the game is fun and that is what is important.
  34. 70
A game that has some bright spots tarnished by some dull areas of mediocrity.
  35. The single-player is slow and unforgiving next to the white-hot motoring antics of the online experience.
  36. 60
The fast-paced weaving through the streets of two different cities holds a wealth of interesting gameplay. While there's nothing new or innovative here, MM3 offers easy playability with plenty to do.
  37. 58
It doesn't have the polish or intensity of "Midnight Club II." [Aug 2003, p.31]
  38. The cool thing about the online mode is that you can join games already in progress.
  39. In all honesty, I enjoyed the main bulk of gameplay about as much as I do that throbbing sensation when a Q-tip is jammed just a little too far into my ear. [July 2003, p.115]
  40. The campaign doesn't last very long though, and isn't all that interesting to begin with.
  41. A dumbed-down "Midnight Club" with a bad soundtrack. [18 July 2003, p.82]

Single Player is boring, but the Multiplayer is one of the best! But now there is no Xbox Live and we only can play in the Local Area Network. I love it Full Review »

Infuriating trials, tedious repetition, and endlessly ramming yourself on the curb. Sound like fun? No, didn't think so. The checkpoint races are largely generic, and although finally completing them brings some satisfaction, its short lived. The racing really just isn't that fun. The work undercover mode adds a bit of variety, involving ferrying passengers about at crazy speeds, and working as a stunt driver, but again it just lack a certain something. It's like a compilation of imitations of other, better games. And there are points where you will get stuck over and over again. Its a nice idea to be able to explore Paris and Washington, but since the actual driving isn't much fun, and you can't run over civilians no matter how hard you try, you won't find much to occupy you, other than plunging into the river as you try to acquire all the hidden pain jobs in a desperate attempt to extend the meagre experience this game provides.
