Summary

Follow the fantastic adventures of two very cool pop-stars in HiHi Puffy AmiYumi: The Genie & the Amp. A massive writer's block is thwarting the girls' attempts to finish their new album. Frustrated, Ami and Yumi kick a dusty amplifier, releasing a genie! Using the genie as a guide and helper, Ami and Yumi collect musical notes from 10 time periods. Playing as Ami or Yumi, you solve challenging puzzles, battle scary enemies and unlock minigames in single-player or two-player wireless co-op mode. [Nintendo]

Play Magazine

A tad repetitious but always extra caffienated. [Aug 2006, p.65]

AceGamez

Sure, this is a button-bashing fist-fest with a gimmick that you may or may not appreciate, but if you're a fan of the show, then Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi: The Genie & the Amp is worth picking up.

Worth Playing

Don't come into Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi: The Genie and the Amp expecting too much, and you'll be satisfied with what you get – a fun, short brawling romp that is reasonably well-suited to portable play.

Genie & the Amp makes good use of the DS touch screen, but it’s still something that could have been done via the buttons instead of the touch screen. The graphics do a good job of bringing the show’s ambience to the small screen and the music is right on the money.

G4 TV

There's good work here, on the graphics, the soundtrack, the interface, and even the combat system, for all that it doesn't work out in the long run.

Digital Entertainment News

A brawler with good ideas looking for a slightly forgiving player to see the potential in there.

Game Informer

Random button pressing will get you farther than most attempts at strategy, and getting locked into long combo animations is a "feature" that makes me just want to die. [Sept. 2006, p.100]

Nintendo Power

Unfortunately, not even cupid's arrow can reconcile my disdain for the DS side-scrolling brawler that bears the name of the object of my affection. [Aug 2006, p.87]

IGN

The game sounds good, looks okay, but plays terribly. Unless you're an absolute maniac for all things Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi, you should just say "bye bye" to this rendition.

Modojo

There are a few collectibles to unlock in the game, as well as a couple of mini-games that are worth a look, but, sadly, that means having to endure the main game and its unforgivable flaws. Ami and Yumi deserve better than this licensed garbage.

Dr. Cruel gave it a9:
Fairly interesting, fun game. My young cousin bought it for $20 and for that price it's worth it - you make music with four strings, which translate into fight moves. It's cute, and very Japanese. Granted it's not an in-depth strategy title, and won't compare with Advance Wars or the like. But if you're an 8 year old girl (like my cousin is) you'll be challenged by and really enjoy it.

Goyo G. gave it a9:
I think the 2d/3d style is unique & looks awesome! It looks great (like the show but in cell-shaded 3d) and it plays great. The world needed a "rock & roll brawler" and now it has one. This team should make INVADER ZIM using the same artists!
