Summary
The no holds barred, sci-fi fighting franchise is reborn on the Nintendo DS. Guilty Gear Dust Strikers features all 21 Guilty Gear characters from previous versions (including SolBadbuy, Potemkin, May, Dizzy and others) in a battle that takes place on multiple levels across both DS screens. Navigate different types of floors and traps as you battle against the computer or via wireless multi-player connections. 6 modes of play including Arcade, Story, VS Battle and mini games. Customize the Robo-Ky character with various move sets in the Robo-Ky factory mode. Battle your friends in 4-player wireless versus matches where the last person standing moves on. Master 10 mini-games like Billiards, Arm-Wrestling and Sword Practice that unlock more Robo-Ky moves. Beware of poison, fire, thunder and bomb traps set to damage unaware opponents. Special moves like Psych Burst, Dust Attack and Roman Cancel all return in Guilty Gear Dust Strikers. [Majesco]

Play Magazine
When not playing single-player or against friends, spend some time with one of seven mini-games; okay, so they're not all that fun, but playing it will unlock pieces for building your own custom Robo Ky, which is. [May 2006, p.61]
NintendoWorldReport
The biggest drawback to the game is a lack of single-cartridge multiplayer.

DS owners are advised to take care if they are contemplating purchasing this odd take of the Guilty Gear franchise, as besides the series' moniker, this is definitely not the same game that you are used to playing.

Despite the changes made to simplify Dust Strikers' core fighting engine, the combo system is surprisingly comprehensive.

It's just too mentally tricky, with all the up and down between screens, for genuinely enjoyable gameplay, but it's a must-have for any serious fans of the series. [Oct 2006, p.67]
Nintendo Power
What happens when you take the hard-core, precision-based fighting of Guilty Gear and mix it with the multitiered four-player craziness of "Super Smash Bros."? You get Guilty Gear Dust Strikers for the DS. [Jun 2006, p.85]
Game Chronicles
An extremely cool game that is full of some really amazing innovations, but ultimately ends up a victim of its own creativity.

I enjoyed it more than i thought, although it's not that deep, it's still really fun as a pick-up-and-play fighting game. Plus the RK Factory is lots of fun to play around with.

Sadly, Strikers’ almost schizophrenic nature prevents it from greatness. Had the developers chosen to keep the game in the style of previous Gear titles, they would have done just fine.

Fans will be happy with its fairly large roster of classic Guilty Gear characters, but gamers savvy with Jump Superstars and Bleach DS may not be impressed.

The inclusion of the power-ups severely cheapens the game, changing it from a competitive fighting game into a wannabe party title.

Of course, there are a number of much better multiplayer titles on the DS, but it's something. [May 2006, p.110]
GamePro
It's too bad that Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers had to sacrifice some of its progenitors strongest features to enact new and engaging gameplay changes because the new enhancements for Dust Strikers really do add something new to the franchise, however; judging the entire game as a whole leaves it wanting.
The gameplay is sloppy and basic, the characters suffer from less of an animation budget on the smaller system, and the overall feel just isn’t worthy of the Guilty Gear name.
Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers is not the essential handheld fighting experience, and doesn't really deserve to be. Its control quirks and lack of anything in terms of long-term entertainment outside of the multiplayer fail to make this a must-buy.

Just a hodgepodge of a game that is marred by its overly ambitious efforts to be something unique.
While I can understand the developers change up the formula to adjust to a new platform with its own unique features, the execution of this is something less the desired.

Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers is something that should've been a no-brainer. Sadly, with the addition of party elements and lack of unlockables, the game just doesn't live up to its predecessors.
With tasty graphics and a finely-tuned battle engine, Dust Strikers is another quality entry into the Guilty Gear series that while not offering anything new (or better) than other DS fighting games, is still an enjoyable game.
Dust Strikers defies convention for the worse, resulting in an awkward and frustrating fighting game.
The traditional Guilty Gear gameplay just doesn’t translate that well to the arena style of play: most of the moves would be better suited to a straight one-on-one fight. [Nov 2007, p.120]
Digital Entertainment News
Dust Strikers could’ve been a fun game, but the lack of depth and limited replay value keep it from being a must-own.
Read Full Review >Official Nintendo Magazine UK
While we can appreciate what Dust Strikers is trying to do, it just doesn't work. [Nov 2007, p.85]
Pocket Gamer UK
Lack of challenge, cluttered screens, dumbed-down controls and repetitive gameplay make Guilty Gear Dust Strikers a brawler to avoid.

But while Arc has obviously attempted a Super Smash Bros-style game within the Guilty Gear universe, the end result is something truly horrendous.

Viva le Ky gave it a2:
As an avid Guilty Gear fan, this game was the single most disappointing thing I have ever played. Even ignoring the fact that it clearly can't play like a regular GG game due to the 4-player and multi-tiered stages, it doesn't even play well as a party brawler. Heck, Guilty Gear Advance was a much more faithful adaptation of the series than this. If you want to play GG, buy a main game from the series (e.g. not DS or Isuka). If you want a fun party brawler, buy Jump Ultimate Stars.
Clay W. gave it an8:
As far as fighters go, this one is actually pretty decent and fresh. Sure, the controls are odd, and the story mode is whack, but the combo system is solid, and the soundtrack is good, though lacking some of the classic Guilty Gear songs (No Mercy is regretfully absent here, but I did hear Lady Fascination in there), but four player fights are FUN, even if three of the fighters are the CPU more often than not. Did I mention that there's a customizable fighter in here too? Sadly, he doesn't have very many moves...ah, well, Guilty Gear fans will not be disappointed.
