Nintendo Power

Easily the finest RPG on the GCN, and one of the best that I've ever played. The game is deeper than the Marianas Trench, but somehow it never gets bogged down by its own complexity. [Sept 2004, p.115]

Arguably the finest example ever made of the truly traditional Japanese RPG. It may be clichéd, and altogether a little too bright and happy for its own good, but Tales of Symphonia is nonetheless epic, enjoyable, and superbly constructed.

A long game. You could probably speed through the game in a mere fifty hours, but if you choose to follow all the sub-plots, side quests or indulge in the myriad collectables, you really can fill the more than eighty hours of time that Namco claims this game will take a dedicated player.

The only thing that really got on our nerves was the rubbish dialogue. There are times when it's pretty appalling and it does kind of spoil the magic a little - likewise, the plot can be pretty cliched and RPG veterans will find it tiresome in places. [NGC]

What Our Users Said

Steven gave it a10:
Closest thing to a perfect game, amazing characters, amazing story, extremely fun battles, everything, the only problem is whan playing with multiple people the first player has to be a long range spellcaster othewise the camera will follow first player and leave everyone confused, but if playing with alot of people it isnt really an issue since someone has to be a magic user.

Pablo R gave it a10:
Probably best if not it. It's story isn't cliche.. and the characters with the exception of 1.. are so perfect. It's setting is just so original.. and the music makes you feel the mood.. The battle is the best of any RPG in the world for the simple fact that it's simple and 4 players! How unbelievable is that.

John E. gave it a10:
There isn't much I can say about this game other than amazing. This is without a doubt one of my most played and favorite games ever, though I wasn't expecting it when I bought it. It started off slowly, almost seeming a little boring, but the story started to get more and more complex, but still easy to follow. The character options and development, along with very high replay value, the sheer amount of time you can spend finding new side quests and things to do even after finishing the lengthy main quest, combined with one of my personal all time favorite stories make this game one that any Cube or Wii owner should pick up and definitely enjoy.

Chisame S. gave it a9:
This game is one of my favorites~ I guess it can use some improvement, but the I thought that the characters and the overall story was okay.

Mike gave it a7:
This game starts with a generic story, and that was one of my main fears going into this game. But after playing half way through I found the story started to evolve into a vast epic tale, very book worthy. Now onto the technical game play parts; the battle system is fantastic, one of the best I have seen. Field encounter battles are not so much a drone and this battles are really in close quarters with the enemy which makes it feel like you are actually in a tussle with the enemy, something turn based fighting cant seem to achieve. The praise I gave to the battle system unfortunately cannot be carried over to the game field. The game field is awful and cheesy, the enemies are represented as black blobs and it can really destroy the immersion that you are on an epic quest with friends when you stride around as a giant avoiding black blobs, the music in the field is also very cheesy and repeats itself over and over. Overall the game field breaks whatever emotional scene that came before it. The game can be difficult to navigate sometimes as it never really gives you any clues as to what random faceless NPC you are supposed to talk to next or what area of a town you are supposed to be in. Cut scenes are filled with emotion and great voice acting can be ruined with limited character movements and no physics. Its a good game and I recommend it, just don't expect to play it over and over, as its only the story that will keep you going. (and possibly fights)

Jeremy V. gave it a10:
One of the greatest RPG's of our time. The story is so deep and the characters are so complex. Even with the intricate plot the story runs smoothly. Amazing to play with others, and yet you could watch someone play all day.

Drew A. gave it a4:
Decent battle system coupled with a beyond cliche story and a generally awful cast of charcters.
