Summary
The Story So Far: When a strange girl hands Ernesto, the young prince of Valencia, a mysterious sword and tells him to save his friends, he thinks nothing of using the magical blade to fight off an undead attack. Little does he know that such a small choice will spark a war that will rage across the continent of Yulamecca and beyond. Command your forces into one of several formations, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Harness The Power of The Einherjar! Collect all the Vaettir Arms (180+ Arms to find!) scattered throughout the game and strike fear into the hearts of your foes with the awesome power of the Valhalla Break! Ad-Hoc Goodness! Using the power of ad-hoc wireless connectivity you can trade items with your friends, rent out your heroes to aid friends in need, or battle them for fame and glory. Create An Unstoppable Army. Equip different weapons to change the class, abilities, and appearance of your soldiers! Choose wisely to unlock the legendary secret class. [Aksys Games]

Laevatein Tactics has everything tactical fans expect from the genre, and not much else. I won’t be so harsh as to call the game “forgettable”, but there are far more unique and interesting genre offerings already available for the DS. Other than an unwieldy name, Laevatein Tactics hasn’t got much to distinguish itself from the pack.

If you’re not already familiar with tactics games then the beginning will seem unnecessarily difficult.

Hero’s Saga Laevatein Tactics is about as straightforward as it gets on DS. It’s a game that doesn’t push visuals too hard, sounds decent, and follows other tactics formulas from multiple games with only a touch of innovation.

Genre fans should still give this Saga a look - it has some very well-designed stages, and a fine English script by Aksys - but be warned that your best-laid strategies might go south at the worst possible moment. [Nov 2009, p.84]
Hardcore Gamer Magazine
While it’s a little rough around the edges and the characters and plot aren’t too intriguing, Hero’s Saga is a well-made SRPG.

Hero's Saga has some good points such as actual, strategic challenge and some pretty visuals, but the game as a whole is weak.

Despite these flaws, the game as a pure tactical scenario actually manages to rise above more prominent choices on the DS such as the Luminous Arc series, delivering a unique and enjoyable tactical experience that should engross devotees of the genre.

HSLT should definitely not be high on your list of DS SRPGs to play, but not necessarily at the bottom either.

I didn't find myself particularly enthralled with Laevatein -- the dull as dirt presentation did little to augment a game system I often found flawed.
Read Full Review >Games Radar (in-house)
With so many other notable SRPGs already out for portable consoles, Hero's Saga: Laevatein Tactics fails to emulate the magic of its forebears such as Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre, and also fails to define itself among contemporaries like Rondo of Swords and Jeanne D'Arc. We still love classic SRPGs; it's just that at this point, Hero's Saga feels like a step back.
