Summary
(Also known as "Anno 1701: Dawn of Discovery") In Anno 1701 you can experience the adventurous world of the 18th century with up to three friends, mobile and wireless. Explore, settle and expand in a completely new world. Prove yourself as adventurer and embark on the journey of your lifetime. Set sail to explore nameless islands and strange cultures, prove yourself as strategist, trader and town planner. Develop a new, powerful colony – it's up to you. Based on Germany's successful PC-Game-Franchise, ANNO 1701 for Nintendo DS is original development utilizing the unique options offered by the Nintendo DS. The island worlds of ANNO 1701 can be explored, developed and controlled solely by using the stylus. The upper screen provides all relevant game play information while the game takes its course on the touchscreen below. Three different game modes offer endless fun: a full-fledged campaign including dramatic cut scenes, a versatile endless-game-mode for free exploration and development of the island world, as well as a multiplayer mode offering competitive fun for up to four players via Nintendo WFC.

It is the perfect title for those that enjoy games such as Empire Earth, Civilization, Sim City, etc. I've had tons of fun with this game and will continue to play it for months to come.

The DS once again proves the perfect platform for the real time strategy genre. [Sept 2007, p.88]
VideoGamer
Anno 1701 offers engrossing escapism and a refreshing alternative to more aggressive gaming themes. While it does nothing new for its genre and is firmly stuck in the days of the Amiga when god games were as popular the WWII FPS is today, it is still a great little title that deserves a huge chunk of your time.

One of the best strategy games released on DS, ANNO 1701 brings micro-management to the mainstream.

A stunning little game which deserves a US release and fast. The developers have set the precedent on developing ports for the DS.

Basically, anybody looking to build and maintain an imperialistic empire on their Nintendo DS should get this game.
An ideal choice for fans of the genre, and possibly a more surprising title for gamers who are curious.
For dedicated PC strategy nerds it might seem a little lightweight in comparison to what the desktop platform currently has to offer but, for accessible, deep, pocket-sized empire-building this is a game hard to fault.

In terms of the game’s central challenge, it excels at dividing the player’s attention between ambitions for continuous expansion and the manual maintenance of the empire as it stands. [Sept 2007, p.97]
Games Master UK
An intuitive civilisation management game that works just as well on the DS as the PC. [Sept 2007, p.84]
NGamer UK
Quite charming and colourful RTS, with a simple and accessible stylus-only control scheme and a fun multiplayer. Not really that much depth for hardened RTSites though. [Sept 2007, p.65]
IGN
Anno 1701 offers a rich, portable strategy experience. It rests comfortably on well-worn games and gameplay mechanics, but fans of the genre should find what they're looking for.

There are a couple of interface problems that mar this otherwise solid and entertaining DS title. [Aug 2007, p.117]

Dr. Cruel gave it a10:
A very high quality RTS simulation. Literally the state-of-the-art for Nintendo DS gaming in its genre. Very worthy of its international reputation.
Jonathan S. gave it a6:
Worked very well for a while, and then I realized that there's really very little room for doing things in different ways in this game. You've always got to do the same things in the same way and the same order: start by putting fishing ports and lumberjacks in, build houses and so on. Good the first few times but lost my interest much more quickly than even Age of Empires, which isn't trying to be a "god" game. Oh, and although the story mode works quite well, it starts as a tutorial regardless of whether you've played it before! Very very annoying.
shadowmuse gave it an8:
Excellent economic sim for a handheld device. The ability to save anywhere is perfect when on the go. Easy to handle though training troops and shipping them places can get alittle time consuming, and could have been more automated. Altogether however a very solid effort.
Random One gave it a10:
Awesome tactics.
Michael D. gave it a10:
For me this is the best game on the DS yet - I was waiing for Siedler DS actually and bought Anno to shorten the waiting time and it's simply worth every cent. Perfect handling - nice story - My game on the DS!
