Summary

Featuring visual artistry and dark imagery with striking cel-shaded graphics, Killer 7 chronicles the connection between two men whose intertwined paths develop into a compelling tale of revenge and altering personas. Killer 7 propels players into the consciousness of one man and his seven different personalities. The player's challenge is to stop a wave of indiscriminate violence that is plaguing the world. In Killer 7, players take on the role of Harman Smith an unlikely assassin who leads a life as the intermediary link between seven alter egos. Switching between his seven different personalities, Harman employs each character's abilities to terminate targets he deems "deserving to die." Now a powerful underworld kingpin has unleashed violent creatures called "Heaven's Smile." These crazed soldiers, affixed with horrific smiles, have started to wreak havoc on city streets destroying anything unlucky enough to cross its path and overtaking the minds of the populace. It is up to the player to interchange Harman's seven partners; and utilize the special powers that dwell within them in order to assassinate Kun Lan, the notorious criminal overlord behind all the madness. Between gamers’ potential lack of patience and the people needlessly dismissing the title after half an hour simply because it’s ‘trying too hard’, many are going to miss out on one of the most unique and rewarding gaming experiences of the last few years. [Aug 2005, p.120]

The title's incredible atmospheric power is derived from how the presentation is conveyed through gameplay, and how the resulting simplicity helps strip the pacing down to a fine line.

It's eye-candy from start to finish - sometimes you forget you're playing a game and feel like you're controlling the outcome of a blockbuster film instead. The boss battles are some of the best I've experienced, the graphics are some of the best I've seen, the musical score will make every game I review after this one pale in comparison and the unique gameplay will be something that I miss when I finally have to put this gem down.

While it's certainly too violent and heavy for kids under 18 (as the appropriate ESRB rating states), and perhaps too ramblingly intellectual for every taste, Killer 7 is a brilliant piece of work when taken as a whole.

Recommending Killer 7 is frightening, much like recommending A Clockwork Orange, or Pulp Fiction, or Eraserhead. On first inspection Killer 7 appears to be a confused, disjointed mismatch of ideas, but on closer examination some of its inner beauty will slowly begin to shine through. By being different and daring and altogether difficult, it has alienated many. It’s difficult to score killer7. Its unique atmosphere and unique style almost manage to bury the faults evident in the game mechanics and the fact that the game is very simple. For those who aren’t that much into style, killer7 doesn’t offer much more than a straightforward shoot ’em up with lacking puzzles. [July 2005, p.57]

If its creepiness, truckload of style, and inventive concepts sound appealing, then by all means give it a shot. On the other hand, if you think the repetitive shooting, ho-hum puzzles, and inability to actively control your characters' movements will flip your smile upside down, then it might be best to avoid this in favor of another play through "Resident Evil 4" or "God of War."

We admire the effort and love the style, but we expect our video games to be first and foremost good games, not good art. That’s a bonus, not a foundation. What Our Users Said

The average user rating for this game is 8.4 (out of 10) based on 36 User Votes

Note: User votes are NOT included in the Metascore calculation.

Keeton J. gave it a9:
Though the controls may sometimes (but not too often) frustrate, the stylish cel-shaded graphics and great story can keep most hooked on this game. There's also some great level design and cool varied enemies. It's also just too cool to dislike!

Benjamin B. gave it a7:
The game is like art: you can discuss whether it is a masterpiece or just crap. so I want to review it as scientific as possible: graphics: pro: extraordinary, artistic style con: where are the textures?, you need a strong stomach sound: pro: fiting to the mood, disturbing con: not used very often and in an extraordinary way story: pro: sth. new, complex con: confusing gameplay: pro: 7 characters with special abilities con: precreated paths, always walking and shooting - nothing else conclusion: when you are looking for a new gaming experience, it's your game. But don't compare it to other games and NEVER GIVE IT IN HANDS OF KIDS OR PSYCHIC UNSTABLE PERSONS, because after this game they will become mad and run amok. Carefully, I give it a 7, because you can only rate it in a serious way, after you played more games like this one. But it's the 1st one.

Syc gave it a9:
Killer 7 is quality art house gaming. Twisted, inventive and intellegent with brilliant art direction and a clever, somewhat confusing story but, it's not for everyone and is definitely a game that you're going to either love or hate. Well worth checking out though.

JP K. gave it a10:
Truly a vision. A depressing, convoluted, morbid one, but a vision nonetheless. Note that the bad ratings above came from magazines that tend to be sold to dull men seeking... something less than intellectual stimulation. This is a unique game, inhabiting its own universe. I've finished it and been blown away, finished it twice more and read a 30-page essay on it, and still I'm not close to comprehending all of it. Play if you want to think.

I. Lynch gave it an8:
great game. this is what i consider mature gaming, not GTA . challenging, stunning graphics and a smart if sometimes confusing story.

Brandon gave it a9:
On the whole, I have to say this is a curiously compelling game. It took me a little while to get the hang of it, but once I got the basics of the gameplay mechanics down I realized that the gameplay isn't terribly difficult; however, it seems that way initially because the story and plot elements and other bizarre characters and bits of information that are thrown at you are so seemingly off the wall that the game seems more confusing gameplay wise than it ultimately turns out to be. Having just beaten it, I must say that I still have only a vague idea of what was actually going on and what some of the symbolism was. I think this is mainly a game for people with a taste for things that are a bit extreme and who are aching for a new and unique game to sink their teeth into. As I said, the core of the gameplay turns out to be fairly basic, but the game as a whole is so strange and inventive and cool looking that you can't help but admire the developers for having the courage to bring something like this to market. I hope that more developers will be willing to push the envelope like this rather than sticking to stale old formulas. The game isn't perfect by any means, but I'm glad I played it.

Will F. gave it a9:
Great game, hands down! the transferring from one character to another adds great differences in style and the heaven smile are very original. by the way Dakidski... the graphics were SUPPOSED to be like that.... but yea im 14 so... but yea a great game!
