Summary
The quiet town of South Arc is about to have some monster trouble. Foul creatures with serious attitude problems have infested nearby forests and are now slowly moving into the village. The townsfolk, fearful for their safety, do not even dare to leave their homes. Calls for help have gone unanswered, likely because every other town in the Kingdom is similarly troubled. As a young lad off in search of your calling, you stumble across a talking shovel. The verbose tool forcibly binds you to the task of digging a dungeon on the outskirts of South Arc, hoping to bait and trap the scrounging monsters. Looks like you found your calling, Master of the Monster Lair. Now start digging! [Atlus USA]

An acquired taste. You may love quirky games and feel nothing for Master of the Monster Lair, or hate quirky games and be consumed by this one for hours. Harvest Moon fans take note – while very different from that series, Master of the Monster Lair has similar demanding and addictive qualities.

If you're an Atlus devotee, a Nintendo DS gamer looking for a novel twist on the role-playing game genre or someone simply desiring a portable game to absorb hours of your life, you could do much worse than Master of the Monster Lair.

Master of the Monster Lair makes for a moderately enjoyable blend of old school RPG mechanics and Harvest Moon-type gameplay. Depending on personality, players will either grow tired of the unchanging formula after a few hours of gameplay, or identify with the sometimes tedious tasks and become addicted.

This laissez-faire approach to difficulty, coupled with a bizarre cooking-based level-up system that lets you whip up permanent stat bonuses to your heart's content, makes for a lightweight, oddly endearing adventure that's recommended for younger players.

Each of the individual parts work in theory, and mesh incredibly well - it's obvious that Global A put significant thought into how dungeon play should complement what's done in town.

It'll take a lot of patience to master this monster lair. [Dec 2008, p.104]
Game Informer
The gameplay just doesn’t have enough meat on its bones to back up the concept.

Part RPG and part Dungeon Tycoon, it has its charms but the slow pace and repetitive nature will be a turnoff to many.

Don't get me wrong, Master of Monster Lair is a decent game that's worth picking up, but it's nowhere near as entertaining a week down the road as it is during the first few hours.

Unfortunately, these ideas are bogged down by overly simplistic gameplay mechanics and a reliance on excessive repetition and grinding that will likely become unbearably tedious for many players long before the game is officially over.

Master of the Monster Lair is a decent DS RPG. The problem is that the RPG genre is getting really crowded, and seeing as how it is currently dominated by a SNES era game that everyone has been waiting for it's going to be tough for a game like Master of the Monster Lair to succeed

The very definition of the play in Master of the Monster Lair hinges on repeating the same actions to meet arbitrarily-set goals, so only the most boredom-resistant players need apply—fans of farming sim Harvest Moon looking for a different type of crop to harvest might want to check it out, but players wanting something a little less grind-happy in terms of design should look elsewhere.
