  1. Developer WOW takes advantage of Xbox Live's potential to deliver truly compelling multiplayer races. [Dec/Jan 2004, p.98]
  2. I know that some gamers will find the Xbox Live feature of this game irresistible. For them this game will be a great bargain.
  3. I jumped online and started trading cars with other people, and getting into some competitive races. All of a sudden, an old game became almost brand new.
  4. Selecting Online mode almost literally transports you to another game - a new interface and a surprisingly robust and navigable online selection screen. [Dec 2003, p.93]
  5. Even with its online flaws Sega GT Online is a steal at $20, especially if the 2002 game isn’t already part of your game library... This is easily the deepest racer available on the Xbox. It’s a shame that it’s not the best.
  6. Battling against real opponents on Xbox Live is a blast, but teaming up with buddies for relay and rally races is where it's really at. [Dec 2003, p.228]

The single player experience has been beefed up, the number of cars to unlock in incredible, the online facet is simply some of the most fun you’ll have with a racer online and the overall price is incredibly cheap for what you get. At $19.99, there is no reason to pass this game by.
  8. Deal of the century? How about deal of the millennium! If you have even a passing interest in racing games or online competition you should put this one in the glove box, stat.
  9. 80
If you’ve already built up a garage full of cars in Sega GT 2002, you can import your saved game and be online instantly.
  10. The gameplay is well done and the game offers that certain feeling of accomplishment, as players must build, maintain, and race the car of their making. This feeling alone will keep many players coming back for more.
  11. 8 / 7 / 8 / 8 - 31 silver [Vol 785]
  12. With each release this series keeps losing more and more ground. [Dec 2003, p.170]
  13. 75
The substantial, full game is included, with all the cool modes, as well as a host of new content...but the much-trumpeted online mode is a little too problematic to recommend without hesitation.

Whats unfortunate is there is no real difference in graphics from Sega GT 2002, which is disappointing. I would have liked to have seen better car models, car damage and effects. Why is it that games which claim excellent realism, often the cars handling is poor?
  15. 72
For all its faults, Sega GT Online is a good arcade racer -whilst the likes of TOCA and Project Gotham go for simulation, Sega GT gives you an old-fashioned (and some would say out-dated) arcade feel.
  16. 70
This isn't the best buy if all you want is an online racer. That's, by far, GT Online's weakest aspect, which is why the final score is drastically lower than the original.
  17. I have major issues with the steering being too sensitive, but most everything seems to chug along quite nicely. Outfitting cars and stocking up the garage is always fun, but prepared to invest some time to do so.
  18. Despite improvements, the game does look visually dated, and as such can't hope to top PGR2 in a beauty competition.
  19. The game runs smoothly and offers decent competition from the cpu cars.
  20. At every turn, Sega GT Online screams "middle of the road", beset with every GT cliché in the book and with few noteworthy features beyond the obvious online antics to make it stand out from the overcrowded ranks of Gran Turismo wannabes.
  21. While the $20 price tag might seem like a great reason to pick up Sega GT Online, it’s not.
  22. If you have played Sega GT 2002 at all, in any way, stick clear of this title, and avoid that empty feeling you'll get from paying money to play it.
  23. The $19.99US price point doesn’t make it a complete write-off.
  24. Regardless of which online game type you decide to compete in, any game that you play will be stricken by a pretty severe amount of lag.
  25. Ultimately, owners of Sega GT should ask themselves whether a handful of new elements and the online component are worth the investment (even at the reduced price). [Feb 2004, p.107]
  26. GT Online's price merely makes it attractive in a low-budget, disposable way. [Jan 2004, p.90]
  27. The unmistakable quality persists but only the keenest fans are likely to find the online component draw enough to upgrade, while the same newbie-repelling difficulty as before may struggle to attract fresh followers. [Jan 2004, p.115]
  28. The online experience as a whole needs some serious work. I’m not sure if it’s lag-related, or simply poor coding, but it’s not unusual to see cars sort of “stutter” their way ahead of or behind you in turns. Collision detection is also fairly shoddy online.
  29. 60
If you expect the budget price to reflect the game's poor online performance, you shouldn't be too disappointed. If you demand the same performance and quality in your games that you do in your cars, you'll probably want to pass this one over.
  30. The offline modes of Sega GT Online are completely intact and even deeper than before, with more cars and tracks, so at $20 it's a fantastic deal if you haven't already played it. But if, instead, you're looking for the best online racing game, Sega GT Online just isn't it.
  31. I would suggest at least getting the buggy parts of the Live experience cleaned up before you release a game like this to the public.
  32. The biggest disappointment is how the online games end. As soon as the first player crosses the finish line the game ends. It does not matter if you have one or a dozen laps to go, the game is over.

The simulation - the feel of the cars as you race them is nearly identical to Gran Turismo 3 - the single greatest racing sim ever created. Project Gotham 2 by contrast is awful with its "honking" noise every time you hit something, and the over all feel is way off from what should be expected from a racing sim. The only real shortcoming is the inability to have more than one single game save. Full Review »
