At around 1,000 different puzzle of varying difficulty, a plethora of options, ease of use, and single-card download play, there's little if anything that New York Times Crosswords got wrong.

There is probably room for more features, but as a simple record of crossword history, the game works well. For crossword junkies it's a no brainer.

So, is it worth having an essentially infinite supply of crossword puzzles the size of a postage stamp to carry around with you for $30? If you have any sort of interest in crosswords, yes. Undoubtedly. It's one of the best uses yet of the DS, and it makes for a perfect portable game.

The New York Times Crosswords for the NDS is made for the puzzle freak and crossword enthusiast, but it's also enjoyable for anyone who has a penchant for simple-playing games with a good deal of challenge.

Judging the game on its own merits, this is just what a handheld crossword game should be.

Superb handwriting recognition and other nifty features make a strong argument for ditching traditional paper crosswords in favor of ones on handhelds like the Nintendo DS.

If you don’t mind the fact that the game costs more than a book of crossword puzzles that you can pick up at a newsstand, you’ll find yourself enjoying this electronic version of the New York Times’ signature puzzle.

Exactly what it sets out to be: an archive of a thousand crossword puzzles from the New York Times, reproduced on the Nintendo DS in compact form.

A great game that should appeal to those zealots and casual players that eat this stuff up. The features and game modes offer a lot of options, the presentation is excellent and the text-recognition actually works and works fast.

A great introduction to crosswords on a handheld system. The engine is a great asset to a handheld that has provided new ways to play many pen and paper puzzles. For crossword junkies, this is a must-have.

Though it would have to drop the New York Times license, it would be great to see a second crossword game with a broad range of categories, such as music, movies and gaming, instead of random, non-themed puzzles. It just seems more fitting, considering that most NYT fans will have either finished these puzzles at some point or prefer to play them in the traditional form.

Tim C. gave it a9:
Very fun. If you're a crossword fan and a DS owner, this is a must own. But beware - the challenge hasn't been dumbed down for a younger audience at all. This is the real NY Times, rated on a Monday through Sunday difficulty scale. So be prepared for some hard puzzles. I only have a couple minor qualms. When the game was announced, I was hoping for a more minimalist / Brain Age-y look and feel to the game. Maybe something that echoed the look of the NY Times newspaper. Instead, it's more playful and colorful, which is ok, but not all that nice to look at. Wi-Fi connections to download new puzzles would have been a killer addition. And a simpler game like this really belongs at the $20 price point.
Noah gave it an8:
The only thing missing that would make this perfect would be to use the Wi-Fi in the DS to browse and download crossword files *from* the Times' website, if you had paid for a online crossword subscription.
Puzzler Player gave it a10:
Insanely fun. My wife and I play against each other via download play all the time. Highly recommended to crossword lovers everywhere.
Ken S. gave it a10:
1000+ crosswords for $30! Plus the user interface is fun and easy to use.
