Worth the price of admission for "Sonic CD" alone. [Sept 2005, p.85]

An excellent classics compilation, due mostly to "Sonic CD," finally revived after so much begging. [Sept 2005, p.57]

"Sonic CD" and both "Vectorman" games alone make paying the $30 price an extremely easy decision. With those three brilliant titles in hand, the remaining eight can basically be treated as bonus additions to mess around with.

I can do without some of the Game Gear games in the collection, but to have Sonic CD once again just makes it worth having.

Offering the proverbial something for everyone, Not only does it give Cube owners (and PS2 owners, if you get the PS2 version) the chance to get to grips with some of the lesser known, but ultimately brilliant Sonic games of yesteryear (which are still great now), but also give the long suffering Sega masses the chance to finally play Sonic the Fighters on a home console.

Sonic CD alone would be a good reason to own this collection. If Mega Collection has left you hungry for more Sonic, Gems Collection has got everything else between it and Sonic Adventure DX. Sonic Gems Collection completes the continuum of Sonic history available for GC.

IGN
A decent compilation, even though it’s not as solid as Sonic Mega Collection. At a bargain price of 29 bucks, however, "Sonic CD" and "Vectorman 1" and "2" make for a worthy purchase for fans or anyone who may have missed them the first time around.

Sonic CD is fine game, however, and Sonic R and Sonic the Fighters are worth checking out at the very least. Any fan of Sonic really ought to pick it up.

The title's still worth picking up with the classic Sonic CD game, as well as a few other fun titles that will provide hours of retro gaming joy.

Definitely a weaker package than "Sonic Mega Collection." The only games that truly hold up today are "Sonic CD" and the "Vectorman" titles. The rest are merely passable and are only of interest to the hardcore crowd.

In other words, if this sort of thing matters to you, if you still can't bear to unplug your Dreamcast, and you do own "Virtua Fighter 4" and all the others and think they're brilliant, this is for you.

While seeing Sonic on a Nintendo console is weird enough, this compilation will please the hedgehog's hardcore fans, while being a fun diversion for the masses.

This game would be better if Sega just released Sonic CD for the GCN alone with Vectorman as an unlockable, but only for $20. Instead we get a bunch of lame filler material that is best forgotten.

While a Sonic compilation is always welcome, Sega seems to have shoveled the worst Sonic has to offer in with the sure-to-sell Sonic CD.

Sonic Gems Collection is packed with rare games, but "rare" is frequently confused with "good". Is this disc interesting enough to rent? Absolutely. Is it worth $30? Not really.

Worth looking at, and would probably keep the kids busy for a while, but doesn’t pack the punch it could have with some more titles and unlockables that are WORTH unlocking.

If there's one thing that the Sonic Gems Collection taught me, it's that Sega is out of Sonic games to repackage. None of the titles here are particularly famous, nor was there any particular fan outcry for their release.

Sonic CD is a title worth purchasing on pure merit, and whatever their standard, the sheer number of games on the disc make Gems an economical acquisition.

Unless you're a devout Sonic fan, you probably haven't heard of most of the games included here--and, with a few exceptions, most of these games aren't really worth hearing about.

A woefully uneven mix, but one that true Sonic fans will probably still want to own just for "Sonic CD," aka the best Sonic game ever. [Sept 2005, p.115]

Where's Knuckles Chaotix, one of the few decent games to see the light of day on Sega's abortive 32X system? Or how about Sonic Pocket Adventure for the forgotten Neo Geo Pocket Color? And what about the surprisingly competent Master System ports of Sonic and Sonic 2?

Keep in mind that the gameplay is strictly old-school and while it may have been unique for its time, it hasn't aged well.

The large majority of this package is underwhelming and really not that good to say the least, but the games that are good, are really good, so it’s a definite toss-up.

Apart from housing the much desired Sonic CD and the arcade only Sonic the Fighters, Sonic Gems is a collection of past Sonic titles (most of which appeared on the Game Gear) that shine forth with about as much brilliance and polish as a piece of coal.

This compilation really is quite disappointing. Though Sonic CD is quite nice, and it is worthy of a play-through, that’s the one and only game worth looking at in this.

We can’t stress how outstanding Sonic CD is. It was one of the finest games around in its day and it still offers a fantastic time years later. This game alone makes Sonic Gems Collection a consideration at $30. The other featured titles don’t add enough to the offering.

Another Sonic Collection. "Mega Collection Plus" was good value, but this one is a disappointment. Why were not these included on the Mega Collection? Sonic CD is a nice Sonic game, though. [Nov 2005]

All hardcore Sonic fans should add this game to their collection. It is definitely worth 40 bucks!

Ryan M. gave it a9:
OK, how about a real review. Sonic Gems Collection is an excellent mix of mostly mediocre games. Sonic cd is very good, and I give praise to Sonic R surprisingly, but the rest of the games are oddly bland, and only one or two playthroughs will fill your needs. it is a bit depressing that Streets of Rage was not included for the U.S. version, but with importing, or not living in the U.S., you can enjoy the Streets of Rage games, which are better than a large portion of the games on "Gems." But whether the games are bad or good, I also tend to support compilation discs, which tend to be cheap and very nostalgic.

Jamison C. gave it a10:
Awesome.

Mason C. gave it a10:
This game is hot sonic cd is especially sexy.
