Summary

(Also known as "Race Driver: GRID") GRID takes players to dramatic and beautifully realized race locations over three continents to compete in a variety of racing events. Packed with the most powerful race cars - new and classic, circuit and drift - players compete to conquer the most prestigious official race tracks and championships then beyond to compete in challenging city-based competitions, and then on through to road events and urban street races. The drama, the rivalries, the aggression and the crashes; this is not a game about collecting cars or spending all of your time in the front-end tuning suspension settings or designing liveries. Codemasters wants to make racing exciting again. Gamers compete on Europe's greatest official race tracks in prestige Marques including Aston Martin, Koenigsegg and Pagani. Iconic cities across the U.S, including San Francisco, Washington DC and Detroit - each with their own atmosphere and events - play host to diverse street races, where high-performance V8 muscle cars set the pace in aggressive, closely fought pack competitions. And in the Far East, Japanese racing culture sets the tone where night races, including Drift racing, takes drivers through neon illuminated cities and to outlying mountain roads. There's also the opportunity to compete in races that operate on the fringes of legality in the back streets and industrial areas of Yokohama. [Codemasters]

Pocket Gamer UK

A game that pushes the DS to its limits and though it's a simulation in nature, GRID always puts fun ahead of cold accuracy.

Official Nintendo Magazine UK

If you're after a good racing simulation on the DS then GRID is one of the best out there. [July 2008, p.97]

Cheat Code Central

a great handheld racing game. Compared to Race Driver, it's more like an expansion pack. It's very similar, although more refined. But if you haven't played the original, this is the one to get.

If you’re a racing fan already enjoying GRID on your console but has a DS that’s craving for some love, this version is definitely worth picking up.

Nintendo Power

Whether you're competing against CPU cars or your friends, though, GRID is one of the most challenging and entertaining racing games for DS yet. [July 2008, p.88]

GameSpot

Grid offers a great balance of arcade and simulation racing with enough extras to keep you entertained for hours.

IGN

An impressive effort that has a lot going for it, and it’s a slight improvement over last year’s already impressive Race Driver: Create and Race experience. GRID is best played on the console, but the DS game offers up its own unique take on the core racing design.

N-Europe

With great graphics and stellar gameplay, GRID offers DS owners a fantastic console experience on the go. It’s more of the same, but with more vehicles, tracks and customisation options GRID will keep all who play it race-happy.

NGamer UK

There was nothing wrong with it last time, and this is the same except with a more polished track editor. Top stuff for real driving fans. [July 2008, p.69]

Fun racing and the brilliant track creation tool is almost a game in itself. [Issue#23, p.78]

Modojo

GRID is difficult at first, and the lack of a speedy frame rate may throw you off. Otherwise, there's nothing to hold you back from shifting into high gear. Buy it, hit the gas and race for the finish line.

Eurogamer

It's certainly true that apart from the graphical polish, this is essentially the same in terms of core gameplay, albeit structured slightly differently. But with new courses, new cars and the freedom to create your own content, it's hard to imagine too many DS-owning race fans being put off by such a piffling complaint though.

Racing games on the DS have so far definitely not been the best of breed, which is exactly why we're so surprised over just how fun Race Driver: GRD for the DS is. Sure, graphics-wise is won't blow your mind but the presentation definitely does it's job well and driving is just pure fun. If you've been longing for the chance to burn rubber in a gratifying way on the DS, this is it.

This Nintendo DS version isn't anywhere near the quality (or originality) of the console versions, but if you can accept it as a good racing game and not another version of GRID, you'll enjoy it very much.

Maxi Consolas (Portugal)

Being a kind of update for Race Driver: Create & Race, Race Driver: Grid it’s not the best investment for those who already own the first one. But if you don’t have it, and if you are looking for a “serious” racing game for the DS, this is the one to get. [Sept 2008]

The DS version of GRID seems to be more than a simple cash-in. It's unfortunate that the game suffers from technical difficulties. There’s a lack of speed, no damage physics and the camera viewpoints could cause the player some problems. On the good side, you can design your own circuits, you can race online and there’s a solid career mode. The sheer fun, catapults this game above average.

GRID is absolutely your best bet if you’ve got a craving for racing on your DS (sans turtle shells and banana peels), and it’ll keep you busy for quite some time.

Call me a purist, but I like my traditional racers on consoles -- not my DS -- where I can sit on my couch, marvel at the crisp graphics, and feel the feedback coming into my racing wheel as I drive along the road. But if you really want to race on the DS -- and it's your only viable option -- GRID works as intended...mostly.

anb gave it a3:
Its horrible. Literally. I won't give a bad game good credit just because "it pushing console to limits" or whatever. The car behavior is so dumb i cant even imagine, seriously, Road Rash on Genesis was 100 times more "natural" than this crap.
