GameNow

Expect some of the coolest levels out there, a slew of amazing characters, and something lacking from many games today: a sense of humor.

Play Magazine

This game is, simply put, brilliant. The music is intoxicating, the locales magical and the overall vibe decidedly dreamy. [Dec 2003, p.77]

Game Chronicles

Great graphics and a breathtaking soundtrack put it right at the top of the 2003 holiday heap. Everything in this game comes together beautifully.

For the most part Sphinx looks amazing. It's super-smooth, very fast and some of the exterior cityscapes are breathtaking, although close up the textures are sometimes very plain.

Nintendojo

You’ve got an awesome fantasy setting (which is really well realised), two characters with original and familiar styles of play, platforming, awesome visuals, 20-hours of gameplay, and something that The Wind Waker didn’t have; A decent challenge.

Take a vacation from the Mushroom Kingdom and Hyrule to explore ancient Egypt. You’ll be glad you did.

IGN

A fairly well balanced title that, like "Zelda," serves up a semi-non-linear experience complete with huge worlds to explore, difficult and satisfying puzzles, entertaining weapon and item advancements, and more, and it's all very much on the same epic scale as Nintendo's franchise.

The controls for both of these characters are very tight and always responsive.

Nintendophiles

While it clearly rips off Zelda in certain areas, the Mummy levels are a breath of fresh air to the entire game. Having Sphinx on his own would have had this game be very cookie cutter, so not enough good things can be said about the Mummy.

Into Liquid Sky

The graphics portion of the game is a pure gold mine of visuals. The game sports a lot of nicely rendered locations, finely detailed textures and some exquisite visual effects.

GameSpot

Strikes a great balance between its fantasy and Egyptian-history-based elements to create a world that is rich with character, color, and originality, and its unique method of puzzle-solving makes it an easy recommendation to any fan of the genre.

Some decent voice acting would have added just that much more to the feel and presentation of this title – so I was disappointed when I realized it was just going to be a text delivery system for the story.

Nintendorks

It provides the type of Zelda thrills you would expect with excellent puzzles and a truly enjoyable game world. Slight deficiencies do announce themselves, including a game-killing glitch 1/3 of the way through, a lackluster final boss and a rushed ending that just screams “Sequel!”

GMR Magazine

Solidly designed, solidly programmed, very pretty, and about as close to "Zelda" as PS2 and Xbox will ever get. This one deserves to be a sleeper hit.

N-Insanity

Truly a great game. It's one of the best adventure titles for the Gamecube, and one that was horribly unnoticed.

Nintendo Power

Clever puzzles, a compelling story, great camera work and a wide variety of actions. [Feb 2004, p.151]

GameSpy

A schizophrenic but enjoyable combination of gameplay styles, and it's worth slogging through the solid Sphinx segments to savor the Mummy magic.

Electronic Gaming Monthly

Getting the Mummy burnt, shocked, and sliced makes for both fun and funny gameplay. Watching Sphinx do double-jumps and sword strokes, on the other hand, fills me with "eh." [Dec 2003, p.204]

GameCritics

Average doesn't have to equate with mediocre or bad, though. Sphinx may not bring anything new to the table or anything gamers hadn't already seen in the Zelda series, but it is a fun game.

games(TM)

While Sphinx's adventures are rather average and play very similarly to "Starfox Adventures" and the Zelda games, the Mummy levels are a different matter - stealth and laughs abound in equal measures and there are some extremely clever puzzles that fully exploit the Mummy's undead status. [Mar 2004, p.119]

Gaming Age

Attempts to be a platform game heavy on the puzzles, but it's really just a boring platform game. It's too bad it's a video game and not a slide show, because playing the game is almost painfully boring at times despite the graphics.

netjak

We’ve been playing games almost exactly like this (though not nearly as pretty) ever since the PlayStation/Nintendo 64 days. While the graphics and audio are just above average, compared to its contemporaries, Sphinx is a rather anachronistic play experience that falls short when seen next to some of the more brilliant and innovative platformers (e.g. "Jak II") around today.

Wouter B. gave it an8:
It's no zelda, but it is a great action adventure.

Victor G. gave it a 5:
The game is great looking and fun UNTIL you get to the spot with the BUG and CAN'T GO ON. My saved game was saved at a BAD SPOT (ONLY 6.5 hrs. into it) and then you have to start all over.

R. G. gave it a 10:
A grand and epic adventure, this game is worthy of being considered one of the great titles for the Gamecube. The levels are immense, the puzzles well thought out, and the action is superb.

Johnathon R. gave it a 10:
Ingenious layout. Hard to stop playing.

Rasheed H. gave it a 9:
This game was fun and entertaining and fairly original and would most likely entertain younger audiences also.
