100Game play is where Pro Racer Driver leaves most games behind. The computer A.I. is top notch, and reacts like a real driver and not just robot drones that are either set in one pattern, or trying to wreck your car purposely.
-
The actual racing experience is virtually second to none, each car handles wonderfully different to the last you raced in, with a very solid and weighty feeling to them.
-
90While the graphics are beautiful, the damage system is unbelievable, and the audio is right-on, the career mode is what really carries Pro Race Driver across the finish line. The amount of detail and attention Codemasters put into this mode is untouched by any other console racing game to date.
-
Has the variety of "Gran Turismo," but does a better job of channeling your interest through the trials and tribulations of Ryan McKane." [Apr 2003, p.91]
-
89It could've been the four-wheeled equivalent of "Moto GP," technically brilliant racing online, but Xbox owners will have to simply settle for regular old technically brilliant racing.
-
The AI, which is the weak point in this game, can be a bit cheeky at times and will often wreak havoc on the course. If you can manage the AI, you'll find a game with plenty of passing and quality racing.
-
81The gameplays a bit straightforward and can get sickeningly boring without music, but under the right circumstances (I.E. Turn up the stereo, find some friends) PRD is an excellent title.
-
81An excellent racing game, with tight control and great AI that transcends its gimmicky "storyline" angle.
-
The story following McKane and his fictional personal battle in the real TOCA environment not only makes this stand out from other racers but it also opens the racer up to a wider mainstream appeal.
-
80One of the most refreshingly racing games in a long time and the clear, concise, interfaces and controls make it a delight to spend time with - especially if you're playing alongside some mates in the split-screen mode. It's awesome stuff. [Xbox Gamer]
-
A surprisingly fun arcade romp with a bit of story thrown in. [June 2003, p.85]
-
80As disturbing, shocking and distrustful as it may seem, the cinematic cuts and their dramatic content are actually well written, directed and acted. There's just enough competent drama going on here that you can take your race driver's odyssey halfway seriously.
-
77A racing game that puts drivers in the spotlight without sacrificing exciting on-track action.
-
The story concept and solid gameplay give it a definite edge. While it's not really the caR-PG it sets out to be, there's more than enough here to warrant a try.
-
Pro Race Driver's saving grace is found in the application of Codemaster's acclaimed TOCA racing engine. [June-July 2003, p.92]
-
70One big problem that irks me about the game is that there is no spotter for you. Your crew chief will help you from time to time, but thats rare, and with no rear view mirror, its even worse to race.
-
60The whole game feels bloated, like its trying to do too many things at once, and the new character-oriented career mode is uninspired.
