Summary

Get back into the swing of things as Donkey Kong goes vertical. King K. Rool is up to no good again, and it’s up to Donkey Kong to swing into action. Using the same simple control scheme that made the DK: King of Swing Game Boy Advance SP game so accessible and fun to play, players of all skill levels can swing and climb to new heights made possible by the dual screens of Nintendo DS. Adventure mode features Diddy Kong as a sub-character, and players can look forward to new moves, new items and a bunch of minigames sure to make them go bananas. Not only that, but fun tutorials that ease new players into the game also can be accessed as minigame challenges. If players are more in the mood to rumble, they can take on up to three pals in fun multiplayer challenges using DS Download Play and the DS Local Area Network. They can pick from Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong or Funky Kong, and let the monkey business begin. [Nintendo]

Thunderbolt

This is a pick-up-and-play game in its purest form, albeit with a uniquely tropical control set-up that hasn’t been utilised anywhere else before, sans its neglected prequel.

If I was wearing a hat, I'd doff it to the DS development team at Nintendo, who for me can do no wrong... or rather I would, except that I need both hands to control DK, so maybe it's best that I'm not wearing one. This is though, another definite winner from the big N.

Gameplay that's as pure and refreshing as a glass of cold banana juice on a summer's day. [JPN Import; Nov 2007, p.60]

Official Nintendo Magazine UK

A fun little game that will keep you busy for a while. Just don't expect it to throw you any wild surprises, other than the main control system itself. [Christmas 2007, p.85]

Nintendo Power

The bottom line: Jungle Climber is much better than its predecessor, but it just might drive you bananas. [Nov 2007, p.104]

NZGamer

Once again, the Big N delivers with a unique gameplay experience, visuals that are, in the very least, fun, music and sound effects that hark back to a simpler time and any gamer's holy grail - a giant, luminous space banana. Happy climbing!

Modojo

In the end this Donkey Kong probably won't strike anybody as a instant classic, but it doesn't need to be in order to be very fun to play.

The control scheme is still as intuitive as it was first time round, but it is now encased in a fun and rewarding experience that is a pleasure to play from start to finish. [JPN Import]

As it is, it's a game that veers between excellence and anguish a little bit too often.

Hopefully DK’s second outing in his latest franchise will garner a bit more support this time around, because the big ape’s game definitely deserves it.

Slightly frustrating at times, but a good package overall.

The development team stuck to its guns with the original concept and fleshed it out with new levels, new elements, and more stuff to beef up the variety and to toughen things up.

The unique control scheme makes for an interesting change and a lot of fun, while the extra challenge modes provide incentive for much replay.

DK: Jungle Climber is arguably more of what we saw in King of Swing, but with updated graphics. For those who felt that game was already a one-trick pony, it may be an undesirable sequel, but tons of hard-to-reach collectibles, unlockable mini-games, and four-player downloadable battles will keep the rest of us honing our skills for hours.

The lackluster multiplayer mode and lame character designs don't take anything away from the main game, though. The swinging play mechanic helps keep things fresh and allows for a lot of technique that you don't normally see in a platformer.

Even with DK: Jungle Climber's faults, the game still delivers.

Some good flinging fun but perhaps it plays a little too safe. [Christmas 2007, p.84]

Game Revolution

Though this peg-swinging sequel to an average, what-it’s-name spin-off had just about everything against it, somehow nearly everything is executed with a full swing.

By splitting the difference between action and puzzle with its unconventional gameplay, Jungle Climber makes for a compelling experience.

It’s not the best platformer that the DS has to offer, clearly behind Mario games, but this different concept is worth trying.

Maxi Consolas (Portugal)

This is quite a contradictory game. The console has so many titles available that this one doesn’t really stand out, but it’s nevertheless a good Donkey Kong. Some of the levels are really creative, but others become quite frustrating because they require too much of the controls, which are innovative but not very precise. [Jan 2008]

Cheat Code Central

New players will likely get a kick out of the interesting control mechanics. Things may turn sour, however, once they get a taste of the game's occasionally grueling difficulty.

Though it gets slightly tiresome by the conclusion, Jungle Climber makes the most of its peg mechanic and provides a fresh change of pace from the familiar Mario side-scrolling school of thought.

GameDaily

We don't like the story, save for the talking banana aliens (fo fanana), and the whole peg grabbing stuff doesn't light our fire, but Jungle Climber is a cute, simplistic adventure game that anyone can get into, and the addition of four person multiplayer adds to its banana eating appeal.

Rather than deliver a tantalising treat, peeling away the skin of DK: Jungle Climber reveals bland play mechanics that can't be saved by the game's creative control system.

Richard H. gave it a9:
A refreshing, original platform that is not as simple as just tapping the L R keys. Alot of creative button pushing combinations, big, original worlds and cool mini games make this game a winner. Learning curve a tad high, so, be patient.
