Publisher: Buena Vista Games

Developer: Q Entertainment

Genre(s): Puzzle

Players: 4

ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)

Release Date: February 27, 2007

Summary

Meteos: Disney Magic combines the superb puzzle gameplay of the original version with beloved Disney brands. Featuring an original story within the classic Disney universe, players are asked to help Jiminy Cricket and Tinker Bell in their quest to re-organize the famous Disney storybook vault after someone accidentally changed the stories. By piecing together three or more Disney-themed blocks with the DS stylus and launching them from the touch screen, players are challenged to create puzzle patterns while interacting with some of their favorite Disney characters, including those from Pirates of the Caribbean, Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, Cinderella, Lilo & Stitch, The Lion King and more. If you’re a puzzle gaming fan, you’ll probably enjoy the strategy, and if you’re younger, you might enjoy progressing further in order to view more Disney-themed levels. The only thing I feel the game truly lacks is Wi-Fi play.

The new additions to the Meteos franchise only serve to make the title more interesting and as fun as ever, so what you're really getting is an improved version of an already great game, but one that has a little Disney magic sprinkled in - and for once, it's a great use of the Disney name.

Even if you don't like the Disney themes that are in the game, Disney Magic really is about decent single and multiplayer gameplay, and less about Winnie The Pooh or Beauty & The Best. If you loved the original, you'll love Disney Magic.

Despite the lack of authentic Disney music and the lack of any sort of online play, Meteos: Disney Magic is a worthy pickup for anyone that is looking for a new puzzler, both Disney fan and non-fan alike.

Gamers' Temple

In spite of the “cutesy” appearance of a Disney game that’s too hard to play for the wee set, Disney Magic is a lot of fun to play. If you enjoyed Meteos, then you’ll like this variant on the game.

Meteos: Disney Magic does a really good job moving the design forward. Now let's bring back the alien worlds and take this sucker online.

It's essential for all fans of the original and those of you who missed Metoes the first time again should not make the same mistake again!

Essentially a marketable way to attract new players to the Meteos concept, and it works. The only real problem here is a minor one -- for some reason, the game continues to progress when in Sleep Mode, resulting in a Game Over as soon as the DS is unfolded.

One criticism is perhaps that some of the Disney icons are difficult to distinguish. Another is that the unlockables aren't marshalled into such a sophisticated structure as in the original. But apart from those minor gripes, Disney Magic is every bit as good as the original.

The minds behind this game took what was arguably the best puzzle game on the DS, modified it to fit with a Disney theme, and managed to not screw it up.

Purists will probably be outraged at the change to the gameplay mechanics. [Aug 2007, p.92]

The Disney theme won't be everyone's cup of tea, but the core Meteos experience is still a ton of scribbling fun.

Playing sideways is definitely a great improvement and the ability to swap blocks sideways is an interesting touch, but I'm not sure that's enough to merit a purchase for veteran players.

The only thing lacking is online play. Regardless Meteos: Disney Magic is a great update to the original Meteos.

Jolt Online Gaming UK

The irony is, despite Meteos: Disney Magic being an inferior update, it’ll probably sell more purely due to the fact that the Disney licence is there. The fact that said licence has been wasted is hugely disappointing, as is the mishandling of some of the updates to the thankfully still-good gameplay.

Be wary when purchasing Meteos: Disney Magic. It isn’t a full out sequel by any means. I recommend this version of Meteos first – especially since the original is leagues above it in difficulty.

The new game has its fair share of changes to the formula, but they don't really make the game better, just slightly different. Unless the Disney art is a huge selling point for you, there's little reason to choose Disney Magic over the original, wonderful, plain-old Meteos.

With wi-fi multiplayer to back-up the generally intense single-player modes, it’s still a good purchase for action puzzle fans. Or more specifically, the kids of those action puzzle fans.

Nintendo Power

Meteos: Disney Magic does more than provide a Mouseketeer-friendly facelift to one of the DS's best puzzle games; thanks to the ability to move blocks horizontally, the sequel has a thoroughly different dynamic than the original block launcher. [Apr 2007, p.85]

PALGN

The additions added to Disney Magic more than make it a fun and engaging title however, it may seem a little too familiar for returning players and only nine franchises have been taken advantage of plus there are no remixes of classic Disney tunes.

The differences between the original "Meteos" and Disney Magic are largely cosmetic, thanks mostly to cameos by Cinderella, the Lion King and other cartoon heroes. But even if Disney leaves you cold, "Meteos" is an essential game for any DS library.

The primary stumbling block that I can see is that fans of Meteos will feel a little underwhelmed, while Disney fans might be left wanting more challenge too quickly for the game's good.

Most likely, the developers adding in all these gameplay elements to make it easier on the player, something that the target audience -- younger kids, would appreciate. But to the fans of the first title, it is like a slap in the face.

Unshackled from the limitations of ‘vertical-only’ movement, this update is more intuitive than its predecessor and turning the DS ninety degrees is a wonderful touch too.

Worth Playing

Sadly, I can't even recommend this as a sequel to the original game, as the changed features are going to be upsetting to anyone who was a die-hard Meteos fan. However, as a children's game, Meteos: Disney Magic succeeds admirably.

Meteos: Disney Magic sports nearly identical gameplay as its predecessor, but the music is so uninspired and bland that even the notable improvements to the bread and butter block-clearing can’t make up for it.

Even with the cute and loveable Disney themes incorporated into Meteos there is no slack given on the challenge of the game, or the gameplay. If anything Meteos: Disney Magic is an improvement on the original game.

Games Radar (in-house)

Meteos: Disney Magic will only sell because of the Disney name. Yes, it’s still Meteos, but the experience is shallow because of the diluted gameplay. Instead of being simplified, the difficulty is spiked and like most crack that's peddled, the Disney high wears off quickly.

Difficulty spikes are the last straw, leaving this as a good idea gone distinctly mediocre. [June 2007, p.70]
