  1. With any luck Krome's overhaul will prove lucrative enough to warrant them continuing the brand, flying Spyro into next-gen skies and who knows, perhaps a veritable rebirth. [Oct. 2006, p.54]
  2. This new Legend is one you'll enjoy immensely while it lasts and crave once it's over.
  3. A pretty sweet game. I just hope that Krome and Sierra will succeed in their experiment to bring a new age of gamer to the once-cutesy character. If not, this might be the last Spyro we ever see – and that would be a shame.
  4. Attractive game reworked properly for the younger types. Help make Spryo truly famous once more. [Christmas 2006, p.125]

The franchise has gotten a serious lift in nearly every area. The overall gameplay was extremely solid for a children's title, the overall presentation was baffling complex – with everything from scripted story events and innovative enemy entrances – and the overall audio/graphical design is definitely stronger than we expected.
  6. A game worth playing if you're a dracophile, if you like the character or like animated movies, and if you're not averse to starting over with a fresh slate.
  7. Unfortunately, the entire affair is filled with repeated waves of what amount to the exact same enemies, and it doesn't take long for boredom to set in.
  8. With puzzle solving taking a backseat to the action, battling enemies becomes the highlight of A New Beginning. If the nonexistent A.I. and poor camera angles were fixed, completing the adventure would be much more fun.
  9. Problematic moments of senseless enemy invulnerability and camera management siphon off some joy, but ultimately, this glorified plushie is fun enough to avoid extinction. [Dec. 2006, p.84]
  10. Aussie expertise has produced the best Spyro game in many years, but the action gets repetitive and some old fans might be dismayed by the emphasis on combat.
  11. The title may say that this is a new beginning, but Spyro's latest adventure isn't much more than a collection of tired, overused platforming clichés.
  12. An anthology of washed up ideas and concepts seen in almost every non-Nintendo platformer post 2D.

Despite some smart moves on the part of the developers (voice talent, good graphics engine, franchise overhaul) none of them really pan out and bring much to the experience, leaving the game to flounder with its new but repetitive focus on combat.

I rated it a ten because I just loved it. It's way better than the other Spyros because there's more things to do and more places to go and more enemies to fight. I love this game. Full Review »

The way this whole game is put together is just awesome - music, the style, the enemies (about time there was finally some decent enemy AI!) and all with a storyline thathangs together, This is just top quality that puts Spyro back up where he belongs. Full Review »

I love Spyro games, but this isn't a Spyro game. Mindless monotonous button pushing with excessive video sequences are all that's on offer. I don't know why the formula has changed. The formula is why Spyro has been so successful. Puzzles, puzzles, puzzles. There aren't any! A waste of money. Definitely the WORST Spyro game released. Booooooooh, you ruined it for the fans.
